I think Mario or Zelda is gonna win. My favorite serie is Final Fantasy.

Hum, Final fantasy i didn't like. It has like 2 good games. You know when a seris is over rated when Final Fantasy X-2 sells over 5 million copies.

I really enjoy every game from IV to X. In X-2 they lost the feeling, but it's okay anyway. I haven't played XI (not a fan of online playing). Maybe XII will be good, even though the male protagonist makes Backstreet Boys look hetero, and the female protagonist makes Britney Spears look like a nun.

I simply do not get the way they arrange these tournaments. Sonic versus Devil May Cry? I voted for Sonic here, but I wouldn't have if the opposition had been Shining Force or Phantasy star.

I think it has to skew the results, the way they pair up franchises like this instead of pitting everything against everything else simultaneously.

Or maybe I just haven't thought it through enough to see that it's logical. I dunno...I'm tired. :p

I agree its a little weird, but i don't think Sonic will win this. Its either gonna be Final Fantasy, Super Smash Bros (Seris? It has 2 damn games thats hardly a seris), or Super Mario Bros.

I was going to say my favourite series is Sonic The Hedgehog, but the recent games have given the series a bad name. I still love Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic 3k, and Sonic CD, and don't mind the two adventure games.

After thinking about it, I guess my favourite game series would be the Panzer Dragoon games. None of the games are bad, and the series went from strength to strength. Ok, so Mini wasn't great, but considering the hardware limitation of the Game Gear, it's quite a technical feat.

I do realise this is Sega-16, which deals with Sega's 16-bit hardware, and that a Panzer Dragoon game never apperared on the Mega Drive or it's upgrades. But apart from the Sonic series, I never had the chance to enjoy any other series of 16-bit games thanks to my limited funds back in the early 90s. Hopefully this will change as I build up my Mega Drive collection in the future.

I really donīt understand what youīve all got against Final Fantasy; Iīve played all parts except III, XI and XII and theyīre all just great: graphics are excellent, Soundtracks are very good too and thereīs lot of innivative ideas in almost every game of the series. FF X-2 may not have been that great, but it was fun to play as well and you have to give Square regards for trying something new and not just producing kind of an add-on for FF X.

But weīre at Sega-16.com here, so this seems to be the wrong place for a discussion like that.
Personally I think those best series ever are nonsense anyway. How do you want to compare Sonic with Devil May Cry???

I belive the best series ever should go to The Legend of Zelda, just because it IS Zelda

@fruitsofherwomb

If Final Fantasy games are mediocore at best then please tell me a series that has got better storylines, different magic systems in almost every part, an atmosphere that really letīs you feel like a part of the story, great soundtracks and last but not least great graphics!!!
Iīm a Final Fantasy-fanboy for a reason. Iīve played lotīs of RPGs (Breath of Fire-series, Phantasy Star-series, Chrono-series, Dragon Quest-series, Suikoden-series, SaGa Frontier 2, Langrisser 1 & 2, Grandia 1 & 2, Star Ocean-series, Wild Arms, Lunar, Vermillon, Vagrant Story etc...) and nothing even comes close.
Some games can compete in the way of graphics, some in the way of soundtracks, or whatever, but no game has it all at once like FF does.

Many game-series start out great but after the first two titles or so they get weaker and weaker. Final Fantasy changes more than any other series I know from part to part, and though people might prefer one part over the other because of personal preferences, but every part of FF is great in itīs own way!

Stating Final Fantasy was mediocore isnīt fair, those millions of people buying the games donīt spend their money for no reason.
Maybe youīre just not into good stories and complex battle-systems, so Diablo 2 (a good game as well) covers everything you want from an RPG for you.

Well, since you just admitted that your an FF fanboy, 108 Stars, there's not much point in me reasoning with you. =)

But I'll at least explain why I vote against Final Fantasy at every opportunity. Here's why: it's not that they're bad games. In fact, they're good RPGs and have some awesome cutscenes. It's because hordes of people think they're some sort of religious experience and are rabidly, illogically dedicated to them at the expense of all other games. This is so laughably absurd that I simply cannot allow myself to side with Final Fantasy.

The same is true for Kingdom Hearts, to a lesser degree.

 Now thatīs something I can live with.
My problem with fruitsofherwombīs comments was that he just called the games mediocore without even explaining what it is he doesnīt like about them.

But donīt worry, although I am a big Final Fantasy-fan, itīs not like I canīt discuss the matter.

Some of the FF games were good although most were somewhat better than mediocre. But that all changed with FF7 which has got to be one of the worst games I have ever played. Early 3D graphics haven't aged that well with me, but since that's the same with all early 3D games I won't condemm FF7 for it. But yeah, it all went downhill entirely from there, only occassionally turning up another mediocre title.

