View Full Version : My Sega CD impressions.

Let's take into consideration the US Sega CD scene for a moment. Forget imports, and let's mostly forget the titles that are just amped up ports of Genesis games. Now...correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't these pretty much the only games deserving of a purchase? I mean, you'd pick up others in the wild if you saw them, sure. But these are the only ones most people would actively pursue, no?
Advanced Dungeons and Dragons - Eye of the Beholder
Android Assault - The Revenge of Bari-Arm
Dark Wizard
Dungeon Explorer
Eternal Champions - Challenge from the Dark Side
Farenheit
Fatal Fury Special
Final Fight CD
Ground Zero Texas
Heart of the Alien
Heimdall
Keio Flying Squadron
Lethal Enforcers
Lunar 1
Lunar 2
Panic!
Popful Mail - Magical Fantasy Adventure
RDF - Global Conflict
Robo Aleste
Sewer Shark
Shining Force
Silpheed
Snatcher
Sonic CD
Soul Star
Star Blade
Star Wars - Rebel Assault
Stellar Fire
Surgical Strike
Thunderstrike
Vay
Wing Commander
I'm just thinking about finally buying a Sega CD, and I'm trying to get a list of how many titles I'll want to chase down.

I would stay far, far away from these games that are on your list:
Eternal Champions - Challenge from the Dark Side - Playing wth the controller is about as useful as playing without any controller. Also some of the worst graphics ever.
Farenheit - FMV game, but at least it comes with the godly "better than high definition" 32X version.
Ground Zero Texas - FMV game. Sucks.
Heimdall - There are very few games in the world that are more horrible than this one.
Lethal Enforcers - Too ugly. I think there are only a maximum of 6 colors onscreen. Very grainy even though it is not FMV. An insult to people with eyeballs.
Sewer Shark - One of the worst FMV games ever. One color is used... BROWN.
Star Wars - Rebel Assault - Only buy this piece of crap if slitting your wrists is too comfortable for you.
Stellar Fire - If you hate good gameplay, decipherable graphics and good sound, this is the game for you!
Wing Commander - I'd rather have Hepatitus B. It's far more fun.

You left off some of my favorite Sega CD games:
Adventures of Willy Beamish
Battlecorps
Dune
Rise of the Dragon
Terminator
Time Gal
Also, Heimdall is great. Joe's opinion is wrong.

I'm sure there's going to be a bit of variation in lists due to personal opinion, but I'm pretty confident now that I've gotten at least the majority of the good ones in mind.
Sort of surprised at some of your opinions, Joe. Most people liked Ground Zero and Sewer Shark. (Also Heimdall and Rebel Assault.) But taking a closer look at Wing Commander, Stellar Fire, Lethal Enforcers, and Fahrenheit, however... I agree with you.
I checked out yours, JFactor, and I liked the looks of some of them. (Don't go for digital comics.)

As long as you collect the godly coolness that are the RPG's for this system I will forgive you any other purchase.

Also, Heimdall is great. Joe's opinion is wrong.
The game doesn't even take advantage of the system and has horrible controls. It belongs on a computer along with all crappy games, not a real game system. I remember trying to get past the very first scene. Couldn't be done. If memory serves I kept falling into a hole of some kind. The first scene should be a bit more straightforward than that. I'd rather have west nile virus.

I would recommend staying far away from the PC ports and the FMV games.

I agree:
DO NOT BUY ANY FMV GAMES.
FMV GAMES ARE EVIL.
ONLY 64 COLOURS.
SMALL WINDOW.
NO GAMEPLAY.
LIKE DRAGON´S LAIR.
JUST SAY "NO!" TO FMV!
I´m new to the Sega-online communities, but I cannot imagine a single sane human being really likes Ground Zero and Sewer Shark. If someone says these are enjoyable games, I suppose he is one of the guys who originally bought it and suffered some serious brain-damage from playing it. People like that want revenge on the world.
Do not follow the dark side of the force, young Genesis Knight!

Most FMV games I've seen use only 16 colors on the screen at one time.

But...but...Ground Zero Texas is supposed to be so good! And they spent 3 million on it. That means it MUST be the best game ever. *stumbles towards the darkness* O_x

The only FMV game worth anything is Night Trap, both due to the stupid Senate controversy but also because it actually plays well and makes good use of the FMV. The problem is that you really do spend so much time switching from room to room that you never get a chance to enjoy the FMV, so it kinda ruins the point of it.
Everything else built around FMV on the system is largely garbage. :(

I don't see how Sewer Shark is that horrible. It uses FMV, but it has "real gameplay" because you're still shooting stuff in real time.
In addition, Road Avenger is pretty damn good. And it's an FMV game.
Also, Dragon's Lair fucking rocks. The Sega CD version isn't so hot, but it's a great game.
I also think Cliffhanger is a great FMV game, although it was unfortunately never on Sega CD.

Road Avenger and Time Gal are the only ones I could stand to play. I could never really get into FMV games. After a while I'd get tired of playing the game, and I'd just want to watch the video.

The only thing good about Road Avenger and Dragonīs Lair was the graphics. Unfortunately there were no real games behind.

This is my problem with those games. They can be enjoyable for sure, but pressing a button when prompted over a FMV playback doesn't excite me. Well, unless it's Panic! :)

I don't think Panic had any FMV in it, but I understand your meaning. That game be so wacky!! :)

I loved Night Trap. It's so cheesy, it transcends cheesiness into a whole new layer of dairy products. It's not cheese, it's cream.
...I'm hungry :/
AfterBurner 3 wasn't too bad, either. The game itself played slowly at times, but the soundtrack is great.

Hey, I think you just created a new paradigm in phraseology. =D
