My gf is studying in syberia and went to visit her last month. And much to my suprise SEGA seems hughely popular over there. At least bootlegged mega drives
at this site you can see all the models they had on sale. including white MEGA Drive 3.
www.newgame.ru
I bought castlevania ,sunset riders and Alien Soldier bootlegs. This is what rekindled my interest in the MD.
There were also three very odd games:
Final Fantasy
Super Mario 3
Iraq War 2003
last but not least
Duke Nukem 3D
What I want to ask is should she pick them up or are they not worth it. I'd like to remind you that I am a gamer and not a collector

That is really an interesting site. But I can't find Final Fantasy. And I don't understand why they call their PS One-rip off a 16-bitter. :P

Identifying bootlegs could make for an interesting article maybe. I may have bought bootleg DVD's and burned a few Dreamcast and Playstation games in my day but I'll stick with official Genesis stuff because I like collecting it. If I want bootleg Genesis games I'll just download the roms for free.
Interesting site though. Some of the knock off systems are hilarious looking.

I'd snap up that FF.

Yes, I think the Duke Nukem 3D is a legit release by TecToy but it's very, very crappy. I've played most Genesis fake pirate games but I've never seen Final Fantasy, I'll have to look that one up.
Most of those games are really mediocre hacks though, I don't recommend actually buying them.

final fantasy/barver battle saga seems like a great game from what I've played on roms (russian and chinese). It's an rpg so I haven't gotten very far, but I'd buy it.

I think that one that looks like a psone is really a genesis. I once saw a nes bootleg that looked like a ps1 and when the cd drive opened their was a cartridge slot.

I agree. It would be awesome if you could put something together about your trip over there. Nothing technical, just the game-related places you went and the Genny bootlegs you saw. That'd be a cool read.

Yes.
Duke Nukem 3D is released in Brazil by Tec Toy in 1996.
I´m Brazilian and i saw this game.
I played this game in emulator and i didn´t like this game.
The Mega Drive version is worst than PC Version.
- Other games released by Tec Toy:
In 1994, Tec Toy released the modificated version of Wonder Boy IV Monster World named Turma da Mônica na Terra dos Monstros ( Monica´s Gang in the Land of Monsters ).
Mônica is a Brazilian Comic Book character very popular in my country.
Other Wonder Boy games for Master System was edited to Monica games.
Tec Toy are translated the games Phantasy Star II in 1996 and Phantasy Star III - Generations of Doom in 1998 to Portuguese.
In PS 2 the company was changed the monsters names and translated the name of the bosses to Portuguese.
In PS 3 the company was change the monsters names. Same in PS 2.
But PS 3 is marked for the error translates and bugs.
Yu Yu Hakusho Sunset Fighters was released by Tec Toy in my country and translated to Portuguese in 1999 because the sucess of the anime Yu Yu Hakusho in my country, was released in 1997 and showed in TV Manchete.
The original manga was released in my country in 2002 by Editora JBC - Japan Brazil Comunication.
In Tec Toy´s translation several characters are changed his names.
Yusuke is renamed Urai and Kuwabara are renamed Kuwaha.
In the anime, Yusuke and Kuwabara remains his original names.
The unique character was name changed is Shizuru Kuwabara; Kuwabara´s sister. In Brazil she is renamed Shizuka in anime. In the manga was published in Brazil, the character is named with her original name: Shizuru.
Oyher games translated to Portuguese:
- Where in time is Carmem Sandiego?
- Shinning in the Darkness
The Mega Drive is still manufactured in my country by Tec Toy.
The current model is built in 71 games.
Actually I thought Duke Nukem was pretty imppressive, definitely plays alot better than Zero Tolerance. But yeah the graphics do look poor on an emulator but look a hell of alot better if you play in TV mode because the colours blend in.

The Final Fantasy game you speak of was developed in Taiwan. Later, it was translated into Russian, most likely unofficially. Of course, the game uses graphics and audio "borrowed" from other games, so there's not really anything official about it.
Most newer games you see there, including Iraq War 2003 are being developed by a small company in China. This is in hopes to give these Russian bootleg systems some new games for their customers.
All of the systems you see on NewGame.ru are Genesis clones, including the one that looks like a PS One. Their goal is to copy the design of popular newer machines to get kids excited by a familiar design. Or, perhaps, to trick the parents into thinking they are buying a PlayStation when really they are buying a Megadrive. Who knows for certain?

They don't sell outside of Russia, but I know someone there who got me some which arrived the other day as you can see on my site: http://goldenagegaming.com/megadrive/home.html
The only problem is they don;t fit my damn console as the carts are even wider than Japanese carts. Also, the cases are only a little bigger than the carts just for anyone who is interested.

Since there has been alot of discussion lately about the Chinese game "Shui Hu Feng Yun Zhuan", I was wondering whether any good unlicenced games actually came out from good old Russia! The Russians, like the Chinese, are quite talented with respect to programming and I can't help but wonder if there is a hidden gem that was produced exlusively for the masses in Russia. Anyone know?

I have several dozen copies of Death Caliber on their way for those interested.
It, along with a few other games (like the above mentioned Final Fantasy, Sonic Shuffle, etc) are in Russian but are actually developed by Taiwanese or HK based groups. Other than the later Mario hacks, most of the Russian-developed stuff is licensed properties shoehorned into older games (Shrek, Gran Turismo, etc).

