Hey,

After being sourly disappointed with Final Fantasy XIII (I can't believe that it was even called Final Fantasy that game is crap), I did a web search for the list of the top RPGs of all time.

Long story short I saw the Phantasy Star series on ever RPG list and I've never really heard of them. Honestly I have always been a Sony/Nintendo/Atari guy, with no real loyalty to anything specific, just that is what I have owned, I have never owed a Sega console.

I decided to give Phantasy Star a try seeing as I wanted to play a good RPG and Final Fantasy XIII failed miserably to deliver. Long story short I has so impressed with Phantasy Star that I have the following coming and it should be here before the weekend:

Sega Genesis Model-1
Sega Power Base Converter (To play Sega Master System Games)
Sega Genesis CD system for the Model-1
Phantasy Star Complete for SMS
Phantasy Star II Complete
Phantasy Star III Complete

I was hoping ya'll could point me to some other good RPGs for the genesis/cd. I don't have the 32x adapter but if anyone knows a good RPG for the 32x I'll get the 32x adapter to play it.

Thanks

all four phantasy star games are on the sonic ultimate collection. it is available for the ps3 for 15 bucks on amazon. if you only want to play the phantasy star games, this is the way to go. (plus you get the 2 shining force games).

Phantasy Star IV is my personal favorite, although the first and the second game in the series are of the same quality.

Other fantastic RPGs on MD/G:

Shining Force I + II + CD
Wonderboy in Monsterworld + Monsterworld IV (this one is only really playable via fan translation)
Beggar Prince (Chinese RPG)
Lunar: Eternal Blue + Silver Star (both on CD)
Popful Mail (CD)
Warsong (Langrisser) + Langrisser II (fan translation)

If you invest in a NeoMyth 3-in-1, you can also play the Phantasy Star I retranslation with FM sound!

Well definitely play Phantasy Star IV. It's the only game of the series I've played, but it's generally considered the very best of the entire series. This game is amazing.

If you'd care for a very different action-RPG, try The Immortal, a nice dark dungeon explorer. It's a port of an old computer game; the graphics can be a little muddy but they're very detailed. Sections of text move along the storyline, w/ great mood-setting music, plus bloody fatalities. It's very hard so you'll die often while exploring the Labyrinth of Eternity!

You could also look for the Ys games for Master System.

I saw that, but I like to play games on the original systems, granted Phantasy Star is going to be played through the Power Base Adapter, but I'm still playing it from the original cartridge, its just not the same if you do it other wise.

I'm actually in a pool on AtariAge to get the Everdrive for the genesis, and plan on replaying several on the Phantasy Stars and other games that have the true translation from Japanese to English.

In that line, Crusader of Centy is a good pick too and Beyond Oasis.

Light Crusader may not be exactly an RPG, but it has a quite RPG-ish
feel, because of the medieval setting and because it is story driven, has
dungeons etc. It's basically an action-adventure, but I would still
recommend it, seeing how many real RPGs for the Mega Drive have
already been contributed.

Shadowrun.

Both shining force games are awesome. Get a sega cd for both lunar games, as well as for popful mail and vay. Those games are worth the price of the sega cd by themselves. The original CDs can be expensive, but fortunately there's other methods of playing sega cd games on sega cd hardware (yar matey). But if you come across the originals cheap in a pawn shop or something, snag em!

Great! but it won't allow FM sound (http://www.smspower.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=8714) in Master System games. That is not a huge loss with games like Golden Axe Warrior (a Zelda clone) which never supported FM in the first place, but it sure is with the Phantasy Star retranslation, which allows you to play the game with FM for the first time (the original US/EU variants do not feature FM support).

Other great Master System RPGs, all with FM:

Golvellius - Valley of Doom
Wonderboy in Monster Land
Dragon's Trap
Ys

And some other Mega Drive games that might be of interest:

Ys III: Wanderers from Ys (http://www.sega-16.com/feature_page.php?id=427)
Exile
Traysia
Vay (SCD)
Dark Wizard (SCD)
Dungeon Explorer (SCD)

Here's a complete list of what I would recommend, including most of the games that others mentioned:

Genesis

Phantasy Star II
Phantasy Star IV
Shining Force
Shining Force II
Wonderboy in Monsterworld
Beggar Prince
Exile
Traysia
Sorcerer's Kingdom
Warsong (Langrisser)
Crusader of Centy (Soleil)
Beyond Oasis (Story of Thor)
Light Crusader
Landstalker
Ys III: Wanderers from Ys
Sword of Vermilion
Shining in the Darkness
Master of Monsters

Japanese Mega Drive (playable via fan translations)

Monsterworld IV
Langrisser II
King Colossus

Sega CD

Shining Force CD
Lunar: Eternal Blue
Lunar: Silver Star Story
Popful Mail
Vay
Dungeon Explorer
Dark Wizard

Master System

Golden Axe Warrior
Golvellius - Valley of Doom
Phantasy Star (retranslation)
Wonderboy in Monster Land
Dragon's Trap
Ys (FM hack)

OK so what is the BEST way to play these SMS games, and to get all FM sound? I need to play the original Phantasy Star at some point.

I saw ur link for the adapter, to play non-JAP games on a JAP SMS and so get FM sound. How else can I play SMS games w/ full sound? I have a Genesis and Game Gear...

^ The best way might be a Japanese SMS with gender adapter and flash cart, but for Genesis / Mega Drive it'd be the NeoMyth 3-in-1 (http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8165) which is a flash cart with the 2413 built-in! It's AWESOME!

TmEE also invented a way of soldering the SMS FM-chip inside Mega Drive 2.
That way you could just use the Power Base converter and still get full FM sound
with Master System games.
