i choose sonic 2. sonic 3/k is amazing but it just doesnt take a sledgehammer to my nostalgia button like sonic 2 does. i just recently discovered sonic 3/k a few years ago. sonic 2 was the first genesis game i ever played and it still remains one of my favorites, especially the music.

Sonic 2! The best in the series. I really didn't like Sonic 3 (and Knuckles), and Sonic CD is pretty overrated

Sonic3&Knuckles. can't stop to play it!
But overall i've enjoyed most of his games until Sega became a software house only.
something like:
Sonic3&Knuckles > sonic 2 > sonic1 > Sonic&Knuckles-alone > sonic 3-alone > sonic 3D > Sonic2&Knucles. (Sonic1&Knuckles is not listed :p)
About Sonic CD and Knuckles Chaotix, i still don't own a 32X or a MegaCD... (i hate play on emulators mega drive games i don't own )

I said Sonic 2 and Knuckles because it's such a different experience. Also, is there such a thing as Sonic 1 and Knuckles?

There's a rom hack with Knuckles in Sonic 1. Other than that, just the Blue Sphere game.

I voted for the first Sonic the Hedgehog. I got my Genesis when that was the pack in game (Model 1 Genny, still said "High Definition Graphics" but had TMSS), and that was the only game that I had for awhile so I used to play the crap out of it. I never liked the subsequent Sonic games as much, but to be fair, I never spent that much time with them, either. I own all of them, though, so I really should sit down and play through them. Sonic 1 and Golden Axe are the two games that REALLY take me back to the days when I first got the Genesis, so in my eyes they will always be the best installments in their respective series.

Where's Sonic Unleashed? Kidding :P
Anyway here's the order
16bit: S3>S&K>S1>S2>S3DB>SCD
32bit: N/A
6thGen: SA>SA2>SH
7thGen: N/A
Handheld: SR>SRA

Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
Great music, very good graphics, a HUGE quest (with progress save thank God), levels built for speed and exploration... great stuff.

Probably Sonic 3 & Knuckles followed by Sonic 2/Knuckles in Sonic 2. S3&K was one of the first Genesis games I got to play much, albeit on the PC along with Garfield and later, BUG!
I do like 3D blast more than average too.
The infinite continues and save feature really makes Sonic 3 and 3&K for me, plus the full level select after completing the game. (and ability to go back through multiple passes to complete the emerald collection and such, I don't think sonic CD does that) That and Tails can fly...
A lot of people love the 8-bit games though, but I haven't played them enough to be sure. People generally are positive about Sonic 1, Chaos, and iirc Tripple Trouble, but mixed comments go to Sonic 2 (which I like), and some others like Sonic Blast. (even a few who like Labyrinth and even 8-bit spinball...)
I know Tiido likes Sonic Blast.
The SMS versions are generally preferable to the GG ons due to the window size (256x192/224 vs 160x144) --not to mention physical screen size.
Kind of a moot point anyway since none of those are on the list. ;)

My main gripe with Sonic 2 was that you had Tails following you around, and I found that distracting. I used to spend may too much time and effort just trying to ditch him. I don't understand who thought that *that* was what the series needed. "Man, Sonic the Hedgehog is a great game, but it would be soooo much better if there were a little dude following you around mimicking your every movement." Every time I level that complaint, someone counters it by saying "But there's times when you need him!". Yeah, the designers did that so that there would be a reason to have him in the game. It's not like they designed areas of the game that Sonic couldn't handle by himself and then added Tails as a means of fixing the problem. Someone decided that Sonic needed a sidekick and then designed a game that made it necessary.

Sonic CD all the way. I played that one after all the genesis games and found it very refreshing. It gives you a whole new goal and it's really interesting to see the different time zones. The graphics and music are a lot different in style than the genesis games too, which adds some points.

Metal Slug!
Oh, wait... Man, I'm surprised that I've only played Sonic 1 and 2 (and Sonic Adventure, but that's not on the list). So... I have no choice but to go with Sonic 2 just because of the ability to "charge up" a spin. (is that what it's called?) I need to get playin' some Sonic. But first, more Metal Slug. :D
EDIT: Woops, I meant Sonic Adventure. See how little of Sonic I play nowadays?

Sonic 3&Knuckles is really good but it loses points for having Marble Garden, which is probably my most hated zone ever. I also wasn't crazy about Carnival Night or Launch Base. I liked jumping on the balloons in Carnival Night but overall it was just a mediocre level and it seemed like the pallette should've been less muted. The only memorable thing from Launch Base was getting to ride in Robotnik's hovercraft.