Gameplay looks absolutely craptacular, but the music sounds really good. Why do they even bother to produce new Genesis games to sell in these markets? Is there demand for this kind of stuff at all?
And the same guy also has this video up:

Also, there's another Russian pirate title that surfaced recently, Ben 10:
AaLRsbOzP9I
Appears to be a brawler... How good it is, I don't know. I'd guess not very, but still kinda interesting since it seems to be built using mostly original materials. More info here: http://s4.zetaboards.com/PGC_Forums/topic/9503450/1/#new

Pfft. The same guys? Of course, because Russia is such a small place. ;)
I have those Mario games and the Ben10 game. Mario games both crash (or at least mine do, in the Sega Nomad) whenever I hit a block after picking up a mushroom, or fall in a hole. Crap physics = you will fall into holes, a lot - hence I haven't progressed much in either. The Ben10 game is really short and easy to get through, but one of the tracks that plays in the game is a version of Blue Monday, which redeems it somewhat :) They all have some really nice music, I'm not sure whether it's original or lifted from somewhere.

OK, all you people that say you've had these games already, how come you never posted a topic and said anything until now when someone else has? I'd think it's something we'd all want to know :x If you guys have anything else unknown that's rare, I hope you let us know instead of never saying anything until 10 years later where some guy posts inside of a very old topic again. I mean, WTF.
Reminds me of how Tiny Toon Adventures 3 was unknown forever because even people that owned it never bothered mentioning it.
Anyway.. :) These games lack the pirate quality charm that titles from Taiwanese developers had from the 90's and early 2000's. Makes me wonder what else they made though. I'd like to see pics of te actual item if anyone can find them!

How do I know what's "unknown" or "rare"? These were unknown to me before I found the games for sale, then they became known to me. That's all I know ;P Wasn't even aware they'd not been dumped until this thread. I might've posted sooner but for all I knew they'd been around Russia for ages, and it gets boring to see lots of "OMG Look at this thing I found" posts that turn out to be old news. Not many Sega-16 people seem interested in such things, anyway.
I'll take a photo of all my Russian games when I can get hold of a decent camera again.

Nice one! A few annoying questions: Will they be boxed or loose? Are these the larger Russian carts that don't fit properly without widening the cartslot? And will they boot on a US Model 2 at all, or strictly on the Model 1 without TMSS (and/or Model 2 with JPN region setting as you described with another game, at least I think it was another game)?

after checking his current listing he no longer has any of the repros available, but check his completed items and recently he's had the stone protectors, super mario bros + battle city, harry potter etc. repro's selling but currently has none up for auction,
the actual physical part of the package is quite good quality, id go as far to say that the finished physical product looks and feels better than all of my SFT releases

Nice one! A few annoying questions: Will they be boxed or loose?
Loose cartridges, Japanese-style case. It doesn't have the TMSS check implemented so you'd need either:
Older non-TMSS system
Clone system
Japanese system (or region switch)
or a Game Genie
Game Genie will work to let it play on regular US model 1/2 systems, just like it works for older Accolade titles.
Nothing much to do today, so I finally got round to sorting out some photos of (most of) my collection of Russian games.
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii254/aasv0gel/russiangames.png
Quality of these things varies a lot. I ended up with two boxed Death Calibers (the old one never ran correctly on anything :P) and two LOTRs - one of them didn't work, the seller wanted rid of both so just threw them both in! (That same seller substituted OOS games for Super Off Road, Sylvester and Tweety and Zero Tolerance, hence me ending up with those. Annoying, but that's the way it goes - most of the order was fine.) NBA Live 2000 is Fifa 98 (boo) and Pokemon Crazy Drummer just doesn't work. Nice box art though.
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii254/aasv0gel/th_deathcaliberold.jpg (http://s266.photobucket.com/albums/ii254/aasv0gel/?action=view¤t=deathcaliberold.jpg) http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii254/aasv0gel/th_deathcalibernew.jpg (http://s266.photobucket.com/albums/ii254/aasv0gel/?action=view¤t=deathcalibernew.jpg)
Older Death Caliber vs newer. Quality of the newer one is much better - nicer boxart, sturdier case, and most importantly the cartridge doesn't feel like it's going to fall to pieces every time I handle it.
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii254/aasv0gel/th_4carts.jpg (http://s266.photobucket.com/albums/ii254/aasv0gel/?action=view¤t=4carts.jpg) http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii254/aasv0gel/th_4cartsback.jpg (http://s266.photobucket.com/albums/ii254/aasv0gel/?action=view¤t=4cartsback.jpg)
Selection of different cart casings. I always thought the fake Sega / 16-bit logos and screws on the bottom two were great :P These are the 'tacky'est kind, top two are far better (although to make up for it, they don't fit correctly into normal MD cart slots. I always just use one of those plain adapters anyway.)
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii254/aasv0gel/th_mario4.jpg (http://s266.photobucket.com/albums/ii254/aasv0gel/?action=view¤t=mario4.jpg) http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii254/aasv0gel/th_Mario4hangtab.jpg (http://s266.photobucket.com/albums/ii254/aasv0gel/?action=view¤t=Mario4hangtab.jpg)
"Mario 4". Nice box art and good quality case. It even has a hangtab & one of those extra plastic "lips" to tuck the hangtab up neatly underneath. The game itself is tricky due to it being broken - bad controls, and irritating crashes - the music dies when you collect mushrooms and hit destroyable blocks, and the whole game will crash entirely when you fall through the floor / go down a pipe. This happens every single time on the Sega Nomad / PAL MDs, but a lot less on clones (like this one (http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showthread.php?4367-Official-Sega-16-Haul-Thread-4-0&p=491475&viewfull=1#post491475)). Which suggests to me that if the programmer(s?) tested it much, they didn't have any original hardware. Maybe not surprising considering how many different clones seem to be sold in Russia!
