Shadow Squadron, Virtua Fighter, or Afterburner probably get my vote for best game for the system.
Virtua Racing, Knuckles Chaotix, Star Wars Arcade, Doom, and Kolbri are enjoyable, too.

That's a hard question, not because I can't make up my mind about which I like best just trying to think of one I like. I would say virtua fighter but remix (yes the original is buggy and really shouldn't be used for any comparisons) runs circles around the 32X version. Maybe virtua racing, never played the saturn version, heard it controled poorly and the 32X version is ace.

Just three I think make the system worth owning:
Virtua Racing Deluxe (still the best version as far as I'm concerned)
Kolibri
Knuckles Chaotix
Good games to look into once you have the 32X:
Mortal Kombat 2 (for the time, for what still is the best of a poor fighting engine)
Blackthorne
Pitfall
Star Wars Arcade
Tempo
Web of Fire (I suppose... It must be decent enough, assuming you can find/buy it)
Metal Head (as a history artifact :) due to texture mapping)
Virtua Figher (still looks more like a port and less like the arcade than the Saturn version, despite the glitches)
Obviously

Yes, 32X Mortal Kombat 2 is probably one of the best ports of the game for what it's worth.

I got my 32x in 1997 or so for $20, and it came with Virtua Fighter. All the other games I picked up were super cheap ($4 - $10 new) so my opinions might be a little bit more favorable than most. However, here it goes.
Games that I had the most fun with:
Virtua Fighter
Kolibri
Cosmic Carnage
Mortal Kombat II
Knuckles' Chaotix
Games I didn't love, but am still glad I own:
Brutal: Above the Claw
Doom
And for the record, Tempo hurt me.

I'd say Kolibri was the clear winner! The Doom part didn't come close to the PC version, but was sure a whole lot better than the SNES version.

Well... there was the SNES version of Wolfenstein 3D with the bald Hitler and the plus signs and the soldiers who bled sweat when you shot them. Not to mention impossibly lower resolution than the original that gave you the same headace that SNES Doom gives you.

My 32X library is limited, but it goes something like this:
Space Harrier & After Burner - Great games, just like the original. It's great to finally get all the visual/audio goodness of the arcade. I wonder if the SegaCD by itself could've pulled this off tho....
Doom - I can get over the shortness of the game given cartridge space limitations. But there's no excuse for it not running full screen.
Virtua Fighter - Awesome. The arcade experience at home, and no loading screens. 'nuff said.
Virtua Racing Deluxe - See Above + Extra cars, even better!
Motocross Championship - Ugh. Awful, awful awful. Road Rash scrolled better than this. Each rider might have a whole 2 frames of animation. And the sound? It leaves a yucky 2612 film all over the inside of my mouth that makes me want to puke. But there are 256-color women on the screen..... or maybe I need to do a color count to be sure.....
Star Wars - Pretty cool. Tough, a tad repetitive but not overly annoying. I haven't played the arcade version to give it a fair or thorough comparison, but in it's own right i enjoy this game a lot. The 2-player mode is enough to keep it fresh when you get tired of getting your ass kicked by yourself.

Nope, too much color. Even if the colors were sacrificed, the ASIC chip (or whatever it's called) inside the Sega CD that is responsible for the scaling is not fast enough to pull that kind of stuff off. It's "mode 7" mode (seen in the bonus rounds of Sonic CD and a few other games) only ran at 15 frames per second as opposed to the SNES' 60fps. It was very rare to see any scaling or rotation on the Sega CD faster than 15 frames per second.

I'd say:
Doom: played on a 13 inch tv.
Star Wars: 2 player with a friend, but no ending after you beat it! It just repeats. :(
NBA Jam: I love how Nick Anderson looks like Chris Rock.
Fred Couples Golf
Tempo: just for the opening sequence.

Games I enjoyed on 32x:
Knuckles Chaotix
Virtua Racing DX
Virtua Fighter
Blackthorne
Mortal Kombat II
Space Harrier
Games I found crappy:
DOOM 32x (It's a nice distraction, but I have the collector's edition on my PC with source ports and mods, so this is pretty pointless)
Web of Fire (It looks nice graphically, but it's a mediocre game and not worth looking for on Ebay)

Who really cares about the arcade version of Virtua Fighter Remix?
It was kind of silly to bother with an arcade version, despite it was a ST-V game, and shit, wasn't Virtua Fighter 3 was just around the corner in late '96- 1997 anyway? Not to mention, Virtua Fighter 2 was still popular with many arcade goers.

