View Full Version : What makes you decide to use a Game Genie?

I'm probably an below average or average gamer, decent at some games, suck at others. I don't beat alot of games unless I put a ton of time into them, especially on sega games since you often have to start all over when you die. So, I'm getting a game genie in order to finish some games that I would just like to beat and would never see the end of them otherwise (been playing maximum carnage for, well, since it came out and never got close to beating it). My question is, assuming you have one, when do you decide that its time to use the GG--i.e. what determines your choice to give up and cheat? Is it merely when your frustration level goes through the roof? Do you make sure to try at least a certain amount of times? Don't want my ability to cheat to ruin my sega experience--need some help setting guidelines!
Normally if I enter any cheats at all into any game it's usually to just mess around and have fun (like Oblivion or the GTA Series).
If I had a game genie, I'd probably only really use it for that.
...Unless theres a cheat for lives or health in Golden Axe, I've died too many times against Death Adder's Mentor.

I have a Genesis 3 only so I don't use a Game Genie. If I had the ability to use a Game Genie, I'd only use it on games that I played for a long time and couldn't beat. Imagine never trying to beat a game on your own, using Game Genie codes, then never getting as good at it as you could have.

Yeah, I'm thinking of setting some sort of a time limit. Like if I have a game for a year and a can't advance past a certain part--I'll use it.
Also, isn't GG good for level skipping too? Still cheating I suppose, but if you constantly get to the same level and can't beat a certain boss or something, it could help you just to advance in the game right?
So Genies don't work with Genesis 3's? Not too familiar with that system.

You mean as long as you've already made it to that level?

A lot of games have cheat codes in them and you don't really need Game Genie. Even then you can go to the options in some games and drop the difficult to easy, and give yourself more lives.

I tried using my Game Genie to "enhance" my favorite games. Even right when I bought it way back when I just ended up spending too much time screwing with codes. I have friends who use it to make bad games playable (see Alien 3 with no time limits). To me, I just feel like I'm playing a bad game with less difficulty.
Codes I've used to increase my appreciation of a good game though. Target Earth and Ghouls N Ghost's invincibility codes saved me from giving up on them when I was a baby goat. I played both so much with invincibility on that I figured out I didn't need it anymore. It turned out that invincibility made me indestructible in the real game! I even finished Ghouls N Ghosts in the local Arcade on a few tokens after that.
Random thought though, I built my game cabinet to allow for the Game Genie to fit in my 32X and still get a cart on. For some reason that just isn't the case anymore. Maybe I screwed up when I added a shelf, but it is just plain sad to me that I can't use something that I have. That means I can't play Sonic 3 & Knuckles either, without removing the 32X.

Hilarious. I didn't even know there was turbo or what it did before I came here. Only had a three button and a regular six button when I was a kid.

Don't know if I can do that. For example, I want to finish Maximum Carnage and Adventures of Batman and Robin, but I've come to the realization that I'm never going to be able to with cheating unfortunately. It's not for a lack of trying. But, even though I KNOW I'll never beat these games without cheating, I still don't want to do it to tell you the truth haha.

You got that right. Well, unless the system had turbo from day 1(TurboGrafx 16 comes to mind), then it's a different story. Hell, the TurboGrafx 16 is the only system I use turbo on because the pack-in controllers already had turbo. Even with turbo controllers I have like the Genesis 3-button arcade stick, the NES Advantage and the Super Advantage, I keep turbo off at all times.
But anyways, the only reason I have a Game Genie is to play my US games on my Japanese MegaDrive. Since I don't want to mod my MegaDrive, I just look up region check bypass codes and use those to play the games. I rarely ever apply proper cheats with the Game Genie, but if I'm stuck in a certain game and want to see what I miss because I'm stuck at a certain spot, I whip out the Game Genie and put in some cheats. I did this with Thunder Force II MD, as the later Stages get really hard, and as it turns out, the only Stage I can't get to is the Final Stage. I only ever saw it once, and it's because I used the Game Genie to make my ship invulnerable.

I mostly use my Game-Genie to unlock hidden bosses and stuff like that,
but sometimes I just cant be bothered to master a game. (just don't care that much anymore)
and then I'll cheat, like recently I've cheated with Addams Family and Haunting, Starring Polterguy.
was just fun revisiting those games and seeing all the levels without having to worry about life's.
But mostly i try to refrain from cheating.

The only reason I've got a Game Genie is to break region locks on a number of PAL games that don't want to run in NTSC mode otherwise.

^^This Post^^
Not to mention some of the ridiculous difficulty that gets evened out for games such as batman and robin.
Other than these two options, I prefer to master these old games. Speed runs can really inspire great things.
