still hope you guys like this and please even if you have negative comment post it because i want to know were i can make this thing better before i send to be made into an actual article. if it'll help post it

note:in the final article will have pics for reference

now we've seen some consoles let's talk contollers
_____________________________________________
sega genesis activator ( 3 button controller )

durability : 8
responsiveness : 9.25
design : 7.75

pros : - nice,big retro feel
- easy to hold
- fresh breath of air away from the 2 buttoned nes controller
- simple enough for begginers who want to get into gaming

cons : - some people find the activator too bulky
- games like mortal kombat that have 4 or more buttons
controll albeit clunkier that the 6-button because
certain moves share buttons which makes moves like
an uppercut impossible in mortal kombat

for example in mortal kombat 1

6-button 3-button

a-high punch a-high punch/high kick
b-block b-block
c-low kick c-low punch/low kick
x-high kick
y-block
z-low punch

overall : 8.75

conclusion : a fresh breath of air in '89 was the genesis packaged with
altered beast and the 3-button activator. away from the same old 2 button
nintendo controller the activator gave more controll the then the nes
controller and actually had a name.although really great, durable and sega
fans like me will still use it time to time for games like sonic, and
streets of rage, but the flaw to this controller is it feels obsolete
and clunky when used with games like mortal kombat.

sega genesis 6-button

durability : 9
responsiveness : 9.75
design : 9

pros : - newer, sleeker controller to resemble the new genesis it came with
- even easier to hold
- has a "MODE" shoulder button that allows you to switch between
letting all 6 buttons be usable or if you're used to the activator
it can allow the a,b, and c buttons be the only ones that respond
to the game
- thanks to the size reduction, and sleeker body of the controller,
it is now more easier to store.

cons : - is there any cons ?

overall : 10

conclusion : take an already great controller and completly overhaul it just
in time to screw over the super nintendo. it's just hard to find something
wrong with this controller. anybody who says there are some serious problems
with this controller type must have it confused with the cheesy, poorly made,
easily-breakable, rush job that is the majesco's 6-button controller
__________________________________________________ ___________________________
majesco 6-button controller

durability : 4
responsiveness : 8
design : 6

pros : - the only redeeming thing about this plastic crap is that it
reasembles something far greater

cons : - so incredibly breakable
- came with the genesis 3... 'nuff said
- poor constuction screams RUSH JOB
- like the console it came packaged with, it falls incredibly short
of what it tries to copy

overall : 5

conclusion : i've used a majesco 6-button in the past a few times and let
me tell you. i've had seen d-pads and buttons fall off over a short period
of time, and it came with the genesis 3... 'nuff said. don't blame me if
you've had better experiences, i'm just reporting my past experience with
this controller

now a portable
__________________________________________________ __
sega nomad

durabilty : 6.25
features : 8
entertainment : 7-10 ( depending in your tastes )
presentation : 6.25 ( presentation being ads,commercials )
sound : 7
graphics : 7
apperance : 8.75

pros : a hand-held genesis...nuff said
still played majority of genesis title well

cons : devoured batteries
some games were blurred beyond play
some small screen blur

overall : 8

conclusion : a hand-held genesis was a great idea but some screen blur, and
short battery life got in the way of making this portable flawless
__________________________________________________ _______________
and we can't forget a limited edition console

sega genesis cdx

durability : 9
features : 9
entertainment : 6-9 ( depending in your tastes )
presentation : 8 ( presentation being ads,commercials )
sound : 8
graphics : 8-9 ( depends what type of game )
apperance : 10

pros : cdx is very rare collecters item
even sleeker look
even faster than model 2 at loading games
head-phone jack
about same size as genny 3 which makes it perfect for vacation
plays both genesis carts and sega cds without the need for 2 consoles
compatable with power base converter
compatable with sega 32x

cons : 3 sega cd games are proven not compatable

Radical Rex
Terminator
Who Shot Johnny Rock?

jurassic park just takes a long time to load

overall : 9.75

conclusion : even though not the most popular model, but one of the most
highly sought after and more then likly convienient.known to be quite a
collectors item.and proven to be compatable with everthing the model 2
is

Have you contacted Melf about this? Because I'm not sure that a Sega Gear review of the 32X is gonna fly, since it's a brand new system instead of an accessory or alternate model. Also, he handles the pictures as well so there's no reason to bother with that.

Er...is this just sort of posting your opinion on the forum, or an actual article for the main site? I can't really tell. If it's the latter, I'll just give you a heads-up that things don't really work like this. You need to give much more indepth coverage - enough to have a multiple page article about a single unit (like the CDX, for example).

If it's the former, then...carry on.

this is going to be an aritcle on the site and i just wanted to know if i missed something vital before i contacted any officials

Read the contributors page on the site for the rules and information. It explains the format Sega-16 uses and how to go about being a contributor to the site. One of the things you're not supposed to do is post your contribution on the forums.

