What games are the honourable residents of this board currently playing?
I've been dungeoncrawling my way through Phantasy Star II off and on for awhile now, and just yesterday I picked up Flipnic: Ultimate Pinball for the PS2. Really an inventive take on pinball.. I'm very much enjoying it so far. I finished off Silent Hill 4 not too long ago and am planning to delve into Silent Hill 2 once I find the time. Good ol' ignoring of franchise chronology..
So yes, the questions stands: what gaming madness do you find yourselves involved in?
I'm currently enthralled with RE4, but I just started playing Demon Stone on the Xbox, and am really liking it. Good, old-fashioned hack-'n-slashing with a real simple interface.
I still have X-Men Legends, KOTOR II, Paper Mario 2, and Metroid Prime 2 waiting for me. :help:

I think it's about time to resurrect this thread. Over a month without a post...!? C'mon, games are being played out there, I know it!
World Heroes 2 for SNES is robbing much of my game time, as are the Genesis ruffians Mystic Defender and Demolition Man.
World Heroes 2, while a shameless SFII clone in many respects, possesses a certain spark of originality that sets it apart from other the other fisticuff plagiarists of the early '90s. There is a coolness about Survival Matches where you share a life bar with your opponent and level hazards pose serious threats to your well-being. As well, special move motions that travel beyond the standard quarter-circles and charging make for the forging of new strategies. There shockingly is only one punch and one kick, but there's a surprising amount you can do with such a minimalist control scheme. ..and as if to top it all off, you can play as Rasputin. Awesome.
Demolition Man's actually pretty cool.. I'm frankly amazed at how much I'm enjoying it. I never gave it much of a chance before, but recently I've been working my way through several Genesis run-'n'-guns and this one is considerably entertaining. Fast, abundant action.. yessir.
Mystic Defender I find I keep coming back to. Fun, solid game.

I test games all the time since I get so many in, and I got a bunch backlogged, but as to actually playing through them it doesn't happen as much as I would like.
I had been playing Panzer Dragoon Saga, Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne (PS2), Devil May Cry 3 (PS2), and Ninja Gaiden (Xbox) last week and would like to get back to them but Darkwatch (Xbox), The Suffering (Xbox), and Sam & Max via ScummVMx (Emu-Xbox) have had me enthralled this week.
P.S. While playing Sly Cooper (PS2) the other night I got so into the game that I ended up missing out on an eBay auction for a Saturn & 10 CIB games including Astal, Panzer Dragoon 1&2, and some shooters. It sold for $33.00! ARGH!

I'm currently working through Light Crusader, which I'm nearly finished with, Shining in the Darkness and Jewel Master all for the Genny. I will write reviews for these games as I finish them. I already wrote a review for Zombies Ate My Neighbors and want to write a few more Genesis reviews before I start on some Sega CD reviews.

Is World Heroes 2 worth $20 loose? or is it too much?
I think for that amount you'll feel burned by the purchase. $10 or so would be far more reasonable.. I mean, I recently got my copy off Ebay for $1.25 + $4.00 shipping and handling. It's a neat game, but $20 loose is a bit much.
Vicman
08-26-2005, 04:55 PM
$20 loose or complete is WAAAYYYY too much for any World Heroes game. I'd pay $5 tops for the complete copy, $2 for a loose one.

Sweet Jesus, $5 complete? Vicman, you must come from a land where used SNES games are as abundant as fish in the sea.

Thanks Drixxel, after seeing what you paid for it I would of felt robbed. Just about all the good SNES games they sell at the swapmeet are $20 for loose. Those bastards don't want to negotiate.

I realize that. It just struck me as an uncommonly low estimate of the game's value.
It's both. You guys should realize that I'm a notoriously cheap-ass gamer. I don't like paying much for games in general. While I've got some fun memories playing World Heroes the most I'd pay for it complete would be $5, maybe $7 tops. Considering that the most I'd pay for a complete copy of Street Fighter 2 (SNES) would be $15 then you can understand why any of its knockoffs, even good ones, would only rank as being worth half as much to me.
Drixxel
08-27-2005, 06:55 PM
Fair enough. I'm happy enough paying $10 a cart-only game or there abouts, as long as it's an in-person purchase. As cool as Ebay is, there's so much about online auctions that I hate. Paying cash in-store is worth the possible extra money simply for the sake of convenience.
I finished playing through Golden Axe mere moments ago. Death Adder is such a cheap bastard. Limitless unblockable magic attacks? Right on.

