Okay, having run low on sleep and spending a couple hours on TV tropes' high octane nightmare fuel page I got curious as to what are the creepiest or downright scariest thing you have seen in a genesis game.

Here is my experience. Dead of night on a saturday in a dark basement playing Aladdin in the cave of wonders stage. When you fall into the lava you don't get the death animation but rather get shot back to the previous checkpoint. I ran out of continues and lives.

3 seconds of dead black screen and I was greeted by a sinister hiss and the cold scowl of jaffar. Needless to say I had trouble sleeping near TVs for awhile and to this day I rarely play Aladdin on genesis.

Scariest thing I've seen in a Genesis (well, Sega CD) game was Snatcher- a lot of moments where you'd open a door and a snatcher face would be there to greet you, or just scenes with a lot of suspense, like when the skeleton on the wall suddenly disappears. That creeped me out a ton- even more than Resident Evil or Silent Hill games, ironically.

I agree with Snatcher. Going through the labs right before you find the passage in act 3 is terrifying. All that stuff...

Also, the scene with the green haired chick... didn't see that coming. I think that Snatcher had some great tension because you never know when you need to throw down the controller and draw the Justifier.

I always thought the busted up hosts bodies in the Brood levels of X-Men 2 were pretty creepy. They're fairly subtly hidden in the backgrounds and on the bottom of the screen, but they're massively freaky when you notice that they're ripped open and their guts are hanging out. Pretty nasty actually especially for 90s Marvel comics back when they were quite strict about blood and gore.

It's not really scary, but playing Splatterhouse 3 in the dark with a big screen and pumped up volume is a pretty fun experience.

Also, I agree w/ Snatcher. The conclusion to Act 1 was one of those "gotcha!" moments for me that had me jump out of my seat.

When I was about 12 years old I returned Out of This World (Another World to us Euro gamers) to the rental shop about 15 minutes after renting it: I got utterly terrified by the unsettling athmosphere of the game, its eerie music and SFX, and by the idiotic-robotic face of Lester Knight on the weirdest cutscenes ever. I changed the game for another with a happier mood.

More than 15 years later, I'm a fan of this gaming masterpiece by Delphine Software.

The one I can remember now is the game over screen from Spider-Man vs The Kingpin (when you run out of time). My brother and I were really creeped out when we saw it, because we thought there was something wrong with the Genesis or our TV, but then we saw "GAME OVER" on the screen and we were relieved. Still, that creeped us out

One of the last times I remember being creeped out by a video game in general was with Altered Beast. Maybe it was my age (12). The fact that I had spent every waking non-school hour for months just to earn enough money to pay for the Genesis -Altered Beast package that November.

Either way, I vividly recall getting goosebumps in the second to last level. It was the first night I owned my Genesis. Even though I owned the Master System version already, the Genesis game just creeped me out that night.

I should note that horror flicks and survival horror games bore me to sleep.

I'm not sure about creepy, but Bio-hazard battle is one giant "EEEEEEWWWWWWWW" moment, what with all the big, mutated, and in some cases, vaguely phallic bad guys You come across.

Ecco the Dolphin sums it up nicely. It's not a game for your kids, unless you want to mentally traumatise them.

Oh yeah, that freaked me out back when I was 7 or 8. Now I look back and think it's kinda cool looking but oddly out of place for a kid/teen-oriented Gen game.

And that evil moon with graveyard level...

That reminds me of the final boss of Zombies Ate My Neighbors. As I recall, it was a floating head that you had to crack open and let all the brains out or something.

The intro to Mortal Kombat 2 was pretty killer when it came out. It was like the beginning to Final Fantasy 3. Only an awesome fighting game.

How about the creepy boss laugh in Strider? You know the one.

Fantasia's opening was creepy but the game was so bad I was in tears. Good thing for trade shops.

Similar to my jafar experience, Whenever I beat a conquest level in populous I am greeted some zombified monk congratulating me on winning. I at least still play the game on a rainy day.

Decap attacks death music always had me running for cover when I got owned, quite often actually to the point I played the game on mute. Notice by this point you can tell I'm phobia prone.

Certainly these experiences are not as creepy as this game's music for snes, who would have thought porky pig would be on my list of 16 bit nightmares.

snatcher was the more compelling sega cd game for me...hard to play it at night, in a dark room, and not feel the tension...

I knew what scene you were posting before I even clicked the link. The possessed teddy used to really send chills down my spine. Also, the Boreworm boss was creepy as well. Splatterhouse 3 and 2 both had some very eerie moments and some of the best atmosphere of any games on the system.

Some other Genesis games with some good chills

Chakan: The Forever Man- There's seldom an area of this game that isn't seeping with dread.

Saint Sword- It might seem like a strange choice, but some of the stages (the swamp and flooded caverns in particular) are pretty spooky. The music and twisted enemy designs really add to the creepiness.

Zombies ate my neighbors threw me off from the game for a few years because I wasn't aware of its tongue in cheek nature.

The first town in sword of vermillion has creepy music as well as the travel screen, threw me off at first but i learned to like it. Crisis averted.

Anybody else think that Ahh!! real monsters had a creepy vibe to it?

All I have to say is "Chainsaw Hegemaze Mayhem". I swear that level gave me nightmares.

Good choice.

I was playing Sonic and the Cops came knocking on my door. Turned out they got the wrong house, still scared the hell out of me though.

That just shows you shouldn't have a stable full of Guatemalan children stitching wallets in your basement. Then you'd be able to play your Sonic with peace of mind.
