can you play import SMS games on it? then again i'm not sure the SMS even had region lock. I just want to play renegade so bad! (was it released state side?)

The region of the PBC is based on the host system.

I've got a US copy of "Outrun" to flash the "Mark III" screen just by using the region switch.

The other games I had at the time either did nothing or didn't work when set to JP.

I have the Power base converter and Genesis Model 1 without the "Produce by sega..blah blah"

You can give it a try. But I'm pretty sure European MS games work on US systems.

I just got a Tectoy PBC that reads 3D Input in the card slot. What's with it?

The Master System had a few games that supported special 3D-Glasses; the first edition of the Power Base converter made it possible to connect these glasses as well, via the Card Slot usually reserved for Card-based Master System games. These would only work on specific Master System games, though. Later editions of the PBC omitted that card slot.

Nowadays these 3D-glasses are very hard to come by.

/edit: Here's a picture of said glasses:

Xenon 2: Megablast for Master System will not play on a US Genesis / Power Base Converter. It is one of the few - if not the only - Master System games with region lockout.

I have the 3D adaptor kicking around without the glasses.

I don't suppose that the adaptor is any rarer, considering how 'breakable' glasses would be.

Back to the future III and Xenon 2 won't play at all on a US console period! region modding will probably fix that though. There are other games that have resolution issues and what not but the issues won't hinder you from playing them.

There are certain US games that have issues with a US PBC such as Montezuma's Revenge, it plays but will only work with an original SMS controller.

There may be others but I can't think of them.

Maze Hunter 3D was sooooo awesome. Aside from the raging headaches and the pressing weight on the bridge of your nose, those 3D glasses kicked ass.

Most European games will work fine, but Japanese carts won't because they have a completely different shape and pinout.

SMS is supposed to be region free, as mentioned some games don't work. All the ones I've tried work just fine on my powerbase converter though (even the "newer" games like Sonic Chaos), so chances are you're good to go.

Those 3D glasses rock! I'm still looking for copies of Line Of Fire and Outrun 3D to complete my SMS 3D game collection. I haven't found an EU version of a game yet that won't play on my SMS though as mentioned above there probably are some.

okay guys I got R-Type,Black Belt and Pro-wrestling (from stoneagegamer.com) Black Belt and Pro-Wrestling work with no problems. but R-type freezes and restarts randomly, I cleaned the cart and everything, is it one of the games that require the SMS controller? I know it isn't listed in the games that have problems in the Manuel, but just curious if anyone else had the problems.

on a side note I can't stop playing Black Belt..simple but fun!

Black Belt originally was a game based on Hokuto No Ken:

And there's also a Mega Drive sequel (called 'Last Battle' in the EU/US).

Definitely not my type of games, although I probably will try them again sooner or later.

Nice pick-ups! R-Type plays just fine on a Power Base Converter with Genesis controllers. Not sure why you're encountering issues. Keep cleaning?

Only a *very* small handful of Master System games require Master System controllers. I can post a complete list if it'd be helpful.

Quick note about the Mega Drive sequel. Anyone interested in this game may want to consider importing the Japanese version of Hokuto no Ken instead of playing Last Battle (ie, the US / EU version). What's the difference? Blood - LOTS of blood. The JP version retains the blood splattering exploding heads of the manga, while the US / EU versions are built around a different story without gratuitous violence. A quick search on Youtube will demonstrate how different the two games are.

I actually have Last battle.. I find Black Belt to be better oddly.

I think the Genesis may need to be modded to fit the Mega Adapter, but I'm not entirely sure as I've never seen the bottom of one.

yeah the JPN version of the PBC as the cart like the MD games, so you prolly need the cart slot on the Genny widen

still no luck with r-type, it just freezes after a little bit and sometimes makes it like the genesis isn't even sending out a video signal. but only happens when I play R-Type. the other 2 games give me absolutely no problems.

You need to power on the MD, then insert the PBC with game in it to get past that... its the only workaround I know that works with that weird problem.

Okay, The HDG model 1 works perfect with R-type, the later Model 1 (non-hdg) freezes with R-type.

Glad to hear R-Type is finally working for you!

Does anyone know of any other Master System games that freeze on a later Model 1 or Model 2 Genesis? To clarify, I'm not referring to games that require Master System controllers, but rather games that are affected by the model of Genesis hardware one uses. R-Type is the first Master System game I've heard of having this issue.

Thanks for the tip, TmEE. Is there any danger to harming a game or system by doing this? Just curious, as I'm far from tech saavy.

Just something curious I just found out. I don't know if this is a well known fact or not.

The tectoy Power Base Converter fits nicely and without modifications on the Megadrive 3. Apparently it has a longer back than the american/japanese, as the base stand out when inserted on the Megadrive 1, and is the same lenght than the Megadrive 3.

I just have to make it work. It works on my Megadrive 1, tough...

I'll post pics soon.
