...for the PC version. I recall that after they were denied the NiGHTS license, their next idea was to develop it for PC and then port from PC to Saturn.

Ugh, that looks like it would be confusing as hell to play. It would also have looked much worse on the Saturn.

I guess poor Xtreme just never had a chance... :(

Looks like they decided speed didn't need to be included in this Sonic game. What's with the super-wide camera lens?

The psuedo "fish-eye" lense as they called it was supposed to make the game look more 3D or something, at least that's what members of the development team had said. I'm not exactly sure how or why.

This and other strange and complicated "innovations" eventually caused them to give up though. Still, I wonder what the finished product would've been like. The movie makes it seem like it would have been awkward to control, but who knows? It couldn't have been any worse than 3D Blast anyway.

A lot of games use it nowadays. In fact, Ghost Recon 2 uses it on the XBOX360.

I think this would have been fun to play. It's a bit slow for a Sonic game from what you see in this video, but from everything I've ever read/heard/seen about Sonic Xtreme, it looked like a fun title that wouldn't have been too bad at all.

Better than Sonic 3D Blast (Saturn Version), like Obviously pointed out.

Issue #23 of Retro Gamer has a nice two-page spread on Xtreme. They talk about the fish-eye lens and everything.

Now wait just a cotton-pickin' minute here. 3D Blast is a great game, even better if you can dig out the ol' 3D pad. It's very playable, I love to fart around in the Green Grove Zone for five minutes before I go out or something. I never did manage to get all the Emeralds without cheating :(

Why do I love everything others hate? \-_-/

Although I was highly disappointed in 3D Blast when I first played it, I found myself coming back to it quite a bit. Something about it is just enticing; I've replayed it a lot. I think part of it's the soundtrack. Oh how I love Richard Jacques.
