View Full Version : Genny to S-video

I would like to mod my Gen to s-video.

I have both a model 1 and model 2 and Sega CD.

I have seen the article on sega-16, and several threads on the web discussing the mod, and several forwards to companies willing to do the mod for a fee.

Are there any on-line guides actually depicting the steps involved? I haven't discovered any myself.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Check out this thread on the Neo Geo forums:

Be sure to click on the links and use solder.

Ok, does the XMD-3 and the DIY S-video mod net you the same looking results?

Furthermore, if you have a XMD-3 hooked up to a 32X (meaning you use a 32X for output) are the graphics cleaned up a bit more than a system without a 32X?

Just curious as I might purchase one...

The XMD-3 uses RGB, so it makes no difference whether you output from the Genesis or the 32X, since the 32X steals the Genesis' RGB anyway. However you must output from a Genesis 2 if you are not going out of the 32X as the XMD-3 has a Genesis 2 connection (they make one with e Genesis 1 connection but I think it costs a bit more). I don't know how the mod looks, but if you get a good XMD-3 they should look the same.

That answers my questions, and it wasn't in the guide. I'd presume they'd look the same because I think both mods require the Sony CXA1145P chip.

The 1145P is a pretty basic chip. It's found in the Neo Geo and I think the Genesis 1 and early Genesis 2's. The Sony CXA1645M is a much better chip and can be found in later Genesis 2's and the Genesis 3. I am too lazy to take my XMD-3 apart to see what chip it uses unless you want me to.

wait a second... I just had a thread like this in a different site that was never replied to so here it goes...
could you possibly get a SCART rgb thingy (I live in the US, and I'm wondering if it'll work on my TV) and use one of those conecters that convert SCART to S Video. Will it work on an NSTC TV? the scart is not sold in the US.

It would work BUT you'll have to get something that converts SCART RGB to s-video, not just SCART to s-video. If it is a non-RGB converter, it will just assume that the s-video signal is being sent over the SCART cable, which it most assuredly is not when hooked up to a Genesis. I convert the SCART RGB into component. Screw s-video.

so in other words something like this (http://www.jvb.nl/jvb.asp?cur=2&level=accessoires&page=title&title=226) would be bad?

is this better?
ding! (http://www.svideo.com/ypbprsv1.html)

or are any of those good?
either way, do you know of a good source of component input? (not TV, must be an adaptor or DVD player/combo)

Yes, that would be bad.

I wouldn't think so. You're not going to find something decent for that price.

I'm not sure I understand this question.

oh... you mean something like this:
this (http://www.js-technology.com/product_info.php?cPath=22&products_id=34&osCsid=20794e26b0b5f96b8c9d436afb329eeb)
 it costs way too much

or maybe this:
meow (http://www.js-technology.com/product_info.php?products_id=47&osCsid=fe4109866753822a88b76e6bf1651d17)
with this:
meow (http://www.js-technology.com/product_info.php?products_id=31&osCsid=fe4109866753822a88b76e6bf1651d17)
this is a bit cheaper :D
and if I do use component... I'll look for different stuff

edit: I know why some won't work... I need the dream box =(.
but will the things on this post work?
super edit: will this work:
this (http://www.maplin.co.uk/Free_UK_Delivery/RGB_to_S-Video_and_Composite_Video_Convertor_30782/RGB_to_S-Video_and_Composite_Video_Convertor_30782.htm)
I'm most confident in that one! =)

thanks!

thanks segasonicsfan and Joe Redifer for posting that link/ correcting me so many times (so I didn't do wrong stuff and waste money)!!!! :D:D :D
so it works right? that's a stupid question... segasonicsfan is a genius so of course it works!

Ummm.. that RGB to s-video thingy is way too expensive for what it is. But a RGB to component adaptor (http://www.hometheatre.net.au/cyu2100.htm) will run you about $99 or so from Australia (not sure why the price is $16 more on the page I link to). Get a MD RGB SCART cable from the UK for about $20 or so. I use the $99 RGB to component converter for my Genesis, Saturn, SNES, and Neo Geo. Soon for the TurboGrafx-16 as well. Well worth it for me. You'll also need to go to Radio Shack and get an AC Adaptor that will do 7.5 volts and get the proper tip (I think it is tip "M").
