This one's for daminmancejin2!

Everyone likes Ninjas; it's a fact that not even the 1980s could erase. Genesis owners got treated to a ninja trilogy rivaled only by perhaps Tecmo's Ryu Hayabusa on the NES. The second game in Sega's famous series, Shadow Dancer, was altered from its arcade release but still played and looked great on our beloved 16-bit box. Ninja and Shinobi fans alike will thrill to our full review (http://www.sega-16.com/2005/07/shadow-dancer-the-secret-of-shinobi/) of it, so sharpen those shuriken and get to reading!

It's because this thread is so old that it was posted back under the original filename system.

And here was me thinking it was a new review. I'm going to have to start paying attention to the dates posted. Curse you Damninmancejin2 for replying to a thread over two years just so you can add a pointless post about Shadow Dancer, I hope your new Genesis breaks and you are deprived of the game you love.

Of all the 3 Shinobi games on the Genesis, this is the easiest (except for the last boss), yet the most fun to play. The graphics are decent and the music is good, but not as good as ROS's. The thing that disappointed me was that this is not the arcade port. How ironic that the SMS got the arcade and not the Genesis. I'd rate this game a 7.

that fire effect in the first level's getting old
Shadow Dancer was probably only the 3rd game or so in the US to do that effect at the time.

And I assume that "SUNDAA FOS SHRII!" was one of the first two?

Genesis Shadow Dancer's sprite looks better than the fat, unshapely arcade Shadow Dancer sprite. But yeah, I'd say the Genesis would've been better off with a real arcade port. Many of Genny's SD levels are drab and lifeless, and the enemies are repetitive as well.

Nice soundtrack though. The game was supposedly re-released as a "Sega Classic' sometime around 1992. "Strider" had stolen SD's thunder around that time period though.

I must say I clearly prefer the Genesis-Shadow Dancer over the arcade game (although I have only played home-ports of that one).

Daminmance has been using alts to post about Shadow Dancer on every major gaming board since 2000-ish. People know him.

Yes, this is just one of many boards I've seen this character at. He's been haunting GameFAQ's Genesis-related forums for years now.

Scary how he's EVERYWHERE.

Wow, it's not enough that you have your own thread to tell us about how much you love Shadow Dancer is it? You have to fill this one with shit too.

The fact that Daminmancejin is now trolling every other Shadow Dancer related topic on Sega-16 is not a good situation. Power crazy mods take note and return the original topic back to the Genesis Does forum.

I like this game. I've been playing it a bit recently and I've managed to find a ton of extra lives, but I still can't beat the damn last boss. Too many damn black ninjas!

I have been playing the shit out of Shadow Dancer lately, amazing game. I just can not get over how awesome the song is for the bonus round. I really wish Shinobi III had a "Shoot All Ninjas!" bonus round type of deal like the arcade game, and SD.

Shadow Dancer sounds excellent on my Model 1 HDG Genesis. Some thumping bass, I love it.

Shadow Dancer has moved up on my list of favorite Shinobi games. I have never played the Arcade version, is the SMS port worth messing with?

Well, he was still posting in the Shadow Dancer thread earlier this year.
So... yeah, I guess he really is one guy who loooooves Shadow Dancer. :)

Shadow Dancer always jarred with me. It took the cheap arcade kill past my patience limit, was nothing like Revenge of Shinobi and ended up being a frustrating experience rather than an enjoyable one. So I tried playing it again 20 years down the line :)

It's still nothing like Revenge, employs the cheap arcade kill without so much as by-your-leave and is still frustrating at times. What strikes me about Shadow Dancer now though - given 20 year's distance - is it plays more like a puzzle game than a platform/adventure. Basically there's one good route through a level and you've got to find that to win the game properly and score the maximum amount of points. Everything else you do is about as productive as trying to mash together two ill-fitting jigsaw pieces - you might beat the game by doing so, but you end up with an imperfect result.
