Hihi,
I'm knew to the saturn console and I was wondering if a gamecube version of gems (sonic R) is better than the original saturn version. I just don't wanna waste moneys and plus I don't like gamecube as much as saturn :) . (nor do I have sonic gems) And since emulation and all... (is it emulation?)

other than that... what are the best games for saturn?
I got a list:

sonic Jam (love the classics)
The Lost World: Jurrassic Park (looove JP)
X men Children of the Atom
Satun Bomberman
Hyper 3-D pinball (pinball :p , any good?)
Golden Axe: Duel (like golden axe... but is it hunkey dorey?)
X men vs. Street Fighter

any others? and if so... peas (:) ) describe what it's like por favor.
meow! (thanks!)

From what I've heard, the version of Sonic R in the Gems Collection is the PC one, which is better than the Saturn original. Supposedly, it has better lighting effects and the time of day changes.

You need:

- Shining Force III
- All 3 Panzer Dragoon games
- Burning Rangers
- Nights
- Guardian Heroes
- Astal
- Sega Rally
- Galactic Attack
- Darius Gaiden

All but SF III, Panzer 3, Guardian Heroes, and Burning Rangers are pretty inexpensive. Stay away from imports unless you've got money to burn. There are some incredible games, but they cost an arm and a leg.

Sonic R in Gems has a better draw distance, but the texturing isn't as good and the transparencies are all opaque. Also, the real reason to get the PC version, online play, is conspicuously absent.

There's a lot of great stuff for the Saturn. I cannot however stress how important it is to have Shining Force 3 and Shining the Holy Ark. I simply cannot. Therefore I leave it to you to get them or face my wrath!

Mystaria/Blazing Heroes
Iron Storm
Guardian Heroes
Clockwork Knigh 1 and 2
Bug and Bug Too
Dark Savior
Legend of Oasis/Story of Thor
Fighters Megamix
Street Fighter Alpha 2
Albert Odessy
Blazing Dragons
Dragon Force
The Horde
Resident Evil
Three Dirty Dwarves
Magical Knight Rayearth
Mass Destruction
Norse by Norsewest
Christmast Nights
Shining Wisdom
Virtua Cop 1&2

Is virtua cop one of those shooters at the arcade places?
and (I feel stupid for asking this) what's Shining Force/holy ark thing, I know it's an RPG, but what's it about?

anyway... the new ones I'll add to my list are:
bug/bug too, galactic attack, sega rally

maybe:
virtua cop/2
clockwork thingymababer
Nights
Panzar Dragon Saga
Shining force 3 (maybe considering price and stuff...)/holy ark

edit: I might reconsider shining force 3 cause of the link on here...

Shining Force 3 is god! It is a tactical RPG that was IMO the true RPG of 32-bit era and can own the ass out of FF7 any day. It starts in a floating city with 2 nations in the middle of a peace conference while mysterious forces set to work... I don't want to explain it too much or it won't be nearly as much fun for you.

Shining the Holy Ark is the direct prequel to it.

hmm... sounds tempting, I'll do the link thing and get it once I get/beat shining ark thing and... yah.

anyway... I found something cool:
http://www.videogamecritic.net/index.htm
:p I'll use that and add to my list more are:
Sega Ages
shinobi legends

P.S this list will be what I (hope) to get by... a long time so don''t think I'm rich :)

Collecting for the Saturn requires patience anyway. And a word of warning about SF3: There are 3 Scenario's for it each one an entire game in it's own right, although they do overlap and use a synchronicity system so you really miss out if you don't play all 3 of them. Unforutnately the 2nd and 3rd Scenario's never came over from Japan. There are translated scripts though, and there's some patching in the works for them.

Also the end to the English version of Scenario 1 is highly misleading. It was majorly altered by Sega in an attempt to cover up the fact that they weren't releasing more games. Just thought you needed to know all that.

Shining the Holy Ark is an actual RPG and as a result is somewhat playable. Shining Force 3 is one of those "move two steps on a grid and hope it works out" games that doesn't appeal to me but may to you. It is nothing like Shining the Holy Ark or In the Darkness.

Except for the fact that you never only "Move two steps" in Shining Force 3. There are some battles that you have be cautious on, but you're exaggerating greatly. Probably because you just don't like the genre.

Shining the Holy Ark is a dungeon crawler, but not technically a true RPG. Mostly because you don't exactly have a world to explore in the traditional sense of the word.

If you can pick up Heir of Zendor cheap that'd be another good one to add to your list.

True enough... I guess NONE of the Shining games are true RPGs. But Shining Force does use the grid thingy. I just can't imagine real armies/combatants being restricted to grids. Suspension of disbelief is a bit too much.

Demonic Weasel

That's why there are other entries into the series so that everyone can try to have some fun with it. Although I've never understood why people don't like the grid style myself.

Can you imagine a game of chess?

My little brain can only handle checkers.

I was able to get into Powers Kingdom/Guardian War on the 3DO, but the game just didn't give me enough incentive to continue.

Is there any games in which require the 3D ugly pad for the saturn?
and I really hate grids too :) . so SH3 is... meowish?

edit: could I possibly use
http://store.yahoo.com/midwestgames/playps22tose.html

that as a 3D pad (or some other controller)

The Saturn 3D pad is bliss. It's not ugly, it's the most beautiful control method ever devised.

I can't think of any games that require it, but a lot of games use it, and it's almost always better with the 3D pad. And NiGHTS sucks without it.

That PS2 adapter doesn't seem to support Saturn analog. Instead, you use the PS2 analog in place of the Saturn digital. Bleh. For the life of me I can't imagine why someone would want to replace the Godly Saturn controller with a PlayStation one. That'd be like swapping out your Genesis with the Gizmondo. OK bad analogy, but the Sega Saturn controllers are amongst the best ever made anywhere.

The one fact that you're all ignoring about SF3 is that it does not use a grid in the traditional sense. You're actually traveling over terrain in this one rather than just moving on a grid. So there.

I'm gonna have to pop in my copy because I barely remember. I do remember that the graphics are quite sharp.

so are you saying the 3D pad (which I think the shape is ugly still :) ) is better than the other 2?

Otherwise I'm v.2 controller all the way untill I need that 3D pad...

I think you should get both a 3D pad and a v.2 digital pad.

The Saturn analog pad is about 7.12 times better looking than the Dreamcast pad.

The only reason I sorta disagree is because I don't like circley pads...

But I do agree with you on one thing-It looks comfy (with the L and R buttons in the back and being held like a gamecube controller.

The Saturn 3D knob thing doesn't feel like an actual analogue control to me - rather, it feels more like a 3D D-Pad. For example, I can't play Daytona USA CE with the 3D pad as there seem to be three analogue ranges: neutral, middling, SWERVE. In games with only 3D movement (not 'analogue' in the sense the further you press, the faster you go or whatever) it's great. Like NiGHTS.

I think the Dreamcast controller's stick did it best - with the spring in the bottom, you are actually pushing against something, it makes finicky movements that much easier.
