I recently hooked up my Sega Saturn and apparently it cannot save games. What may be the problem? (All internal RAM is free and I don't have a card.) Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

You'll need to change the lithium battery which is inside the li'l door in the back of the unit. Take the battery out and buy the same thing down at Target or something. Put the new one in, press the li'l reset button and you'll be able to save and save and save for another year or two.

wait... once the battery dies, does your old memory get deleted?

Yep, you lose it all. I suggest finding a back up RAM cartridge. You'll never fill it up, and all your saves will be safe.

I filled it up. I have TWO! But that's because I never deleted anything, not even rentals. And I rented or bought everything! They sometimes give me funky behavior, though.

Its possible to change the battery while your saturn is running, so you wont loose your data.

I suppose you can, but why would you change it when it's not dead?

When you dont have a Backup Ram it would be a good idea to change the battery every year, before it gets empty and you will loose all data.

but in time, (many years) a RAM cart would be cheaper.
well... by like $1, but that's not the main point

Isn't it sooo much easier to leave your RAM cart in there forever than going online (or wherever), buying a battery, and replacing it every year?
And if you somehow forget to change it but the battery dies, your memory is dead... :( . That would mean a long time of memory getting deleted  .

By Buying one RAM cart (or 2 in Joe's case), all that would be prevented:) .

You can get a battery at Radio Shack, Target, Wal*Mart and maybe even your grocery store. There are a couple dozen or so games that cannot save to the RAM cart and must save directly to the system.

Virtua Fighter, any game that uses a cart like X-Men vs Street Fighter, a few others, I can't really remember right now.

Be sure to get the Sega RAM cart. Do not get any 3rd party carts. They cannot save directly to the cart, plus they suck ass.

Ive had my battery in my saturn for a few years now, its a cheap $1 battery from a dollar store. In Dreamcast VMU's they die in a day when playing the sonic VMU games but in the saturn they last a while. I should back up all my mem into a ram cart. I generally keep everything I am not playing in the ram and the games I am playing in the saturn and transfer back and forth. Its a pain transfering back in forth though making sure my old saves are deleted etc.

There are some mods for a rechargeable battery or using other batteries such a 2AA's or something on the net if you are interested.

I bought a sealed Saturn in 2001, unlocked every damn thing in Fighters Megamix, so I thought the battery was still good, and then two years after that it died on me. With that little 500 or so blocked I saved a ton of games, etc.

Then last year I got a loose Sega brand backup cart for three dollars and never looked back. I wish I could get a couple more for that much, despite the fact I might only need one -- I worry about hardware crapping out on me too much at times.
