We have a (very) brief interview (http://www.sega-16.com/forum/../Interview-%20Boris%20Vallejo.htm) with Boris Vallejo, illustrator of several Genesis covers, including Golden Axe 2, Phantasy Star IV, Star Control, and the Ecco the Dolphin series. It's a short read, but worth looking into.

His covers were generally alright. Phantasy Star IV was a mess though -- well-drawn I suppose, but totally wrong. It makes it look like some ultra-realistic sci-fi cyberpunk game or something.

Question missing from the interview:

Sega-16: What's up with the dude on the Golden Axe II cover? He's holding out his sword and looking at it, possibly thinking something like "Why is the blade so damned short?"

Yeah, the PSIV cover is totally wrong. Chaz has a shield (he should be two-handed with the sword) and a jockstrap. Rika looks like a Star Trek character and Hahn is just lost with his look. Btw, you never fight with only those three characters. The Jap cover is a lot better.

Boris didn't seem to like to be interviewed if you ask me. His answers were too short and not inspiring.

He said he didn't have a lot to say on the matter, which left me wondering why he agreed to be interviewed in the first place. :(

Phantasy Star IV was a manga-style game, and thatīs exactly what the US-cover did wrong: it tries to be too realistic. Like so often with western covers of japanese games the artwork looks like from a cheap fantasy-novel, hell, Chaz kinda looks like an old He-Man action-figure.
Thankfully nowadays that animes are so popular in the west too the companies stick with manga artwork on the covers.

@Ary
I definately could do it better, in fact Iīm quite skilled as a comic-artist.

Cool idea, Comix Zone 2, but I guess we would be missing a real programmer or two...
Iīll see that I can get some artwork on Sega-16 once a fan art section has opened, but unfortunately I donīt have a scanner yet. I didnīt even have a PC until a year ago...
