Gunstar Heroes = Overrated?

That's what I'm beginning to think. I've owned it for about a year now, and I just don't get all the hype. Great game? Yeah. Best game on system? No. Best game EVAR!!!11!!!1!! Certainly not. The graphics don't blow away other Genesis games, and I'm not really feelin' the 'brilliant gameplay.'

What's your opinion, O Sega-16 citizens?

Yeah, it's a great game. But there are better graphics, better sound, better challenge to be found on other games for this system. Gameplay and control is absolutely on the top though. I prefer Contra: Hard Corps and Gunstar Heroes is maybe a little overrated, but you have to hail it for using the power of the 68000 so well.

You just can't argue with its fun factor. It is a great game! But those who attach an 'est' to it probably don't own more than a dozen games.

That aside, I like the game: it's challenging, it's very technically impressive, it's fun, it's crazy, it's crazy-Japanese-y (seriously, 'Melon Bread' boss?), and you get big explosions.

It's also a measure of Defcon Three - the 'Big Mama' warhead - in Super NES vs. Mega Drive wars :D

My favorite level of the game is probably the super long one right after the four initial stages. It's the only one where you can just let 'er rip for an extended period of time.

I kind of agree about the dice palace thing. I can find some fun in it, though. Isn't there a shooter level? It's been awhile since I played through the whole thing, but I seem to remember a lame shooting level.

I find the Dice Palace to be one of the best parts of the game. I don't mind GH but the players don't seem to run fast enough; when I first played Alien Soldier after getting it earlier this month I was blown away by how fast the gameplay was, especially compared to GH.

Does anyone know why you fight only five of the Seven Force? I mean, with two left they aren't seven (makes sense!).

I'm pretty sure you fight all seven on the hardest difficulty, as Easy mode only has 3 incarnations.

Yeah, I agree. He's nuts. :) How can you not love the stage that brings out Melon Bread? :) Worst stage is that way too long gauntlet that's level five. After those four great and diverse opening levels, let's spend like 15 minutes... running to the right... on and on... never ending... :daze:

I don't think it's over-rated in the least. I can't think of a game which betters it, even a decade plus since its original release. I will agree that individually the parts of the game are bettered in other Genesis titles, but Gunstar packages them together better than any other game in my opinion.

Even better than Alien Soldier? Although they're quite different, I guess, since AS focuses on boss battles while GH is more of a crowd-clearing game.

It's not the greatest game ever, but I don't think it's overrated. It earned and deserves its place in the hallowed halls of classic video games. It's just pure gameplay and fun the whole way through.

I got this for a few bucks, and while it's fun, it's not the most amazingist gamever. The graphical tricks are cool, but it's just fun.

Yet I wouldn't pay much more for it.

Gunstar Heroes is great, and definately one of my all time favorites.
But I agree that to say it's the best on the system is a bit hyperbolic.

It still stands out amonst most of the Genesis library.
Perhaps you just prefer slower methodical adventure games? ;)



Contra: Hard Corps would have been more acceptable if it had the Life-Bar used in the original Japanese version. The traditional one-hit death makes the US version a bit more frustrating than it needs to be. I don't have the time or patience to memorize every last bullet and enemy in the game. Which is also the reason I don't like 'Ninja Gaiden II' on the NES.

Gunstar is cool, but not so cool. I'm more found of games like Streets of Rage 2. That kind of games are cool. I like to fight, but not Final Fight -_-!

Yeah, I can't think of too many shooters or similar type games where people really care about the endings. They're an arcade genre like fighters -- endings while nice aren't really the selling point.

i care for endings,and alien soder yes arcade wise but the system is to fast rushig from bos to bos while barely walking is crap the graphics are good but some levels are getting repetetive after a while the too much fabriks are going to bore you at one point and there isnt really exciting thing going on youre purpose is to beat the bosses the rest isnt really active yuolle get youre decent lookign stages a hell of a begin story and a really crappy end,you get a beginning and the graphics and music arent that wow for a genesis TF and batman and robin they have eye candy gunstar also but alien soldeir lacks animation in the backgrounds and has boring looking bosses which only goal is to defeat em soon tge music is ways too spacy and crap,the game could have been better the character animations are cool teh game doesnt lack colors but i cant vind a reason that it should intrest me ways too short noo teriffic 3d or scaling techniques just decent game worth a 7,and noo not a 9 cause the game is too shjort too expensive and has no depth in the story and is just a run trough level game with no specialty and bring and many of the same looking levels.Nes games looked crap nut where hell of good like contra 2 old school ehy end the anding was nothing special but had something to say,and you where happy for getting a ending.

im strange i know but unik is the right worth i give alien soldier a 8 for pushing the hardware but the game hasnt got as much in its mars if youre good in it then its a run and rush game youlle see the levels flash by and cant really enjoy the bigness of the levels,i found it a pretty simple game but you guys enjoy it dont want to discurrage you guys its my look on the game and that doesnt really have to be a pushing reaon for you guys to not like it too,overal its a good game but im to good at it LOL,i gained hart for the game aggain in thispast hours i realize it shows some pretty bashing visuals to beat many many many snes games.

I think Gunstar Heroes is way better than Alien Soldier.
The only thing that makes AS so interesting is that it did not see a US-release for some reason.

Gunstar Heroes is nothing short from awsome, its the best side scrolling shooter i've played. And a favorite genesis game (I have emulated version but i dearly hope i run into a real one soon). But i don't see how people over rate it.. Seems meh, to most people.

I think there is a shooter stage as well. I rarely play past the dice palace in the game. I also remember not being fond of the shooter stage.

I think the whole game is great, but if you die at the end of stage five, it becomes tiresome to play it through again.

Yep, and it's so long that I think it's the only semi-sour point in the game.

Dice Palace is fantastic and the shooter stage is fun, too. They're both loaded with variety, and the change of pace is needed to make the action side-scrolling levels stand out more. Even Contra and most of its sequels always had some kind of non-side-scrolling in-between stages.

i really dont know what the problems of the game is i completed it twice i had no trouble with the game,level 5 is a bit tiresome when beginning al over aggain,but still those are very miniscule problems,same as dice palace please Dice palace is kindo fun you see several stages scrol by that al look great,i love the game,it doesnt have big problems it just doesnt,the space level yes bit boring but its funny that youre enemys look very tiny,i just love the game i rate it a 9,4.

Fair enough. I personally found the side scrolling sections became tiresome, probably because I'm used to the fast pace of Alien Soldier.

Yeah and alien soldier looks great but has repetetive levels many of em look the same,and i dont like that rush o game.I asume the downers in gunster a minscule?.i really like this game and yes there are boring parts but the game is huge what do you expect,it plays easy and simple,some levels dont look as good as others but no mayor problems,the music is good like 8 or 9 channels which its sequal cant fix.
