View Full Version : Now my Sega Experience is Complete! Just picked up a 32x

Just won a Mega 32x on eBay. :) I decided to go for it because I had a healthy financial situation and I could afford to treat myself a little, so I bought a reasonably priced 32x.
It comes complete with all the leads - Actually it has the leads for both a Model 1 AND a model 2. (I'll be using the model 2 lead. It also comes with Doom and Virtua Racing.
Now, I know the library for the 32x is stupidly small, so this'll be an easy question: Barring Star Wars Arcade, Afterburner And Knuckles Chaotix (Which is hard enough to get over here as it is) what else does anyone recommend I buy? :D
- Space Harrier
- Tempo
- MK II
- Blackthorne
- Shadow Squadron
- Kolibri

I can't recommend Tempo or Blackthorne, but I'd heartily give you the thumbs-up for Virtua Fighter. (Even Zaxxon!)

All good ideas. I was thinking of getting Virtua Fighter. :)
And I have noticed we don't have a Doom Review for our review page. I am a Doom player at heart and have played it exstnsively on many systems. I could review it once I have played it enough on the 32x. :D

I know my opinion on Doom 32X, but I'd like to see someone else's. =)

Well, let's see...
So far, I have exstensively played PC Doom, Playstation Doom, GBA Doom and a little SNES Doom. I also have many different versions of all the Doom Games. I also religiously play from the Doom Collectors Edition. I also even play the Alpha and Beta versions of Doom. I also love playing through any of the original Dooms (Ultimate Doom, Doom II and BOTH episodes of Final Doom) on Ultra Violence without saving just to see how far I get. Most of the time I get quite far.
And my favourite challenge is playing level 29 of Doom II by killing myself on it and starting it with just the pistol and 50 bullets. Oh, and usually I use the clipping cheat to do that same level with just the pistol, but with the Cyberdemon at the exit already out, shooting rockets at me all the way through the level.
I like Doom.

You don't play Doom 64? You're missing out.
Kikoskia
05-26-2006, 07:16 PM
I don't have an N64. :( I don't believe in buying systems just for one game. :p
Genesis Knight
05-26-2006, 07:32 PM
I swear I'm going to kill the next person who bashes the N64. =P
Seriously, Kikoskia...it sounds like you're pretty darn qualified for this. Can ye grant me a request, though? PLEASE do not base the meat of the review on how accurate a conversion it is... I'm really tired of all the reviews that basically assume that I all care about it 'how close it is to the arcade' or 'how close it is to the original'. I just want to know if it's a good game or not, on it's own merits!
Kikoskia
05-26-2006, 08:25 PM
I swear that I will not do that. I will base the review on a number of things.
1) Is it playable? If so, why? If not, why not?
2) Is it enjoyable? If so, why? If not, why not?
3) How nice does it handle/look/play?
4) Is the sound and music good?
5) What sort of options are given to give variety and replayability?
I talk about if a game is GOOD. The two other reviews I have done talked much more about if the game was good then 'if it was a good port from console x' or 'did they leave y out of it'?
You can count on me to tell you if it's GOOD or not. :)

My biggest problem with 32X Doom was that everyone, even Sega and ID hyped the game up to be just as good as the PC version. Guess not. :(
There is a Doom64TC for the PC, that's pretty good and is like a direct port, sans a level or two.

My 32X experence is almost complete, I'm just mission Zaxxon, and I'll be done with the 32X.

I am sort of interested in picking up Kolibri, but other than that, my 32X is done, too.

Never got a saturn. I might get around to it when I have more money. :)

If you buy Saturn Doom, get the Japanese version. It is better than the PAL/US version. FACT.

Saturn Doom kinda sucks.
The Jaguar version is awesome, though.

That'd be sweet. :)
My personal favorite is the Playstation Doom. It has both 1 and 2 and some awesome gameplay and ambience.

I still need:
Afterburner
Kolibri
Virtua Fighter
and perhaps Shadow squadron

Shadow Squadron is surprisingly good. Definitely better than Star Wars Arcade (which is still worth $2 or $3).
I still need Tempo (I had a Ford Tempo and I HATED it... crappiest car ever) and maybe I'll take Zaxxon Motherbase and whatever else I don't have.

Uh? Explain how.
And besides, I always thought the PSX version of Doom was identical to the Saturn version: both Doom 1 & 2, 'ambient' soundtrack as opposed to the PC's metal soundtrack (pity).
David J.

The Japanese version is optmized and has a faster (playable) framerate.

So then PSX and Saturn versions of just plain Doom are kind of irrelevant, aren't they? You could just get Ultimate.
David J.
05-29-2006, 12:42 AM
I don't follow. There is no "Ulitmate Doom" for the PSX. I can tell you that the PSX and Saturn versions of Doom contain Ulitmate Doom (which is just plain doom with a new episode) and Doom 2.

He's thinking "FINAL DOOM"
Kikoskia

No, Ultimate Doom and Final Doom are different.
Ultimate Doom was the original Doom with an extra chapter, Thy Flesh Consumed.
Final Doom was two totally new Doom games, each 32 levels long, both based after Doom II. They were Eviluation and The Plutonia Experiment.

Was it an automatic? That MIGHT explain it. If it had the 3.0 V6, it couldn't have been that bad.
Joe Redifer

Yes it was an automatic. I drive nothing but manuals now.

jDoom rocks, I play it quite a bit now.
It's hard to imagine that Sega was probably working on 32X Doom and Saturn Doom simultaneously.

Why would anybody want to play Saturn Doom? Legend has it that it's one of the saddest ports ever, possibly the worst due to the expectations that come with the hardware it was running on.

Doom for PSX was a great piece of software. The soundtrack alone elevated it above all other ports, and even gave it an advantage over the PC version(s) at the time.
The first time Doom sounded frightening.

I heard the Japanese Saturn version is just as good as the PSX one, if not better. I read about the USA and European versions slowing down the second an enemy would pop up on screen. The Japanese one fixed up all the mistakes and had that ambient soundtrack as well...

There's videos to prove how fast it is on youtube. Type Saturn doom or something.
