Shadow Dancer is great game. I always though having your dog attack enemies for you was cool. Shinobi III is still my favorite game in the series though.

Shadow Dancer is still among the top 20% of the Genesis library. I recall being floored when I first saw the character scream while doing the magic; it was so arcade-like. Plus the music was jammin. I was also floored when I first heard those subtle lyrics during the bonus rounds...

However Revenge and Shinobi 3 still I prefer. How would you guys rate the 3 shinobi titles?

How odd is it that Sega translated the arcade game to Master System but didn't to Genesis? In retrospect I'm happy with there being multiple versions, as the Genesis game is pretty kickass (though too short).

I remember when Shadow Dancer was released,
I had high hopes for it since I loved Revenge of
Shinobi and the whole dog thing reminded me of
Snake Eyes.

While it's a good game, I too feel that Shinobi III
delivered better in the sequel department.

I still love the music and level design of the first one.

I used to be able to beat this on hardest difficulty with out shurikens, I did use the dog, and occasionally magic. I'd have to play this every day to get to that level of badassery again, though.

the movies that samudra linked where awesome,so was ben shinobi so is Shinobi,it scertainly disserves a spot in the game top 100.Yuzo putted some to awesome music in the game(shinobi 1),even spidey is involved in that game,Thats why marvel s involved with that game.just way awesome.the only ninja game i ever finished with loosing 2 lives and on very hard was sengoku 3 sore there was no en in that game.master stuff shinobi,made the genesis rule.

I love Genesis Shadow Dancer. The arcade version is quite lackluster. The arcade music is AWFUL and the graphics aren't so hot, either. I'm glad they changed it. The Statue of Liberty elevator music rocks. The box art to this game is HORRIBLE! It is almost worth owning the Japanese version simply for the (much) better box art and for no other reason. I don't see why money was spent commisioning new, often horrible box art when the box art in Japan was readily available and quite awesome. I demand an explanation for this!

I wouldn't be comfortable comparing the three like that since SD is more like the arcade original.

S3>RoS for me. RoS is too much trial & error and I hate the last level. Also, in 3 you're actually agile and flexible like a ninja should be so you don't feel inhibited (is this the right word? I mean you feel clumsy and constrained) when there's a lot going on around you.

I always though it was in this order, IMO:

Revenge of Shinobi
Shinobi 3
Shadow Dancer

RoS, IMO is one of the best ninja games of all time. The game was much more ambitious that Shinobi 3, and the game was so satisfying when ever you beated a level and/or the boss that followed. The movie refrences had a nice charm, and the game was amazing at the time.

Shinobi 3 is a great game, but while Shinobi moves with much more finesse the skill and learning curve is pretty much gone, which made Revenge of Shinobi so much better.

Shadow Dancer is a fun game too, but way too arcadey for my tastes. Seems like a knock off of Revenge of Shinobi.

Shadow Dancer a knock-off of Revenge of Shinobi? Not quite. Shadow Dancer is based more on the original arcade game Shinobi which Revenge most decidedly was not. In fact Revenge had next to nothing to do with the original Shinobi. Shadow Dancer was the first time we got true Shinobi game play at home (the Master System version doesn't count). It is a fantastic game and I play it often. For me, it is:

Shadow Dancer (Genesis)
Revenge of Shinobi (first run with Godzilla, etc)
Shinobi (arcade)
Shinobi III
Shinobi (Master System)
Shinobi (PC Engine)
Shinobi Legions (Saturn)
Shinobi (NES)
Shinobi (Game Gear versions)
Shadow Dancer (arcade.. ug!)

This is a good game.
In my opinion this Genesis / Mega Drive is better them Arcade version.

I don´t defeat the last boss today.

In Brazil, my country, Tec Toy, the Sega´s representant in the country release a Mega Drive with 71 games built in.

Shadow Dancer is one this games in the memory of console.

I also play with no shurikens in Shadow Dancer. It makes sense since many of the later enemies can easily deflect them so might as well learn to fight close combat. I usually love going in practice mode and select some of the last levels on the hardest difficulty settings. Black ninjas rule!

As for which Shinobi is the best (On Genesis), Shinobi 3 is the total package and fairly diversed so it is #1. Shadow Dancer is a bit short, but all action so it's number 2. Revenge of Shinobi is what I call overrated. It's much too slow and stiff and doesn't age well for that reason alone (never mind graphics).

