View Full Version : Which portable Genesis clone is best?

Between the Retrogen, Retrobit, and Genmobile, which is the best? From what I've seen, here's my own analysis:
Genmobile and Retrogen seem comparable, but the Retrogen has an SD card slot for "lisenced" ROMs. So it won't take downloaded ROMs then? Anyone have any experience with that?
The Retrobit has no cartridge slot and uses AAA batteries, so when the battery dies you don't have a $50 paperweight on your hands, so that's cool. I'm not too sure if I'm really keen on the missing cartridge slot though...
So yes, anyone have any thoughts or anything to add?

I agree.
Get a Nomad, six 3000 mah AA's, the audio mod, and the LCD screen mod...and you'll be in portable Genesis heaven.
Could even get a Super Wide Gear and glue it to the Nomad...

They're all crap.
CORRECT.
I wouldn't wipe my ass with any of the modern-day clone systems, let alone use them for any serious gaming.

I have the retrogen and am pretty happy with it. I had to return the first one I ordered since the plastic screen was placed on the unit upside down, but I haven’t heard of anyone else having this problem.
Also be aware that the retrogen does not come with an sd card slot. There has been talk of a cartridge with an sd slot which will play on the retrogen but I have no idea when or if that will happen.

Huh... I kept hearing that it did have one... or maybe I'm thinking of a different one. Either way, the cartridge + SD card slot sounds pretty cool. Any idea what it's called or who's putting it out?

Before it came out I remember reading that the retrogen was going to have an sd slot, but the final release definately does not have one.
I have no idea when/if the sd cart is going to come out. I only learned about it from watching this video on youtube.

i got the retrogen i have fun with castle of illusion but the sound is off pitch
and carts are hard to remove and ive never been able to get it to work on the first insertion
so basically my regime is to insert cart remove cart insert cart and hit the switch its like a compultion the machine has created in me since even my cleanest cart hardly ever works the first time
i also have a nomad but its blur is annoying and i hate the dpad(but its not as bad as the flat slippery one on my retro (which i fixed with a little disk of 3m polymer friction tape its like grip tape but not sandy)
The only clone it makes sense to get is an NES clone, as the originals are so unreliable and the top loaders go for $$$. Genesis' go for so cheap and there are so many of them and they work fine, whats the point of buying a clone?

The FC3plus is an excellent clone, much better audio and video than most original variants (model 2, model 3, late model 1) if you can live without the original controllers, Master System / SCD / 32X compatibility, and don't plan on hooking up your Genny to your HDTV via RGB to HDMI converter.
What are all these mods you talk about sir? :|
If you got a Nomad and send it to TmEE he can offer you all kinds of improvements - from screen replacement to Master System compatibility fix to 50/60 Hz and region switches.

I have one, it's flakey controllers are proprietary & the NES playback is backwards. ABC XYZ for Genesis layout, the A and B are backwards for NES games, keeping the correct letters mapped.
It sucks on Double Dragon 2 or Punch Out where button direction determines gameplay differences. Right = left isn't very cool for the nostalgic mind.
The genesis playback is good, the sound is off though, the bass sounds are louder and distorted in the mix. Plays every cart I threw at it, has a JPN switch on it too. Not a bad clone for the genesis side. Just go easy on the controllers.

I've never seen a good portable Genesis clone, they all reak of cheap Chinese knockoff, the plastic is crap quality, the sound is terrible and they usually have other problems like poor button responsiveness or button sticking.

If you want to give your kid a cheap MD mobile that plays the actual carts, the best out is probably the GenMobile. It has a good dpad, decent buttons, and a nice display. The screen size might be a little small for us old folks with reading glasses, but should be fine for a kid. The sound might be off, but the kid won't know that. It's also cheap. Get a GenMobile and a handful of cheap MD carts from eBay and you have a decent retro present for the kid.
If you're an adult into retro gaming, get a Nomad and mod the heck out of it.

GenMobile, I'd say as well. Although, if we're talking about handheld clones of the Genesis/MD that will use your cartridges, then there's just the two (the other one being the Retrogen). Not much of a choice, really.

Imo Genmobil is the better of the two, Mainly due to the d-pad. But what I wanna know is why they keep making all these genesis clones? I mean if their gonna make a bootleg(licensed or not) why keep making a genesis why not make a sega neptune? Especially since Sega is giving them the rights on some of them anyway.

Good question.
And why don't they make licensed bootleg Sega 32CDX's yet???
Holy crap, if they actually worked on the emulation, or used Fusion with HQ audio, and TV mode enabled, then it'd be pretty damn sweet to play on your TV with.
Especially if they used the original Genesis controller ports, so first party controllers would be compatible.
