View Full Version : Side by Side: Lords of Thunder
Genesis fans sure do love their shumps. As one of the richest genres on the console, there's no shortage of great games to play. The Sega CD continued this tradition with excellent original entries like Android Assault and Robo Aleste. It also had its share of ports, and one of the more controversial titles was Hudson's Lords of Thunder. Long held to be inferior to the Super CD-ROM2 original, we've put them through their paces to determine which is the superior version. Check out our lastest installment (http://www.sega-16.com/forum/../Side%20By%20Side-%20Lords%20of%20Thunder.htm) of Side by Side to see the results!

I'm getting a serious case of deja vu. Wasn't this already a side-by-side?
Nope. You're thinking Forgotten Worlds, I think.

No, I'm definitely thinking of Lords of Thunder. I remember in the thread about it, you noting how neither version is uncommon at all and TZD still sells it. Maybe it was the review?
That's the only other LoT piece on the site, so it may have been a thread about the review.

Wow, that sure was truncated. The part where I talk about listening to the difference between the sounds makes little sense since the MP3s posted are not the ones the paragraph was talking about. Was there any reason why more of the comparison pics and comparison sounds couldn't be used? I like to give a thorough report and the posted article is not as thorough as originally written. I spent a lot of time making the pics and the sound comparisons, only to have barely any of them used.
There should also be a link to this thread from the article (and that goes for every article on the site) which would encourage more people to discuss features and reviews after reading stuff on the main page. We may even get more members out of it!

The Sega CD version has to have the manliest Viking box art ever. It looks like Boris Vallejo's favorite dream come to life.

I got a sense of deja-vu as well, but check out the date of the article:
July 30, 2006
I think it is supposed to be June 30, 2006.

I've never heard the music directly compared between the two games.. the difference in guitar sound is what stands out to me most. The Sega CD soundtrack definitely enjoys better guitar production.
..but yeah, that section on audio comparison had me a little baffled. Like you said, Joe, the sound clips don't match up with the paragraph. Aside from that, I thought it was a solid enough comparison, although if indeed a great deal of content was edited out, I'd like to read it.

I added the sound clips you mentioned in the paragraph, as well as another shot comparion after the "other" section. The reason all of them aren't used is because then the article would be more pics than text, and the majority of the comparion comes from the explanations. I had a ton of pics for all the other SbS I did but couldn't use them all because of that. The article would just look too crowded.
As for the text, I only edited out the part that kind of knocked at TG fans. Everything else is the same, no? If there's anything you feel should be added, let me know, and we'll take care of that pronto. :)

That's a good idea. We can do that from now on and add in the older articles little by little.

Sega cd version is horrible, period. Crappy remixed music, watered down graphics, loud as heck sound effects, just sick it man.

I didn't really mind the pics being edited out, I was more concerned about the sound which is what everyone makes a big stink about. Anyway it is fine now, thanks. I also don't really remember knocking Turbo fans in the article and didn't notice anything like that missing. I myself am a huge TG-16 fan. The opening sentence was altered with my description about ate of Thunder. It's basically the same, but I meant for it to be the way I typed it. Basically you just made it more grammatically correct instead of the long run-on sentence it originally was. :)
Crappy remixed music
Please explain the horrible differences you hear that nobody else but anti-Genesis fanboys seem to notice. You seem to be our resident anti-Genesis member judging from your other posts.

I know this is a feature, but can a review for Lords of Thunder for the Sega CD possible?
I'm thinking about doing it.
We already have one. It's linked at the beginning of the article. :)
more reviews (and thus more opinions) of the same games couldn't be a bad thing could it?

It just sounds corny and overall too soft. crappy is the best word i can think of.

Extremely poor and lacking explanation. Guitars still thrash and all of that good stuff. Hardly soft. If the Sega CD version has crappy music, then so does the Turbo version.

I dont see big diffrences maybe diffrences but not many,i think animation wise sega cd could do better due its better hardware.Tg 16 may have more colors but lacks many options in what it can do its older eh,sam story as with sens yeah nice many colors bur never seen more then 50 inscreen in any tg16 game instead over the bluffing 512? i played tg 16 yesterday i didnt like it as much as my sega genesis i tought it was lacking graphics man some games look like shitty nes ports and some dont i dont like that.I can tell from screenshot one that the sega cd version does look brighter and doesnt lack certain colours, while on other screenshot it the other way around i see that their almost equal.

I already saw it i thinks it was to fanbase, they give the sega cd version no credit at al,why Dunno i played it on sega cd i liked the game pretty much i would rate it a 8,5 or 8,not a bad game, maybe the TG16 version is better but the diffrence is very little believe me,its not like comparing mickey mania snes to the sega cd version. The tg16 version could be better but the sega cd version does a good job also, only thevolume of the music is very low idd but heck im not bothered by that.
