From the age 12 up until a year ago I was hardcore RPG'r.... I left platformers and shmups for this genre (except Sonic... can't leave the ol' hog). My first RPGs were on my SEGA; Lunar, then Shining Force. I then went on to enjoy such great games as:

Lunar 2
SF2
PS 1,2 and 4 (I am one of the many to hate 3)
LandStalker
D+D eternal sun thinga ma bob (dont remember the full name)
Shadowrun

then onto the Saturn for more (the list gets very long from there on out)

So what are your fav RPGs for the genny?

I am, but I'm much more of a PC RPG gamer. They are far from as restrictive, usually contain actual role-playing elements and feel as if they actually bring the genre forward as opposed to their japanese counterparts...

I'm a big psOne RPG'er...

But I'm playing phantasy star 2 right now. I like it.

I'm just not very fast w/ them. I got the key to get the dynamite finally. Kept getting sidetracked by sonic... damn that blue hedgehog.

Back in the day, I managed to miss the whole genre. I got my first RPG, Shining in the Darkness, about 5 or 6 years ago, and I loved it. Then I got Light Crusader, an excellent game also.

I got Phantasy Star Collection for GBA few months ago. PS1 was great. First I hated PS2, but I learned to love it. Too hard, but the story was nice. Then PS3, "the worst RPG ever". After all bad things I had heard about this game, I had no expectations. Somehow I failed to see what's wrong with it. In other words, I love it. Maybe not as good as other games in series, but still a great game nonetheless.

Currently I'm playing Shining Force remake on GBA. It gets better and better. I definitely need some more RPGs. Can't wait until I get Phantasy Star 4 or Shining Force 2.

I don't have as much time for them as before, but I still love me a good RPG every now and then! On the Genesis, Shining in the Darkness and PS II are my favorites, and I love Popful Mail on the Sega CD.

The ones I enjoy the most are the Action RPGs, as the turn based stuff gets a bit boring after a while. At least to me. My top RPG list:

#1 Beyond Oasis - Far and away. Must buy, must buy, must buy!
#2 Landstalker
#3 Crusader of Centy
#4 Light Crusader

I like rpg's. My second favorite genre after shmups. My favorite rpg's are chrono trigger and FF3 on the snes and the Ys series on the turbo. Genesis had some nice ones too though. Beyond Oasis, Phantasy Star 2 and 4, Crusader of Centy, and the genesis version of Ys 3 were all great games. I tried to play the D&D game today for the first time and couldn't get into the battle system. I generally prefer action rpg's with a few exceptions(phantasy star, chrono trigger).

Out of all the system's I've had, owned and played.
My favorites are

Dreamcast
PsOne
Genesis.

and the Psone is only there for the RPG's.

I wish there were more genesis rpg's, and I wish they were more accessible economically.

I've been gaming since 1982/3 (since I was 4/5 yrs old) and I didn't play a single RPG outside of Zelda till 1997 when FF7 came out on the PSX. My GF at the time bought it and was so obsessed with it that I gave it a shot and was intriqued by the genre *what an interesting kinda game I thought to myself* and from then on I grew into loving RPGs. My fav. sub genre are tactical/strategy RPGs like FFT or Tactics Ogre, and it makes sense since my first RPG I beat was Dragon Force on my Saturn. I know it sounds lame now to not have noticed the genre before FF7 but I was always really big into sports/arcade/action type of games and I very much still am, it's why I love my Sega Genesis: arcade perfect ports, beat-em-ups/shumps/run-an-gun/and sports games galore. Nonetheless I've made up for lost time by tracking down tons of RPGs for older systems and enjoy 'em to this day. As for my fav system for RPG's I gotta hand it to the PSX as it's loaded with 'em. I've got almost 100 PSX games and a good percentage of them are RPGs! Coming in second is a tie between the Sega CD & SNES, one had a ton, the other had only a handfull but boy were they great. Chrono Trigger vs. Lunar, man that's a toughie...

P.S. I loved my Dreamcast and Skies of Arcadia/Grandia II were 2 of the best RPGs to grace any system IMO but there's not enough of an RPG selection on the DC to place it in my top 3, sorry.

Heh, I'm a huge RPGr, I love to play RPG's. On the genny, I like Phantasy Star, Beyond Oasis, Sword of Vermillion, and especially the Shining Force series.

I'm a pretty big fan of RPGs. I started out with Zelda and Dragon Warrior on the NES and then got into the Phantasy Star series on the Genesis. Shining in the Darkness and the Shining Force games were great too. I'm playing through Light Crusader now, which I don't really classify as an RPG, more action adventure than anything. And I have Sword of Vermillion that I'm struggling to get through. Not that it's tough, but I just hate having to fight a battle every two or three steps. I'm trying to find a copy of Crusader of Centy, I heard that's pretty good.

I'm still playing Phantasy star II. I'm happy I have 4 characters and they're getting pretty powerful now.

Of the few Genesis RPGs I've played, Phantasy Star II is my top pick. I'm sure Phantasy Star IV could unseat it, but I have yet to solidify myself a copy o' that one, and would rather play through it for the first time on a genuine Genesis console as opposed to tempting emulation. So ol' #4 will have to wait.. then there are Crusader of Centy and Beyond Oasis that are needed badly by my collection. Beggar Prince, too, whenever the hell it gets its release.

But in the grand RPG scheme, my heart lies with the many greats on SNES and PlayStation. There's an RPG for everyone among those two consoles.

I crush RPGs like they are soft, frail, girlie-men.

I have pretty much whooped on anything Square came out with on NES, SNES, PS1, or PS2.

I have all of my SNES RPGs left over listed in my trade thread in the Bazaar section.

RPG's, outside of S-RPG's & real old school RPG's like Phantasy Star, don't require any serious amount of skill in mastering; especially Square's games. It's the reason why they are so easy to get into by just about anyone, especially girls. You enjoy those games for the characters/stories/worlds, not because they present any serious challenge. If you're gonna brag about mastering a genre at a Genesis forum then brag about mastering genres that require skill: shmups, run-n-gun, beat-em-ups, or even fighting games.

Heh, there are quite a few older RPG's that I find to be quite difficult actually. I am with you about Square though.

While I know this was directly asking for RPG fans, (and I am part of that group), just thought I'd share my latest article with those of you who are also fans of Lunar and/or own a DS. The new Lunar game, entitled Lunar: Dragon Song ships next month. You can read the official report here:

Those are pretty decent. Still for any RPG collecter you must have the Shining Force series. *nods head*

David J.
09-12-2005, 03:59 PM
Well, since I'm not a big fan, I'm not really going to take the time or money to buy them, unless they just showed up for cheap one day.

09-12-2005, 04:45 PM
Oh, that was more just an outburst of my fanboyism towards a series that is remarkably awesome than a serious suggestion as you'd already said that you don't particuarly like RPG's... still everybody should worship Shining Force.

How badly were shining force II and phantasy star II mutilated on the Dreamcast "Smash Pack" compilation?

David J.

They're direct emulations, just the sound is messed. I didn't think it was THAT bad.

The sound is god-awful. Otherwise they're exactly the same.

Demonic Weasel
09-15-2005, 11:18 PM
And that's why you should get the originals if you can manage it. All the same the games remain lovable despite the sound.
