Hopefully the picture turns up, best I could do with just my blackberry. I had some spare time the other day so I took the thumbstick from a broken 360 controller and swapped out a wireless arcade controller's dpad with it. The final product is grand, plays very smooth and comfortably.
Initially I tried the thumbstick from a playstation dual shock controller, but I highly prefer the dip vs arch, I find your thumb slides less and the play is better centralized.

That looks interesting, though wouldn't the direct mapping of digital to analog make the joystick kinda finicky?

That's pretty neat if it works without any problems, but in my opinion using an analog to play 2D games made for use with a d-pad is just wrong.
I actually bought an additional pad for my 360 just so I would have a decent d-pad to play XBLA because the the 360 controller's d-pad is a steaming pile of Malamute feces.

I think what he did was just take the thumbstick and mounted inside the controller; there's no way you could take the entire analog stick and make it work in the confines of a 6-button controller.

That's a very interesting mod. And he *did* say he just used the thumbstick, right on, the entire analog thing wouldn't fit inside without major cutting.
Nice.

I'm just interested about the look of this controller before it actually was modded. That "1/2" clippy thingy at the bottom has really caught my eye.

That's the infrared wireless controller ; ) This thingy at the bottom
is for switching between 1st player and 2nd player (the receive
unit plugs in into both ports, so there has to be a way to tell the
system, which port the controller should adress).
It looks simply as a 6-button controller, save for the obvious differences
like slightly different form, switch on the bottom and start button is not
in the middle and is grey. D-pads are identical as far I know.
