It's down to the quater finals now. Brasil are always a good chance to win but the Germans are playing some good shit. England are, a bit, meh but when the pressure's on England can beat any team. Argentina's another good bet but we done them a large one in the last friendly. I recon England will reach the semis tomorrow as I stand with beer in hand & tear in my eye.
Germany
Argentina
Brasil
England
Oh, it's a soccer thing by the way.

IMHO Brazil has the best chance to win... if their players can learn to play as a team... Argentina lost to Germany, but I guess you know that by now. :p

That my friend was an intended plant to see if anyone was really interested. Germany & Argentina couldn't go through because they were both playing each other for a place in the semis as I was posting. Could have done with a better punch up at the end in my opinion.
Everyone always has Brasil down as the favourites. Yeah yeah top players & all that but Ronaldo seems to have had his day & I don't think Ronaldiniho can play for his country at the same level as he plays for Barcelona. England - Brasil final I want to see, just to put things right from the 1970 final. I mean, no Pele, no problem.

Well, today we upheld two English cliches: We're terrible at penalty shootouts, and we got knocked out in the quarters. Wooo-hoooo, see you in 2008.
The overall winners? Germany. Maybe France.

Oh well, there's Cheslea winning the Premiership, Champions League, Worthington Cup & FA Cup to look forward to I suppose.

Italy
Germany
France
Portugal
What do you think will happen? I think Italy will side with Germany, France will surrender, Portugal will start to win & Italy will defect to the Portugese side.

That was quite the game. Word to the wise: Do not head-butt in your last international game. They do have cameras nowadays. PKs were an unfortunate, but fitting cap to the WC.

That was pretty sad for ZiZu - what an awful way to go out.

I agree. It kinda' made me wonder though... What *would* cause ZiZu to do what he did? I was hoping to seem him go out in a Blaze of Glory...:(

In almost every game I've ever seen, any time there is a pentalty kick the goalie usually goes the complete opposite direction of the ball. Do you have to pre-qualify as a retard to be a goalie?

During a penalty kick the goalie has to make a guess about how fast & which way the ball is going to go. By the time the ball is actually kicked it's too late for the goalkeepe to react. The player kicking the ball, on the other hand, may have a split second to read the goalie's movements and try to send the ball in the other direction.
Thus: Player runs towards ball=>Goalie hopes the player shoots to the right & starts diving to the right=>Player notices Goalie starting to dive to the right & shoots the ball to the left.

Instead he went out in shame. I'm sure all of France is seething with anger about it.

Beat me to it, Mendicant. Also, the players are expected to be able to fake out the goalies. PKs favor the players. If a goalie blocks it, it is often the player's 'fault'. No need to beat up on the goalies!

It needs to be pointed out that the PKs in this case were sort of odd - usually goalies get their hands on a few of the shots.

It probably has something to do with the fact that the balls in this World Cup are the most spherical balls used so far. That and the people taking the shots are amongst the best in the world.
Blaze, it *is* the falut of David Trezeguet for *missing* the goal, at the cost of French victory. However, had the shot been caught by the goalie, it would've been considred more of a good luck on the goalie's part, rather than the player's fault.

So basically Penalty Kick=95% chance of scoring? That's no fun.

It's not fun. But after running around the field for roughly two hours, chances are, the players are willing to do anything to quickly settle the game. *Anything*. :p

Is that not what I said? It is what I meant to convey, anyway. <_<
Fun, no. Tense, YES!

Everyone hates PKs, but no one can decide on a better tiebreaking alternative. It's just sad that the WHOLE World Cup comes down to the luck-fest that is PKs.

You could argue, though, that if the teams can be so evenly matched as to still be tied at 1 goal each after ninety minutes (plus thirty minutes for extra time, minus about ten for half-time), penalty kicks are as good a method as any to decide the game. In the end, it comes down to the striker keeping his cool to get the ball in the net, and the goalkeeper remembering which direction player x tends to shoot towards, which foot he uses, and so on. Of course, blind luck has a hand in there too.

Did I read right? Or did the President of Italy say that France fielded a team of blacks, muslims & communists? Bold words coming from anyone in the public eye anyway. I like his style. If you're going to start a fight, you may as well make it a good one.