Oh, and the series had practically no cohesion in it.

That´s interesting.
I gues that you raeally prefer old-school RPGs after all, judging from your statement that the series went down rhe drain starting with part 7.
It´s funny because the cult-like fellowship of Final Fantasy really started with that particular game, it´s were the "break" between traditional top-down 2D RPG and the cinematic, eyecatching Monster-RPG happened;
characters were suddenly "deeper", letting not so much of your own personality inside, for the benefit of a much more dramatic, Hollywood-like style of storytelling. The stories became less naive by that time.
The strict difference between worldmap, town and dungeon began to cease by that time and you did not always have a real quest to do, but things just happened surprisingly.
And last but not least the focus was taken off the individual character-training; the difficulty-level went down and skills were no longer strictly attached to a single "specialist".

Well, although I love Final Fantasy (especially all parts from 7 on) I can still find enjoiment in old-school RPGs too; that´s why I´m still playing Beggar Prince or old Dragon Warrior-games. But I would never compare, like, Dragon Quest 5 to Final Fantasy X. In my Eyes they are totally different genres. When you want to rate a game you have to consider whom it was made for. Just because it is obviously not your prefered style of game doesn´t make it mediocore. It must be compared to it´s own kind.
And in the ranks of cinematic, highly dramatical and emotional RPGs Final Fantasy sit´s on it´s righteous throne. And most people prefer this kind of modern day RPG.
A great many classics were made in the old days, and I love them too. But they are nostalgia. I would not spend the 70,-€ I spent on FF X on an RPG that seems to come from 1992.
Final Fantasy games have a many positive sides: good battle systems; innovative skill systems; outstanding graphics; good sountracks; (most of the time) interesting characters and emotional, not so predictable stories, and those are well told. FF-games are the only ones whose stories sucked me in so deep that I even shed a tear or two in the end.
They are mainly missing the liberty to explore the world like you want it, they are too linear. But you can immpossibly have the freedom to do what you want in FF; that´s the price for a good storyline.

PS: Sorry, I´m not a native speaker. What does the word "cohesion" mean?

...FF7 which has got to be one of the worst games I have ever played.

I agree with you 100%. I remember the day I got my FF7 in the mail. Oh man I just couldn't wait. I heard it's the greatest game ever made and the story is simply amazing. I played FF6 earlier and simply loved it and that was my favorite game at the time. But hey... if FF7 is the greatest game, think how much better than FF6 it could be. I also owned FF8 which I found to be enjoyable as well so I thought hey it's FF so it can't go wrong.

Anyway, I pop it in and I sit there for a few hours bored out of my ass. I chuckle once or twice at Barret's stereotypical angry-black-man-cursing-all-the-time and Cid telling people to shut the hell up and drink their tea. Other than that the humor was immature. The graphics were horrendous but I'm not a graphics whore so I could care less. The story was simply retarded. Seriously, Cloud should get arrested for identity theft. How much of a loser would you have to be to end up like Cloud? I liked retarded Clouds nonsense ramblings and wished he stood that way. I never found any moment of enjoyment in the game. It was just simply boring with about after you're halfway through the first CD, events with the storyline kept being getting more scarce. I remember snowboarding in Disc 2 more than I remember anything plot related. It was just a bad game.

I was a huge fan of the FF series until I got older and finally beat 8 and was just disgusted at the retarded romantic storyline. It was too unrealistic and it seemed everyone was pushing Squall to love Rinoa so he just said "fuck it... why not?" Just too rushed. The rest of the story was lame. The junction system was heavily flawed seeing as how I could obtain 99 curaga before the end of disc 1 and junction it all to strength being uber powerful.

10... please don't even get me started there.

I however loved 4, 5, 6, and Tactics. 6 and Tactics are perhaps my favorite video games of all time tied with Fallout 1 and 2. 6 was just simply breathtaking. Amazing storyline (without much cliche) with no main character. Tactics was very unique with an amazing storyline as well. I was blown away with Tactics. I bought it much later after I beat 7 and 8 and I wasn't expecting much but good thing I bought it...

What I have against FF7 is that it's hyped up to be the second coming and is actually terrible. Most of the characters start out kind of interesting, but in the end don't really work seeing that FF games are soap opera's by nature. Then there's the wonderful story. I hate the story. It starts out ok with some interesting ideas, but when you get past the beginning it doesn't make any sense if you take it all as one package. And I do like complex stories. For example, a game of the same era, SF3. I love that game and it's plot was complicated for the time.

Hell, it could even be confusing today if I hadn't played it so much. All that FF7 had to it's name was great graphics and that really doesn't cut it for me. As for cohesion, that basically is used to say that the FF games don't link together very much. I mean you'll pick up small bits and pieces here and there, but they really are each seperate games from each other.