Shadow Dancer is a cool game. I like that dog which sniffs behind the enemy's because there smell is too bad. Only Shinobi III is the best, nice animations!

If I'm being honest (and I see no reason why I shouldn't be) I found Shadow Dancer quite tedious. Being followed around by a big white dog was pretty awesome though.

This is a really good Genesis game. One of the many that I missed out on when I was a kid. Love sending your dog to attack your enemies but one thing that always nagged me was the one-hit kills. Since it only took one hit to kill me, I knew I'd have to memorize the level, know where enemies where and what type they were. Even so, this is a sweet title for the system. Looks nice, too.

So, after playing all three Mega Drive-Shinobis in the last few weeks I must say they are all some of the greatest 16-Bit-games. I like Revenge of Shinobi best, Shadow Dancer is no.2 for me followed closely by Shinobi III. Every one of the games has it´s advantages.

ROS has the coolest and most "realistic" Ninja-atmosphere, great level-design and a nice graphic-style and sound. Especially ROS´ Joe Musashi-sprite looks better than in both sequels.

Shadow Dancer has a cool apocalyptic atmosphere and is faster and more comic-like, the dog-feature is cool too (although his barking goes on my nerves), but the one hit=one life-thing annoys me a bit.

Shinobi III has the best moves,and a quick gameplay but it kind of lacks in the atmosphere, the style and the sound-department compared to the other two.

It is funner without shurikens. I almost think its harder with shurikens when you get into the ninjas that flip across the screen.

Shinobi III is okay, but the worst MD-Shinobi. It lacks style.
ROS was state of the art by the time of it´s release, while Shinobi III was nothing special in 1993 anymore. It has the possibility to run, but that´s it´s only advantage to ROS.

Lacks style? You can't seriously say that being able to run, jump, dropkick, dropkick again, run and slash, block, and shuriken spread in one gorgeous combination isn't stylish.

As for advantages over ROS, I would consider tighter double-jump code, at-will blocking, run slashing, and wall jumping to be improvements.

I would say that Shinobi III's graphics are good for 93 as well. Lots of parallax and detail, fluid animation... Not special effects out the wazoo like Gunstar Heroes, but not sloppy by any means.

Shinobi III also sports an extremely refined set of running code - there's a sense of gravity and weight to the way Musashi runs, and his forward velocity matches his animation perfectly. There's no floating like in the other games.

Thanks for expressing in words the nagging problem I've had with Shadow Dancer. So *that's* what's been bugging me all these years...

I think S3's main advantage over RoS is that it conveys the feeling of controlling a ninja instead of some average guy that just happens to throw shurikens instead of using a gun, and who has recently started practicing some basic acrobatics.

Apart from that, I prefer most of RoS levels over S3's as they seem to have a darker theme and introduce more stuff that hadn't been seen before (I hated the labyrinth level though).
Also, the soundtrack in RoS is way better than the others. The sound quality may be a bit crummy but the tunes are very memorable.

Shinobi III stands out as a fine example of what Mega Drive games can do. It may not be as ninja as the other two but the speed, responsiveness, variety of moves and levels make for some really awesomely sexy gameplay. Revenge of Shinobi is very ninja, very dark and has some really nice action and music. I always found Shadow Dancer lacking and, I think I've mentioned it before, it seems more of a memory game at times than a reflex and follow your nose, which the other two are.

Well, I agree with you on RoS, but I can´t really find much love for Shinobi III. Graphics are more cartoonish than in RoS and the levels are lacking atmosphere. Just a weaker RoS for me.
Shadow Dancer has this apocaslyptic setting and changes the gameplay quite a bit; I´d prefer it any day from Shinobi III.

Here you can see a screenshot from the girl at the moment, she is liquidated by Joe Musashi. She must have unimaginable and indescribable pain in her elimination phase, what you can see on her killing pose, in which she is tightening and bending her left booted leg extremely strong, her head is falling behind and her hair is standing on end, so it seems, she is in a state of shock, because obviously she still cannot realize, that she is killed and the death is immediately and inevitable, because she is much too young to die and the death is coming absolutely unexpected and much too fast for her.
