I bought a Dreamcast game at GW for cheap and it came from a Blockbuster store complete with some kind of magnetic security sticker attached to the game disc. My first idea, and one that has worked successfully many times before, was to use a razor window scraper on the painted disc surface to remove the offending sticker. Bad idea. I proceeded to peel away a section of the foil backing for the data portion of the disc. Suffice it to say that this game is now essentially trash.

If the sticker was one of those "VOID" residue stickers, I would have peeled it and left the rest alone. It's called "Optical media" for a reason, rather than "Magnetic media". Other than possible issues with the DC hardware (maybe I'm thinking of something else here), it'd be just fine.

I usually let things like that soak in Turtle Wax bug and tar remover for a few hours. They just peel off after that.

I've got a copy of Soul Reaver that's plastered with Blockbuster stickers (or maybe they're Box Office Video stickers. Or some local game rental places). I decided just to leave it alone because I didn't give much of a crap about it since the game wasn't something I was too interested in, but they had it at the local game store so I got it.

I use Goo Be Gone for most stickers like that.

I always used Goo Gone for most stickers, including annoying metallic stickers from rental companies. Let it soak for a minute or two, then wipe. (see above link, no "Be")
is their not a way you can reapply said reflective layer? I know its a retarded question but I was wondering.

sweet Christ, My copy of Strikers 1945 for the PS1 has one of those miserable stickers on it. It reads BLOCKBUSTER PPG disc on the hub, a label that reads WARNING: Removal of the DISC-SHIELDtm will cause permanent damage, if this label is removed. Customers must pay for the cost of the disc.. This thing covers the entire disc, and has two metallic-looking strips on it. I hate this sticker with a passion, and would love to find the person responsible for it's creation and throw them a little "party"......

I agree! Like a tie them to a chair and pull their fingernails out with a pair of needlenose pliers type of party.

Or better still, apply some duct-tape to their hairy, sensitive body parts and tell them:
You wanna take a leak? Well, go ahead, but first You're gonna' have to pull that tape off.....

Eye for an eye, My good man.
The only punishment I can think of that would be worse would be to make the inventor actually work in a blockbuster video, or similar rental shop.

It wasn't one of the famous silver-foil "void" stickers, but a blue one that covered half the original painted on game label. It was navy blue in color and had one of those magnetic foil strips embedded. I was able to peel the foil strip out before the game's backing material came off. One thing that might have worked better would have been a heat gun. If only I had tried that first...

I never use knives/razors to remove stuff on plastic... what's the point of removing it that way if it damages the plastic... (glass/metal is another issue)
Only problem with other methods (alcohol, solvents, grease, goo-gone, or even butter) is when the sticker is over the label on a cart... especially if the sticker is far less permeable than the label. (I had a vinyl barcode sticker that destroyed the label on TFII)

Main reason I tried to remove it was because it covered half the original painted label and I feared it would unbalance the disc, possibly damaging the spindle drive on my DC. You know, like how you shouldn't drive with unbalanced tires on your car for fear of what it will do to your suspension and steering components.

really sorry to hear it
I share your frustration as I don't understand how people can be so stupid with these types of things.... blows my mind. I'm anal retentive when it comes to taking care of my Electronics/Game stuff, wish everyone else was the same, but I guess that's asking too much. :|

why couldn't you peel it off using your finger nail? (or a plastic scraper)
Metal on plastic is bad...
Also, be glad DVDs don't suffer this vulnerability: CDs (and GDRoms) have a simple lacker layer plus label over the reflective layer, but DVDs have the metal sandwiched between 2 equally thick polycarbonate discs. (hence double sided DVDs)
I say download the game and burn it rather than buying another copy... (only downside is if you have a rare model with copy protection)

Just wanted to poke my head in and point out that this thread title reads like a headline from the Weekly World News.

This was a sticker unlike anything I've seen. It was actually pretty much embedded in top the painted disc label at its edges. In the center of this sticker was a raised area that covered a magnetic metal strip. I was able to remove the metal strip, but the remainder of the embedded sticker remained. As I said earlier, I always remove these from game/movie discs because of the tendency to play off-balance and do damage to the system spindle bearing.
The way this "sticker" was embedded at the edges, Blockbuster obviously did not want the average person removing it. I do not even know if a heat gun would have worked.