Well, it just shows how different people can experience a game.
For example FF X is my favourite videogame of all time, the junction-magic-system is my favourite magic-system and I love the stories, especially the one of part 10 (and: no, I do not like soap operas at all). I agree that the story of part 8 is not the best of the series, but itīs still okay I think. In my eyes the stories of Final Fantasy tend to get better the longer the game takes...
If I compare them to the other "great RPGs" of the time since FFVII, I cannot say Iīve played anything equal: Grandia 1 was a close one, 2 was only mediocore in my opinion. Star Ocean always comes close in stories and gameplay, but it lacks atmosphere. Chrono-games have great graphics but boring charas. Suikoden 2 was excellent in story, character design, size, originality and sountrack, but it didnīt have the graphics, the sequels were weaker in all ways...

In the end, itīs all a matter of personal taste. Personally I almost fell asleep when I tried to get into the Fallout games. And although I loved Final Fantasy Tactics, the story never appeared as a strong point of the game to me. As for Shining Force 3, I never owned a Saturn, so I canīt tell.

I would just prefer a more moderate tone when critizising a game, because tastes are just different. Just saying "game x is the worst game ever" sounds a bit harsh when it goes against such a popular game; it kind of brands all customers, fans and reviewers as unknowing fools. If you say the game doesnīt appeal to you, thatīs okay. Though I donīt like any of the Fallout-games one bit, Iīm aware that many people do like them, so I would not call them bad games-just not my personal kind of game.

Demonic Weasel

I wouldn't mind just saying that it doesn't appeal to me, but I have had such trouble getting through to people before that if I start off with the harsh statement it's actually likely to capture their attention. Heh. And anyway Shining Force is a better series. So there.

FF games are mediocore at best.

FF peaked about a decade ago.

Square has never impressed me as much as they did in the 16-bit days.

Megaman>Mario Kart

There isn't a Mega Man game that's as great as the original Mario Kart. The rest of the MK games have all been retarded "updates" (an oxymoron) to the original purity of concept and execution -- each sequel made easier and more accessible for casuals -- but the original has not been topped as far its sub-genre, and it is overall one of the best racers ever released.

I was going to say my favourite series is Sonic The Hedgehog, but the recent games have given the series a bad name. I still love Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic 3k, and Sonic CD, and don't mind the two adventure games.

The problem is that there hasn't been a game connected to that original series since 1994. From that standpoint, Sonic is one of the great franchises that has been forgotten -- at least if we're considering the original notion and overall uniformity of the character and series.

Where is the blazingly fast, green hill-zoned, Sonic-centric sequel to those early 90s classics? It doesn't exist.

It's not surprising. Sega has always been great at innovative new concepts, but they're pretty lackluster at keeping their iconic franchises meaningfully alive for more than a generation of hardware. VF, Panzer Dragoon and OutRun are fine exceptions to that previous avowal, but contrast that list to all that have been forgotten or mistreated.

Obviously

Agreed. I'm not an authority on RPG's or anything but even I know enough to say that Final Fantasy totally crashed and burned after part VI.

The toppling of Castlevania at the hands of Kingdom Hearts yesterday was a little depressing. I had not realized just how popular Kingdom Hearts must be.

The last original console Castlevania game came out in what? 1997? Everything since has been on portables. Kingdom Hearts is a Square/Disney franchise with a number of popular characters and in 3-D. Honestly, the way these things work, I could feasibly see it taking the top spot, though I do believe Nintendo has enough fans to give Mario/Link the win, but it'd be a race for certain.

It is a depressing contest though. I recall one a couple of years or so ago having Pac-Man lose in an early bracket to... I think Devil May Cry. That's just so very wrong. :(

07-22-2006, 03:18 PM
There were the two PS2 Castlevanias, but yeah, I suppose the popularity of the Castlevania franchise has dwindled, at least to the point where it can be overtaken by a Johnny-come-lately Square-Enix two-parter (too... many... hyphens!). At any rate, the contest is pretty well meaningless. Well, what it does do is demonstrate that there are a lot of modern gamers who are ignorant to the greatness of anything but the current gen, and while that's too bad, it's nothing new.

Just remarking how sad it is that Sonic the Hedgehog loses out to Super Smash Bros. :( GameFAQs has always been Nintendo fan heavy based on past polls and whatnot, but it's still somewhat saddening to see. Granted all things are subjective, but Smash Bros.? Two party minded fighting games out "Best. Series. Ever(s)." a franchise with dozens of titles? :(

As depressing as these results are, it's hardly surprising considering where it's posted. GameFAQs is always either Final Fantasy (Roman numeral) Town or Mario-Land. Not Segaville :(
