I beat Sonic 1 on Game Gear and really enjoyed it. How is Sonic 2 compared to it? I already have Sonic Chaos and Sonic Triple Trouble so just exclude those from the discussion.

I enjoyed it. I can't compare the two on Game Gear because I didn't get too far in them to form a solid opinion. However, it is diffent from the one on Genesis so I'd go ahead and get it if your itching for a new sonic game.

its good but not as good as the other GG Sonic games and controls are kinda loose, still worth picking up though

It's the weakest of the Game Gear Sonics, but still worthy of a purchase.
The best one is Sonic Chaos in my opinion, then Sonic Blast, then Sonic 1 then Sonic Triple Trouble, then Sonic 2.

From my experience, the best GG Sonic is the original (developed by Yuzo Koshiro's Ancient). Sonic 2, which is probably one of the most, if not THE most common GG game out there is okay........if you're playing on the Master System. The cramped resolution of the GG, coupled with the annoyingly difficuly, no-ring boss battles kills it for me. Sonic 1 also suffered from the GG's cramped res,but not as much.
Chaos & Triple Trouble were just too ambitious for the GG hardware, and feel as if they're moving in molasses. Good ideas, but sluggish, gameplay.
Sonic Blast was visually impressive but mediocre.
I wouldn't recommend GG Sonic 2. I have Sonic 1, Sonic 2, and Sonic Chaos. Sonic 2 is by far my least favorite; the other two are very good / great. (Sonic 1 is the best.)

I never knew Sonic 2 was this hated on the internet. It's always been my favorite Game Gear Sonic game out of the four that I've played (2, Chaos, Triple Trouble, and Blast). The added challenge was always a plus and only a few stages got into that frustrating territory for me. Also it wasn't as bland as Chaos. I hated Blast.

Well from what I gather here, GG Sonic 2 is the worst out of the 4 main platformers but given how cheap it is, it's worth picking up. Thanks for the help guys, I think I'll snag it. :)

Yeah, personally I like Sonic 2, it's a bit overbashed IMO. The only thing is that the boss battles are very poorly designed.
Sonic Triple Trouble does run very sluggishly, I think Sonic Chaos is the best game of the bunch. Sonic 1 is pretty good too, but suffers from some slowdown.

For no more than a copy typically costs you can easily try it out yourself without laying out much cash.

Sonic Chaos is okay but it is definitely slower than Sonic 1. I'd say Sonic 1 is the fastest out of them all (sans Sonic 2, I've barely ever played it. I don't remember much from my play of it on Sonic Gems Collection).

We're talking one digit numbers here, I don't think emulation is required.

Sonic Chaos is also the easiest Sonic game ever made you could beat it w/ your eyes closed w/ no problem, still a good game, but a bit too easy w/ no challenge to it.

You sure about that? The one boss in the second (or third) zone is pretty damn hard. Sonic moves too slow to dodge the shots properly. I ended up jumping on top of Robotnik's contraption and staying there until he blew up.

yes I'm 100% sure

I'd recommend the Master System versions of all three games (Sonic, Sonic 2, Chaos).
I'm with Christuserloeser, if possible get SMS games instead of GG games.

Not all of us live in Europe/UK though. Sonic 1 is really rare and expensive over here and I do not like to import. Only if I have to.
Besides, I beat Sonic 1 just fine with the lower resolution, I'd hate playing the SMS games on GG with the huge resolution when I could play them adjusted for the small display. The Genesis Sonics are for playing at home.

The SMS Sonic games look great. You can often buy an EU Sonic game and even with shipping it won't cost much overall. All SMS games are region free so importing isn't much of a challenge. I picked up Sonic 1 for SMS complete in the box for under $15 US even including shipping. A complete boxed version of the game for GG can often cost that much or more with local shipping.

I already have Sonic 1, Chaos and Triple Trouble though. The only one I'm missing is Sonic 2. I mentioned this in the first post.
Also, how can the SMS Sonics look good? The Game Gear has more colors! :p
The SMS' higher screen resolution makes the first boss in Sonic 2 a buttload easier.

You mentioned above that Sonic 1 SMS in the US is expensive, just keeping up with your current comments. Sonic 2 for SMS isn't hard to find nor expensive. Regardless, Sonic 2 for GG is easy to find and dirt cheap so just buy and try it.

Yeah, go for importing the SMS versions, especially if you can get them bundled. (to save on shipping) Perhaps the bazar would be helpful for this as well. (rather than hoping to find a bundled set on ebay, or a seller with all those games in separate aucitiosn willing to combine shipping)
I definitely want to get those one I get an SMS. (though I think my uncle actually has Sonic 1 with his SMS II, I'll find out whenever he find it, and a loose 32x, and soem random genesis or 32x games -it's been ~7 years since I last saw it, so I'm not sure)
Are any of those PAL games 50 Hz corrected, or do they all play slow? (judging by the ROMs I've seen, they all seem to play slow, but I haven't checked a couple later games, like Chaos)
Of course, anyone who initially played the PAL versions in 50 Hz, will probably see it in the oposite perspective, with them playing "too fast" in 60 Hz. :p

Go for it, if you liked the first one, you'll probably like this one as well. I found it frustratingly difficult, but otherwise it's a solid 8bit Sonic game.

The SMS games play slow @50hz, from what I can gather.
And if you find Sonic Blast for SMS, my advice is: Stick it in a cupboard, NEVER PLAY IT. Too easy, dodgey looking graphics... errgh.

Why? As I understand it, you're both more likely to get it cheaper, and an actual decent game that works and isn't torn to pieces. Btw, how do you not already have Sonic 2 GG? ;p

Oh, be nice :) I only got Sonic Blast recently, it's not bad. Not exactly in keeping with the greatness of the other 8-bit Sonics (excluding 2, Spinball, and to some extent Chaos, imo they're all a bit pleh) and it's a bit ugly, but it's still fun. Need to finish playing though it :)

When I got my big carry case full of Game Gear stuff, it had Sonic 1 with no manual, but Sonic 2's manual. I assume the previous owner somehow lost his/her copy of Sonic 2 but kept the manual.
SMS Sonic games are a bit slower in 50Hz but much smoother... there's fair share of choppiness in the SMS Sonic games....
and Sonic Blast is kick@$$, I will want to get that one

I prefer the Game Gear versions to SMS versions myself.
And I also think Sonic Blast is a great game.