Why did you cal the 3-button contrller the Activator?

I'm pretty sure that the Sega CD 1, Sega CD 2, and CDX et al had the same speed CD drive.... 1x.

I've never heard it called that either, can we call the 3DO controller the highlander? "There can be only one!" :D

The activator is this thing:
http://www.geocities.com/metalkeir/activator.jpg

You would stand inside it and supposedly your actual movements would control the genesis game. Needless to say, the result was poor.

Okay, here's what it actually did (from urban dictionary):

"A player stood inside it and controlled on-screen action by breaking one of the eight infrared beams it was directing upward. The Activator sent signals to the Genesis console which were interpreted as if corresponding controller buttons had been pressed. Players criticized the Activator as being an unwieldy and inaccurate game controller."

I could be wrong, but I was under the impression that the model 1 was 1x and the model 2 was faster, (2x I think.) I don't know what the Sega-CD was.

The Saturn was the first system from Sega to sport a 2x drive.

yea, my sega CD model 2 is no way a 2X drive..

j_factor
01-20-2007, 02:57 AM
I was under the impression that the combo systems had a slightly faster drive. "1x" is kind of an after-the-fact term and in fact, CD drives under 2x vary in speed. For example, the Neo Geo CDZ had a faster drive but it was still not 2x.

Is there any difference between model I and II Mega CDs except from how they look?

evildragon
01-20-2007, 02:14 PM
their BIOS is different, and some hardware changes..

Zebbe
01-20-2007, 02:35 PM
Explain a little bit deeper, if you can, I'm really interested.

evildragon
01-20-2007, 02:46 PM
I'll try...

The BIOS is different in the fact it was engineered by two totally different groups...

The hardware is different, in that the Sega CD 2's hardware can take the Genesis 2 sounds, and mix it via the expansion connector, without the need for a mixing cable... Sega CD 1 didn't have this as the Genesis 1 didn't have an expansion bus that sported audio out...

Hardware differences include that the Mode 1 CD has a motorized tray, and requires the Sega Genesis' reset button to eject (but will NOT reset).. The Sega CD 2 uses a flip door that is purely only springs and latches, and pushing reset on the genesis does just that, resets...

The laser assembly in these cases are completely different, but are non-the-less still 1X..

Zebbe
01-20-2007, 03:56 PM
Thanks a lot. I don't think those differences make any of the models better than the other one, which was what I was wondering, really.

evildragon
01-20-2007, 04:08 PM
well, the laser assembly in the model 2, is supposedly better at reading CD-R's...

while yea, both models can read CD-Rs, the model 1 is very picky about them (depends on the brand of media used, i find "AZUL" brands EXCELLENT for the Sega CD model 2, but burning those CDs are hard..)

TheGZeus

....I'd say something, but it wouldn't help.
It would just anger a few people.

Ok, it doesn't actually matter to me, now that I have the Mega Cart and don't need to burn CDs to change BIOS and all that. I have the model II btw :P.

I'm fairly interested to know what the model 1 BIOS does on a model 2 Sega CD...

MegaCart detects your factory-set BIOS and selects the appropriate BIOS for your hardware. I own a model II, and get the model II US, EU and JAP BIOSes through MegaCart. I guess the only way you could satisfy your curiosity would to physically modify your system by finding the BIOS chip and replacing it.

Along with the audio-handling difference, I'd imagine it's handled by merged components on board the model II - like the Mega Drive II and the Mega Drive I - as a cost-cutting measure.

From what Fonzie has mentioned in the MegaCart thread, the Mega-CD is pretty much identical across regions, save from a different factory BIOS.

edit: VVV yeah, pressing reset on a model II takes you to the BIOS screen and the dancing logos. I thought the same happened on the model I, along with opening the CD tray?

How does the Genesis1/Sega CD 1 not reset? When the reset button is pressed, you are back at the BIOS screen. If you want to get back to the title screen you can press A+B+C+Start on many games. If pressing reset on the Sega CD 2 returns you to the title screen, then the CD software inserted MUST support that feature or it won't know what to do. If the CD just starts rebooting the game from scratch when the reset button is pressed, I don't really see how that's much different from the Sega CD 1.

wait, how does your model 1 eject the tray? I was told that pushing reset did NOT reset it, and only ejected the tray...

Joe Redifer

Yes, it ejects the tray and goes back to the Sega CD logo with the silly "BOM BOM BOM BOM BOM BOM BOM BOM BOM!" music.

ok.. i wonder how games that want you to eject in the MIDDLE of the games work then...

oh, and when you push RESET, when at the SEGA CD BIOS, does it restart the music, blank the screen for a second, or does it just eject?

It restarts everything and has the blank. Games that require CD-switching will open the tray themselves when it is time to switch CDs. No need to press reset. The model 1 kicks tons of ass.