Finally able to use my 32x, all sorts of cable troubles (I have a MD1). I have 12 games for it right now. Haven't played all of them yet, so I can't give my opinion on all games yet, more will follow.
Afterburner is great, so much better than the MD en Mega cd versions, this gives me the old arcade feeling from the past.
Doom is ok, a bit of a dodgy port, but it compares well with other console games of the time. Doom is still a clasic despite the shabby port.
Night Trap is great, I've always been a fan of the Mega cd Night Trap. It's great to see it with a bigger screen, more colors etc. Shame they changed the SCAT team footage though...
Space harrier is a good game, but it is a bit old for the 32x, been there done that.
Star Wars arcade is nice, good graphics, sound and ok gameplay. Could be a bit more forgiving though. (IE scrap the timer)
Toughman contest is a bit below par, gameplay is ok, but does not make use of the system at all. When I tried the game through my megadrive output I almost got a complete picture! Only the background and some effects were missing. Lazy port!
Virtua Racing is as great as always. A really tight racing game that stood the test of time well. The 2 new tracks or good, especially the desert track. A championship mode and the abillity to save would be nice tough...

That's because it pretty much IS the arcade game.

Not before the 32X you haven't. Like Afterburner, the 32X marks the first time that home players got an accurate version of the arcade game. The TurboGrafx-16 tried but it looked and sounded noticeably different. Same with the Master System, which for some reason was not able to match the arcade 100%.
That is true, I am spoiled by all the generations of hardware after that.
I am having a hard time remembering what I thought of the graphics of some MegaDrive games when they were actually new.
Been playing Motocross championship yesterday, at first I didn't like it. But after a while a really got the hang of it and begun to like it more and more. The game is pretty addictive! Shame about the dodgy sprites and weak sound.

VF Remix was an arcade game too.
Truth. On a trip to my native country in the caribbean almost ten years ago, I was browsing the shopping area in one of the towns and stumbled into what is still to this day THE BEST arcade I've been in. They had........everything. (Well, not the original "Street Fighter" which I still haven't played mano-a-coin-op) First time I ever played the coin-op of SF3: The World Warrior ("Holy crap! Look at all those smooth frames of animation! They aren't in Special Champ! Why does Ryu look like an pre-pubescent pussy?) I also recall seeing a vanilla VF1 cabinet and a VFR cabinet not too far from each other........wondering what the differences were besides the texture-mapping. Never got to play them though.
But yeah..........pointless coin-op release when VF2 was still burning up the 'cades. I believe there was also a retail version of VFR released for the Saturn.

I really dig shadow squadron, took me a sec to get everything down, but I like everything about it. I didn't know when I first started playing it that you can switch views from cabin to 3rd person by hitting the mode button. Comes in handy. I actually like the look of the flat shaded polygons, looks like last starfighter. There is a version of it on the saturn but it has been overhauled and looks pretty kick a$$. Other than that Knuckles chaotix is a lot of fun. Space Harrier is classic, I can play this game everyday without it getting old. I like to use the capcom arcade fighter stick on this one. I really want wrestlemania for the 32x. Looks like a fun arcade fighter. MK2 is good. Blackthorne is awesome! I didn't really like toughman contest as much as I thought I would, maybe I'll give it another try one of these days. Cosmic Carnage is Trash!! Fred Couples is a fun golf game if your drunk. I really want to like moto cross, but its just..Ughh. I liked star wars but once I try to get inside the stupid tunnel on the deathstar things get skippy and I can't tell WTF is happening. Kolibri is cool, but a little boring. I wish it was a more traditional style shooter with twitch gameplay. I hate the music also. Nice backgrounds. Havent played web of fire but watched it on youtube, game play looks bland, excellent graphics though. Tempo is crap, but spend a little time with it and you might like it. If your as lame as I am. Corpse Killer seems like it could have been good, I like the movie parts and characters, but the gameplay is horrid. It really could have been a good game if they had done a better job with the zombies.

I've broken my favorite 32X games down into several categories:
Enjoyment: Knuckles Chaotix and Mortal Kombat II
Overall presentation: Virtua Fighter
Killing time (literally): Doom and T-Mek
It should be noted that while I find Virtua Fighter to be a very impressive technical achievement, I don't really enjoy playing the game very much (it's just not my kind of fighting game). As for Doom, I have some fun with it, and I don't mind the smaller viewing screen, lack of sprites, etc. - but the bad programming that makes for common crashing is unforgivable. T-Mek is obviously crippled compared to the arcade original, but I still enjoy playing it in short bursts.
As for the 32X games I really, really don't like: Tempo (nice graphics but lousy gameplay) and Cosmic Carnage (do I even need to explain why?).
I love the 32X; I just wish it had been given a better chance on the market. :(

None of them. Doom was a pixelated mess, Cosmic Carnage was a terrible amateurish hack job, BC Racers was an awful racing game, Knuckles Chaotix didn't really do anything new except display more color on-screen than the Genesis, and Shadow Squadron was fun, but the environments were mostly empty (there is a great Sega Saturn sequel BTW). The 32X was the worst investment I've ever made. As a matter of fact, I'm going to sell it sometime this week!