I love Marble Garden. :(
I hate these favourite Sonic game threads. I can never decide, and end up thinking through all the negatives about the 16-bit Sonics (most notably the goddamn Metropolis Zone and all its crapperies, and Labyrinth Zone with all its cheap foes and slowness) but still never come to any conclusions.
I will say that Sonic 3D and Chaotix can have no place among my favourites (self explanatory :p). Neither does Knuckes in S2 (Why can't you jump higher, you purple git! I never did beat the last boss :( ). I do like Sonic CD, but it always felt like they worked too hard on making the levels huge & changeable (between time zones) and didn't care to try and make them perfect (it always annoyed me that Sonic seems to get snagged on jaggedy bits sometimes, or slows down awkwardly - it's like an unfinished hack). Also, SCD has Wacky Workbench... unforgiveable. So, imo it can't sit comfortably alongside the cart games for pure awesomeness - I still like it a lot though, and wouldn't've played it so many times otherwise :)
But anyway - the short answer is that I like all of S1 - S3&K too much to pick a favourite. Probably ever. :/

Neither does Knuckes in S2 (Why can't you jump higher, you purple git! I never did beat the last boss :( ). true, last boss with knuckles is much harder, the easier (and slower) way to kill him is to hit him when he crouches after he flyes away :p (how much big is the death egg anyway!?)

Hmmm, that was a tough question, like asking which of my kids I like the best.
I love sonic and still play sonic2 and sonic and knuckles often but I voted sonic, the original and still the best (for me). Like many, it was the first game I played on SEGA's 16-bit platform so holds a special place.

It's really a tossup for me. I grew up on Mario, so all of the Sonic games are a really tough sale for me. I want to like them, but each one in the series has something I hate.
Sonic 1: No spin dash, primitive level design, and that bug with the spikes.
Sonic 2: Annoying water levels early on in the game.
Sonic 3 & Knuckles: Annoyingly high difficulty compared to the first 2.
Sonic 3 & Knuckles, if any. I like Sega's other titles so much more though.

I really like Sonic CD as well. It doesn't get the attention that the other games, do probably because far fewer people had a SegaCD system, but I think it's a great game. The Sonic games already had great soundtracks, and the music for that title really shines thanks to the CD-quality audio.

Sonic CD is a pretty decent game. I think the time travel concept actually detracts from it though. Would be better to just have more regular levels.

Sonic cd for me. The music is great, the intro screen screams that it's something different, and the level design feel worlds apart from the cart games level designs. The time travel thing was a unique idea, but I usually don't even mess with that part of it. The bonus stages are where I have problems, I always under or over shoot the ufos

Now this is a hard one. The first game I ever played (Sonic 2), or the game that has one of the best Sega CD soundtracks in addition to amazing game-play (Sonic CD). I guess Sonic CD by the skin of it's teeth just because of SONIC BOOM

Sonic 2 by a good margin.
Question: Were Sonic Adventure DX Director's Cut and Sonic Gems Collection only released on GameCube in the US? I'm really only interested in the 12 game gear titles. There were 12 Game Gear games on DX. 6 of those were released on Gems collection, and 6 were released on Mega Collection Plus.

Well I'm familiar with seeing complaints about Tails in Sonic 2... Personally I always enjoyed having Tails tagging along. Never minded him even on the special stages (once I got used to them of course).
At least in Sonic 2 you can select to play w/ Sonic and Tails, or just Sonic, or even just Tails.
I don't think Tails really does help in any critical areas in Sonic 2. AFAIK the Sonic w/ Tails default setting is really no easier than playing with just Sonic or Tails alone. I never got the impression that parts of Sonic 2 were really designed for the 2 characters... I always thought Sonic 3&K was the game that had a marked difference in difficulty, depending on who you chose to play as... The difference in difficulty comes from the different characters' abilities, including Sonic & Tails to interact once in a while. In Sonic 2 they really don't directly interact w/ each other, plus both Sonic & Tails play exactly the same afaik, including the exact same speed, whearas in S3&K, Knuckles & Tails are a little slower than Sonic, so I never wanted to play w/ them much. lol

Yep, they're the same, only that in a higher resolution
Mega Collection Plus only contains the first Game Gear game. Gems Collection has the second. Unfortunately, the PS2 version wasn't released in the US (Americans only got it on the GameCube). If you want them both on the same disc, get Sonic Adventure DX for GameCube or PC, and it also includes the rest of the Game Gear Sonics (Chaos, Triple Trouble, Blast, Drift 1 and 2, Labyrinth, Spinball, Tails' Adventure, Tails' Skypatrol and Mean Bean Machine)
