Is it possible to host your own sega channel?
As in, buy one of these (http://cgi.ebay.com/Sega-Channel-with-Original-Box-for-Sega-Genesis_W0QQitemZ220583074881QQcmdZViewItemQQptZVi deo_Games_Accessories?hash=item335bc69c41), then somehow run your own cable channel from a Linux machine with a tv-out card...
Has anyone done this?

Why exactly do you want this? And I'm not sure Sega would be too happy about using their proprietary network as a freebie.
why not? its not like theyre gonna care?
can't image a bunch of SEGA execs having a sh!t fit over it.
Still can it be done?

Never underestimate dormant corporate wrath. Sega might be turning a blind eye to the furries but this is a service with their name on it and someone somewhere might push the legal panic button.
Anyway is it doable? There's little interest to begin with.. As evidenced by the topic I linked to earlier.

I don't see what that thread you linked to has to do with Sega Channel.
Sega Channel allowed you to download ROM images to the Sega Channel cart and play them locally. It wasn't for online multiplayer.

Well, no. You would need a modified analog cable modem.
It's like the Sega modem, to reverse engineer it you couldn't use a 56K modem or even a U.S Robotics V.Everything (as awesome as they are) you would need a Telephony board (google it) and special software to listen to the line.

WTF are you talking about? The Sega Channel was basically a one-way cable modem with onboard RAM to store a game. ROMs are 1000000X bigger threat than anything you could do with a Sega Channel modem.
wrong...godzilla is a bigger threat than roms.

I don't see how that contradicts his statement... He didn't say ROMs were a bigger threat than godzilla... :p
well he didn't even mention Godzilla, thats just rude

Welcome back, 17days!

Anyway, a working "Sega Live" via Sega Channel would be awesome! Of course, not many people nowadays have a Genesis and even fewer have Sega Channel carts. If someone does manage to toss this together, I'd be interested in trying to get in on a game, that is, if I had the proper equipment which I doubt I do. Maybe Tmee would have some insight of this...hmm...

Actually the Sega Channel modem had an, albeit slow, upstream data signal.

Every time this subject is brought up I end up searching google for an hour and end up mad.
I would love to see a recreated sega channel as much as the next guy but it would be near impossible to recreate a connection to Denver, Colorado meaning the roms would need to be supplied elsewhere on the net or from your computer.
The rom needs complete disassembly, something the big name hackers wouldn't be interested in and even then you would need a way to code the rom to load other games which those would need proper disassembly.
So unless someone has a breakthrough thesis on how to load other games, your basically going to be playing nothing but sonic 1.
God, I wish I had at least played sega channel once. :(
I wish you could just play multiplayer.

I'm sure that is possible but that would take serious work, even then it might just be only lan enabled.
Commodore 64 accomplished such a feat two years ago.

If Nintendo would pull their head out of their ass, they could probably recreate a virtual Sega Channel as part of the VC. But no, Nintendo would rather dump some ROMs and sell them at inflated prices rather than do something the devoted retro community would actually want.
could say the same about Microsoft I spose'

I never got a chance to use sega channel, but I did play the wily wars as a rom. I want a cart version of that one, but haven't seen the mega drive euro version on eBay (us) once.

Your better off buying a repro unless you are an avid collector.
Wily wars in any region will go for at least 100/200 dollars easily.
Sega probably wouldn't be able to retain all the licensed games such as Garfield so a recreated sega channel wouldn't look that much different than the past few compilation discs.
I just want the missing roms dumped because legally sega would have to trade its left nut for something like earthworm jim - Special edition and anything from a defunct company like ocean.

I'd be fine with a repo actually....any place have wily wars with the same artwork?

One of the members here made some repros a while back.
Other than that, I got nothing.

I found one on gamegavel awhile back....but he wanted 125 buy it now price and 100 minimum bid. Thought it was steep for a repro.

gamereproductions.com sell their genesis repros for 30.
The only bad part to it is wily wars isn't listed. Only a translated bare knuckle 3 and few forgettable games. I know alot of people who would pay for repros of alien soldier, pulseman and wily wars.
But 150 asking price should be reserved for an actual complete cart w/box and instructions.

Would people actuality use the new Sage Channel??

It all depends on the content and how its distributed.
If its just the best seller genesis games in which you have to pay separately for each game then no, I wouldn't donate even a dime towards that cause.
If they bring back an on demand channel which all the exclusive games intact along which test drives, contests and maybe new content provided by tectoy I would definitely jump aboard the sega train.
For the asking price for sega channel back then, it seemed reasonable, and it still does provided we could use an internet connection instead and still have access to the games long after the new channel is shut down.
Man, I got stop with all this day dreaming.

There was a guy selling them on Racketboy for like $35. I don't remember his name, but it was fairly recent, so just scan the buy/sell/trade section until you track it down.
Personally, repros don't do much for me because A) emulation is super accurate for pre-Saturn systems B) the EEPROMs only have an estimated 20 year lifespan and I buy games mostly for archival purposes (real cartridges could last forever theoretically, at least as far as I know) C) they aren't exactly cheap and are just a pirate copy when you get down to it. There's no genuine collector value in it, so it really only appeals to people wanting to play it on real hardware. D) For the price of a few repros, you could buy a reusable flash cart and play any Genesis game you want.