I don't understand why certain members on this board give a shit about the 32x versions of these games. If you want to play Space Harrier, Afterburner, and Virtua Fighter, get a god damn Sega Saturn. And then you'll have a library of several hundred other games available, rather than 30. Not to mention having better versions (VF1 is arguable, but Remix renders it unnecessary).

Replace "Virtua Fighter" with "Outrun" and that is the exact reason why I bounced the 32x out of my collection. Add to that the "Columns Collection" and you have a system that spanks the 32x ALL DAY LONG.

I recently got a 32X for christmas. Heres the three, yes three, games I got with it.
Tempo: I love this game. I've heard people don't like the gameplay, but I've never had a problem with it, except for the time the game froze for no good reason. I'm guessing my 32X over heated since it was burning hot when it happend. Great music, great graphics...how can you NOT like this game?
Tempo's in the House, baby!
Virtual Racing: Not too bad. Its the only Genesis game I can get my friend to play. It ain't no Mario Kart, but its still good.
Star Wars Arcade: Man, when I first turned this game on my jaw just droped at the sight of those graphics! Unfortunately the game gets repetitive after a while.
And j_factor? I thought the Saturn sucked. Worst investment I ever made. If only more game were released here in the states...like the sequel to Tempo.

The saturn is the shit, its an excellent console. Forget all the sports crap that came out in the states, the jap shit is where its at. Its not really fair to compare the saturn to the 32x. I love the 32x but the saturn is a monster with a huge selection of great games. I don't really understand all the 32x hate either, i mean its a novelty item basically, who cares. Theres a couple good games so it is worth owning and it costs like 5 dollars so whats the problem with that. I wish dreamcast had a 32x, then sega would have crushed playstation and microsoft.
Rusty Venture

The problem with the 32x is that it is one of those things that seems great on paper, but not so hot when actually made.
I dislike it mainly because the library has a high crap-to-gold ratio and the games *I* wanted to play came in a much more convenient package called "Saturn".

The 32X is cool from a collector's point of view. I didn't buy one for the MASSIVE GAME LIBRARY, but because it was something new, cool and cheap! Plus I could play Space Harrier and After Burner on it. I didn't have to wait 2 or 3 years for them to come out on the Saturn. I don't regret purchasing the 32X. I can understand if the young kids who recently discovered Genesis don't want to waste money on it, though.
My 32X investment brought me millions. My stockbroker was right on that one. I am thirsty, I think I'll go invest in a Coke. I'm so glad I became an investment banker! Investing kicks ass!

Of Virtua Fighter, yes. The 32x version barely edges out the Saturn version of Virtua Fighter 1. But Saturn also has a game called Virtua Fighter Remix, which is a better version of the same game.
The PlayStation 2 too, if you take another VF game.
Not really... the PS2 version of Space Harrier is awfully different.
Aarzak
01-05-2008, 03:07 PM
Meh, both Saturn versions of the original VF still suck compared to the original Model 1 coin-op..........overall lower polygon counts and less detailed floors. Remix is arguably on-par with the original Tekken, which came out on System 11 (Playstation) hardware. But the latter's overuse of gouraud shading admittingly made its graphics look less blockier than all its competitors, even "Virtua Fighter 2".
But back to 32X........while they may not be the definitive ports of their respective games, the 32X ports of Space Harrier, After Burner, Virtua Racing and Virtua Fighter still are 4 of the best 32X games and a great benchmark for the console's untapped POWAAAAAAAAAAH!

Virtua Racing Deluxe-better than the Saturn version, I still enjoy playing it
Space Harrier-Believe it or not, getting the 32x cart was the first time I played the game. Insta-love. I still suck at it though.
Doom-honorable mention. I haven't touched it since I got a PC, but it was my most played 32x game when it was new.
Metal Head-Much like Doom, I had fun with this back in the day, but it's unplayable now.
I've got Afterburner on the way, I'm sure it will be put in the "awesome" list shortly.
