I picked up this game maybe a year and a half ago without hearing much at all on it, and was pleasantly surprised to find out how much ass this game kicks. Absolutely solid game.

The thing I want to know is, why did you have to hook up your DC to play this game??? Given the state of emulation, you're MUCH better off using a PC. Unless... you like the novelty of crappy and/or inaccurate emulation.

Seems like an opportunity to repost GameJew's Mushroom Singdom episode on Mega Turrican:

It's not perfect, but certainly among the better Western developed games of that period. Great graphics and pretty good sound.

I just recently played Accolade's Turrican again. I don't think it's actually that bad of a port, it might be possible that the original Turrican simply was a pretty bad game to begin with. Should be worth a comparison with the Amiga version.

Aside of the music, Mega Turrican is a phenomenal step up from the previous games in the series. The graphics were pretty much state of the art back in early 1993, and few Western developed games had music that sounded as good. Although I think in the review it's pretty comparable to some of Tommy Tallerico's stuff but can't compete with the awesome music by Matt Furniss.

Super Turrican 1 and 2 actually are the sequels to Mega Turrican btw. Mega Turrican was finished several months earlier, but remained unreleased for a year as no one could be found that would publish the game... Here's looking at you, Sega of Europe.

It's a really good game, I initially thought super and Mega were the game, but looked into it ,and they are completely different.

Because I have a MacPro and I haven't put windows on it. The Mac emulator is on my other hardrive.

I actually got my copy yesterday, but I've been too lazy to tell it and only played it once. My first impressions is that it is a good game. I like the sci-fi theme and the music is quite good (although there are way better uses of the MD soundchips). The intro theme and the scaled logo is impressive.

There was once a German guy here, called 108 Stars. He praised (Mega) Turrican as the best thing that ever happened, most likely because Germans made the game (*cough*bias*cough*). He also criticized Alien Soldier for the flickering which happens 3-4 times in the game (most notably on the first boss, which is probably how far he got). He hasn't criticized Mega Turrican for this though, a game with smaller sprites, slower gameplay and just as much, if not even more, flickering as/than Alien Soldier. What hypocrisy!

Its a great game. I still haven't beaten it, Ive gotten pretty far though. I like a lot of the music tracks off of it. I like the ones on SNES, but this one is very solid also.

OMG, how is THAT possible?? In Germany that thing
costs like 30 EUR on ebay, or even a bit more, CART ONLY.

Man, I got the worst country for Mega Drive collecting : (

At least I can say, that germans know a good game when
they see it,, even though they are mostly biased towards
Nintendo and SNES.

Mega Turrican will always be in my top ten list. It sports one of the best intros, a godly soundtrack, awesome stylized graphics, and really fun, challenging gameplay.

Ya, he got lucky. I spent four months watching ebay for a decent copy.
I finally got a complete copy for $47.50 Canadian including shipping [$9.50 ship]

I did find copies of Streets of Rage 3 and Gunstar Heroes minus the manuals plus The Revenge of Shinobi, Tinhead and Batman Forever, all complete and $10 for all, so I've had my share of lucky finds too.

Play it some more and express your love for it! But seriously, it's an awesome game. You should give it a chance ;)

Kinda strange that he compared it to Alien Soldier. Completely different games. And there's nothing wrong with a little bit of flicker either (and lot of early snes games had it bad too). I'll take a little extra flicker here and there, if it means they are normally pushing a lot of sprites around. The more, the merrier :)

MT is another Genesis great and it's been part of my Top 10 for years. Addicting, challenging, and great fun. I like it a little more than Super Turrican because of the superior control.

Like KnightWarrior, i've got one CIB and one loose.

While Super Turrican 2 is my favorite of the series, Mega Turrican is totally awesome and a great addition to the series. Chris Hulsbeck's music can't be beat! Hardcore Gamer 101 did a great write-up on the whole series here:

This is the first game I ever smelled when I opened it up. :P

I remember buying it from the 1/2 Price Store (that place only lasted a couple years) in about '95-'96 for $20 in the bargain bin because the artwork on the cover was awesome, and on the drive back home I opened it up and noticed a sweet smell then took a big whiff of the case and manual - it was glorious. I'm surprised that some used games will occasionally still have that new game smell, and I always think of Mega Turrican when I smell it. It helps too that the game was great - a great all-around nostalgia trip every time.

Genesis version is Turrican 3 (Well... the amiga has Turrican 3, but it's a port of mega turrican).
SNES version is a heavily upgraded and totally modified Turrican 2.

TG-16 version is a terrible lazy port of Turrican 1.

Super Turrican 2 on the SNES is perfection... except for the shitty soundtrack.

07-16-2011, 07:02 AM
There is no SNES version, Super Turrican is a completely different game. Turrican 3 is the name of the Amiga port, and it is by far worse than the Mega Drive original due to the complicated controls and one less background layer. The music is sometimes better thanks to the high quality samples of Paula, but sometimes worse because of fewer channels.

The colors in Turrican 3 are worse, imo, a shame considering Amiga's capabilities

It's a lazy port, there's plenty they could have done to make the colors BETTER than the genesis version.
It's amazing but they managed to overuse dual playfield mode (which makes you lose a ton of color) while UNDER using it (in the sense that the far background could easily be made without using it).

The only good Turrican ever made... OK besides the Turrican II for C-64 for nostalgic reasons... just yesterday I was compiling a list of Genesis games, both Turricans 1+2 and Universal Soldier were fired... too lame gameplay design, not worth flooding great Genesis library...

I have always thought that Mega Turrican is an improved verison of that Amiga T3 that as you say, lacks proper parallax backgrounds and also runs into serious hardware sprites overflow issues (no wonder when there are just 8 of them comprared to 20/80!!!, no matter if some Chilli Willies will try to argue with some of those per scanline blitter bullshit arguments...)

Kamahl
07-16-2011, 12:35 PM
It's 8*k/<infinity> vs 20/80 :p. The farthest background in Jim Power (amiga version) is a SINGLE SPRITE.

Recently I discovered Mega Turrican and I was disappointed.
Old school computer design (like other ports - Psygnosis & cie).
Not the blast I was waiting for. It is not a bad game. Rather good
and overrated. Not a must have in a player collection imho.

You think sega asked the makers of the turrican series to do there port on the genesis better in sort of deal, I mean look at turrican 2, something fishy went on the third game.

mega turrican is great BUT TURRICAN ON THE GENESIS IS JUST AWFUL.

Turrican 3 is the name of the Amiga port, and it is by far worse than the Mega Drive original due to the complicated controls and one less background layer. The music is sometimes better thanks to the high quality samples of Paula, but sometimes worse because of fewer channels.
The samples aren't especially good in Turrican 3 . . . some are arguably more fitting than the FM instruments (but always with trade-offs -namely muffled/aliasing), many others are worse than the better FM instruments, and most/all percussion samples are considerably worse than the MD PCM samples (too short and/or low quality/muffled) with the partial exception of the intro tune. (which I'll bet uses more memory than the in-game stuff and possibly some software mixed channels like several other Amiga intro demos -like Turrican II :p ) The intro is also the only track absent in Mega Turrican and probably the better of the 2. (though Mega Turrican's Intro is pretty nice too)

The only other issue is tempo . . . but that's a general PAL vs NTSC thing and not Amiga/MD related (both versions play faster in 60 Hz than 50 iirc). I think all tracks were made for 50 Hz (and a few sound much better in 50 Hz too) but some actually sound better at the up tempo IMO.

There's this comparison, of course (with Mega in 60 Hz and 3 in 50 Hz it seems), listing most of the really good tracks on both:
