View Full Version : Questions about Genesis emulators

I've looking at all of the emulators available, and so far... I can't make up my mind :daze:

On one hand, I hear a lot of great things about Picodrive, and on another hand, great things about DGen, which I may lean to more, because of its full screen option if I do decide to mod a PSP for emulation on the go goodness, since stretched out video would really piss me off, so I have a few questions, since a lot of you seem to be experts in this.

Do they all support ROMs in .bin format? I mostly have ROMs in that format...

If I do load ROMs into a PSP or anything else, can I load translation patches or patches for ROM hacks, or ANY other patch as well?

Which one is best for a PSP PERIOD?

I ask these because I'm not very technically minded so I need all the help I can get :?
Please and thank you!

The only Genesis emu for the PSP that I used is PicoDrive, because it's the one I have. It can load roms in both .bin and .zip formats, and it does support patched games (I have some of the Phantasy Star II text adventures and Battle Mania 2 with translation patches, and they work perfectly)

PicoDrive is the emu to use on the PSP. You get SEGA CD as well as Genesis. DGen is only Genesis. PicoDrive is also more up-to-date than DGen. In most cases, it's also faster.

Picodrive X1000. First of all, you can play the games in the proper aspect ratio. Second of all, as already said, Sega CD FTW. Picodrive is probably the best emulator behind Kega Fusion as far as I'm concerned.

For windows, definitely Fusion, a bit simple with the stock options, but very accurate (especially sound), and also the most compatible. (and of course includes SMS, 32x, and SCD compatibility as well -only CD requiring an additional bios)

Gens is another opinion, but I only use that for messing around with things like looking at separate graphics layers and such, the sound is the most noticeable difference. Fusion lacks some of the bells and whistles of gems, like allowing certain things to be disabled (sprite limiting, BG layers, sound channels and such -variable frame skip), but otherwise, it's inferior to Fusion and requires an additional bios for 32x games.
If you wanted to play a super flickery game though, Gems could eliminate the flicker. (fusion does offer it for the SMS, but not MD for some reason)

For PSP, I'm not sure, but I've heard good things about pico-drive.

I vote Picodrive, which works much better than DGen. Though, I did have trouble getting Landstalker to work on Picodrive

The worst part about Landstalker is the fact that there's a corrupt rom kicking around out there that's unbeatable. A glitch near the end-game prevents further progress.
