So, being the nerd I am, I regularly check out the Speed Demos Archive (http://speeddemosarchive.com/) for awesome speed runs. (For those of you who have never heard of such thing, a speed run is beating a game as fast as you possibly can.)

Anywho, I went on over to the Genesis section to notice that they have a grand total of 12 Genesis speed runs, and only one Sonic run.

12! Now, I may still be a n00b here, but something tells me that the good peoples of Sega-16 might be able to increase that number a bit. (And for those lucky ones that have Sega CDs and 32Xs, there is only one Sega CD run, and there aren't any 32X runs.)

So, I think it's time to whip out my old Genesis and try a run myself. Anyone else interested in doing one?

I'd love to, but my skills are so bad now that mine would take your entire HDD to record. :p

There are plenty more Genesis speed runs out there than just 12. Search Google, and they'll turn up. Even the Shinobi III speed run capsule details an earlier run of the same game. I know I've seen speed runs of all the Sonic games before.

The only game I know well enough to even consider doing a run would be Gunstar Heroes, Strider, and Sonic 2, and I just don't have the willpower or time to repeat games dozens if not hundreds of times just to shave a few seconds off my time. Still fun to watch the results of others who go through all that stress though. :)

This Sonic 2 Aquatic Ruin play through is really impressive. The times are amazing to me along with the techniques, and he's not even really playing seriously for a great time.

Wow. That guy's a Sonic master. I don't think I've ever seen such skilled playing. I think I have seen if faster, though, but only because the people in question didn't stop to get powerups and pull of awesome tricks.

I hope this wasn't a sped-up video of someone playing on a reduced speed emulator, though.

I actually saw a video of Sonic 2 on an overclocked Genesis. It wasn't any faster, but it wsa much smoother and there wasn't any slowdown. It was pretty cool, guy gets about 40 rings, than runs into an enemy, and no slowdown! Smooth as silk.

That's pretty insane. I was wondering why he was going back at some points, but man, some of the distance on those jumps was crazy. I too haven't got the time or patience to do that. There's some more on youtube that I want to look at after.

How is it that Dark Castle can be beaten that quickly? I didn't see any glitch-use.

The Aquatic Ruin boss fight made me smile. (Act 2 was much more clever than Act 1, which seemed pointless.)

I like to watch tool-assisted speed runs (http://www.tasvideos.org). They don't reflect anyone's actual playing skill, but then, they never claim to, and it's really entertaining to watch the game played flawlessly.

I spent ages downloading this Alien Soldier run through once, when I played it the video didn't show up. :@

Normally I don't care for tool assisted stuff, but considering just how difficult a game Chakan is, it's nice to see someone slap it around a bit. :)

Alex Kidd in six minutes. Altered Beast I can understand, but I'm surprised that the game can be raced through so quickly. Of course it's tool assisted and abuses luck, but still... using the motorcycle on the sea level is really interesting to see.

Another tool assisted perfect run of a "perfect" game. :) Bomb detonates in 24 hours, but it only takes Spider-Man seven minutes to beat the Kingpin. :)

Kid Chameleon does have an end. 103 levels in 14 minutes.

Lots more on YouTube, too. (http://www.youtube.com/results?search_type=related&search_sort=relevance&search_query=GEN+Genesis+SEGA&search=Search)
