View Full Version : The Misadventures of Flink

I got this game recently in my quest to collect all Sega-CD games, and so far I like it. It's got great animation and seems to keep me entertained...but why in the world did the developers not include a save option! Or even a password feature?!? The game touts on the back of the box over 50 levels, six islands to explore, you can even create your own spells from items you collect in your inventory, AND the game has a world-map system similar to Popful Mail that you can go back to replay any level...but all this in a single sitting?
Maybe I just haven't played far enough into the game to save (I doubt it), but it seems that this would be quite a lot to play through without being able to save your progress!

I have that game but don't play it too much because the controls and play feel so very Euro. That's a bad thing.
Nope, no save or password. That's why my copy has been sitting on my shelf for years, sadly awaiting some serious playtime.

I'm pretty sure thee's a stage select or something like that. Check for codes on GameFAQs or some other site where people who like to cheat and be dishonest gather.

I had never heard of this game before, but seeing pictures of it makes me wanna try it out. Btw, they should have invented a piggy-back RAM cart where you could save anytime in any game. :P

I just got this game earlier in the week, and played for a while this morning. It's absolutely awesome, and I couldn't remember seeing a review for it on Sega-16. After checking, I now realize it's because there is no review for it! This is a crying shame...the game is very high on my list of 16-bit Sega platformers after my playthrough this morning. The environment and presentation are just top-notch. I loved the section in the fourth or fifth level where you had to use the falling leaves as ledges, and the section where the big sea monsters jumped out of the background into the foreground like Space Harrier. I agree with the sentiments about the save, though...this seems like a game on the same scale as Super Mario World, what with all the secrets I've already seen (and I'm not that far in!), so being able to record progress seems like a no-brainer. Ah well...I'll just have to go find that Stage Select code or whatever. Regardless, I'm really glad I picked it up. The controls do take a little getting used to, but for me it's mainly the lack of a run button. It doesn't feel nearly as European to me as Puggsy did.

Flink is a pretty amazing game. And the lack of a save or password feature isn't nearly in bad as it could be. I meant, some games really have problems with that kind of thing to an extent Flink doesn't. Cadash, for example.

Hmmmm, I never played this, but I looked at a scan of the back of the case on Moby Games and saw some screen shots. Looks like an interesting platformer.

I have this for Mega Drive and played it a couple of times. I really like the graphics and color palette but need to give it another chance some time, haven't gotten that far.

I found the code on GFAQs for the game, but I couldn't get the darn thing to work. I read and re-read it, but maybe I'm just not inputting it at the correct point? Anyone got any insight?

Flink is amazing visually and doesn't get enough recognition. There's a psuedo sequel on PSX that's even less well known.

So, I finally figured out the deal with the code. GFAQs just says to do it at the main menu, which made me think it meant before starting a new game. Nope, it means you do the code during gameplay, and as a consequence of doing the code, it opens the main menu for doing the spells and stuff.
Finally got it to work, and on the CD version at least, the code does not enable a level select. It has some information on your hardware/software version, and the option to "reset" the level you're on (start over, basically), but that's all the Cheat menu does on my US Sega CD version of the game. Maybe it works on the cart version for more stuff? I don't know, since I don't have that version. :-/

I'm pretty sure that 98% of the people who submit codes to GameFAQs are retarded. Seriously, just look at the majority people who post on the internet. Do you think they care about things like accuracy and detail? Of course not! They just care about getting their lame screen name on GameFAQs so they can say they contributed. I hate retarded people. They're almost as bad as the homeless.

At least the code worked. You know what led me to figuring out the problem? I was mucking around on GenesisCollective, and they had an entry for the cartridge version of Flink that was more specific.
I really do wonder why they'd intentionally reduce the cheats for the American Sega CD release, though. Seems like more effort than its worth.

Do you have the Sega CD version or the cart version? What region?
I'm just interested in having someone else test the code to see if it works on the cart version (gives the level select).
Regardless, it's a great platformer...seems to be a bit underexposed in the community to me.

Are you sure there's a cart version?

Are you sure there's a cart version?
It may be a European exclusive release, but I know there's at least one cart version:
http://www.genesiscollective.com/ShowPage.php?GameLink=952
I think the only US version may be the Sega CD version. I know that the cheat code listed on the Genesis Collective link above works on my US Sega CD release, but it doesn't include all the cheats that I've read it should have. This makes me think the original list of cheats was meant for the cartridge version, but since I don't have it, I can't test it.

I just found the rom of the cart version and it looks pretty much the same as the CD version (really good).

From what I recall, Vic Tokai previewed the cart version to the game mags of the day, but then only released the SegaCD version in the US. According to GameFan, the only thing that was changed was taht the so so cart music was replaced with the pretty decent tunes we have on the CD.

I'm pretty sure I remember reading it had some extra levels in some european magazine at that time.

I have the cart version of this game and really think it deserves more attention. Great graphics, cool secrets and lots of levels - but, like others said, no saving/password is a total drag.

What region is the cart version you have? EU/PAL??

Yeah, it's a PAL version, picked up here in Australia way back when. Can't actually find the game, but the instruction book's still around.

OK, this always comes up and people still don't understand. Flink was NOT released on a cart in the USA; it was CD only.
In Europe, it was released on Cart AND CD.

So did Vic Tokai release the cart version for the same price as the CD version here in the US? How about the 32X version?

I don't think there was a 32x version, I'd be very surprised if this is true.

Ive got the mega cd pal version. Nice animation, gameplay is like marioish with some unique quarks like he starts moving in a walk then steadily speeds up instead of holding the run button. Its cool when you are doing a speed part of the level and you run down the hills. Thats how I feel when I run down hills, like I can't stop, just gotta jump over shit. Its a high quality game overall from what I can tell. I haven't gotten too far into it, Ive beaten the first boss and gotten a little farther, but quit playing, so it sucks there isn't a save, but if I remember correctly there might be passwords. The first boss is awesome! Crazy giant evil BillyGoat lookin dude. Overall Psygnosis put out a game that is high quality, definitly a mario type of game, but unique hand drawn animations that look excellent. The music is pretty good, but seemed like they didn't really spread it around enough, I hate when the same song is used for multiple stages etc...Good Game yada yada