For the past couple days I've been playing the NES games I acquired at CGE on the Super 8 I acquired at CGE. Most of these games I haven't played in years.
Kirby's Adventure is exactly how I remember it, which is to say, too easy. I haven't played it in years, but I beat the final boss with 28 lives remaining. Still fun though.
Adventures of Lolo is way more frustrating than I remembered. I still like the basic design of the game, but each level pisses me off more than the previous.
Snake Rattle n' Roll, I have no idea why I used to like. It's a stupid, annoying game with weird controls and frustrating deaths.
Strider for NES I haven't played since around 1991, though I already own the Genesis game. It's a decent action game, though it feels unnecessarily un-striderlike with the small sword and lack of acrobatics/moves. The sound is really grating too.
Rolling Thunder is one game I've never played until just now, though back in the day I owned both Genesis sequels and loved them. The original is harder and has kind of stilted controls, but other than that it's pretty damn good.
NARC I have really fond memories of, but I think my memories are mostly of the arcade version. The NES version has very poor hit detection and the controls are a little off.
Bionic Commando I don't really remember very well. I feel a bit stifled by not being able to jump, aim, or move midair. Other than that it's good.
Ninja Gaiden and Ninja Gaiden 2 are as I remember them, difficult and fun. Although I don't remember having to be quite so precise with my attacks. Maybe that's because I used to play it for SMS.
Clash at Demonhead is exactly like I remember it. Which is to say, awesome and enthralling.

Been playing Suikoden a lot lately.
Loving the soundtrack and story, but the gameplay is a bit unpolished. . .but not too badly
Vicman
09-13-2005, 05:54 PM
What I loved about Suikoden on the PS1/2 was taking the save from 1 to 2 to 3 and having the extra characters, story tie ins, and other additions that made playing the games in succession worth it. Too bad they stopped that with 4, but since 4 royally sucked it's probably not that big of a deal.
Suikoden 1 & 2 are awesome rpg's they are my favorites. Good thing I got a chance to play them and finish them. I also like how the story continues using the save data that was cool and original.

Shining Force 3 also inspired the trinity system in Suikoden III. . .which is a severely under-rated RPG.

Heart of the Alien.. that's one cool game. Moments ago I was contemplating firing up Out Of This World..
My gaming time over the past week has been dredged in F-Zero X goodness. Pure racing cool, it is.. I've been having an amazing amount of fun in Time Attack mode. After having gotten back into this game, that $20 Canadian copy of F-Zero GX at Wal-Mart is looking ever more sexy.
I'm trying to get into Morrowind again, for the Xbox. It's all too tedious to start from scratch so I'm using the advance skill trick. Once I'm ready, I'll upgrade to the GOTY edition, so I can play the cool expansion packs.

I was playing Midway Arcade Treasures 3, then I was called in to work, came home pissed, ate dinner, finshed my gay home work, and played some.
I've had a bad day so this was good to come home to. Having the Dreamcast versions of Hydro Thunder and Rush 2049 on the xbox is sweet. It's a decent compltation but the port of the original SF Rush could be a little bit better.
Not bad for $20. I think the second one is cheap at the pawn shop, I bought the first when it came out.. Lots of good games I've missed on the Xbox. Some day I'll give it the attention I give my older systems.

Between Bombastic binges, I started up a game in Super Metroid with the intention of, ehh.. doing things a little differently. Early super missiles, skipped Spore Spawn entirely, collected powerbombs before ever entering Norfair, killed Kraid before getting high-jump boots, and then worked through Maridia without the gravity suit in order to get into the Wrecked Ship's backdoor before fighting Phantoon. There was really no point to any of it.. just something to do. I'd never gone on that particular Maridia adventure before.. without the gravity suit, there are some tight moments, let me tell you.
Also played a bit of Doom 64 here and there, but Bombastic's been eating most of my time.

Harmony starts off very promising, gets better, but then it drags on when you're just filling in the maps. I mean, technically that's what you're doing from the start, but when it gets to the point that all you're doing is visiting the opposite version of rooms you've been to, it becomes kind of a chore, especially with the way transportation between the two castles is.

Worked through to the end of Bonk's Adventure yesterday as well, but misfortune struck in the form of a frustrating final boss attack pattern that I just couldn't seem to work around.

If you liked the first two, there's no way that King's Field: The Ancient City would disappoint. I'm ten hours into it so far and it's just amazing. Get it, Melf - get it!
But yeah, it's too bad that the King's Field series has never really gotten much North American attention.. I'd account that to the slow pace of the games more than anything. I myself didn't quite "get it" until a couple of hours into King's Field 2, but after that, I was hooked. I wish I hadn't sold King's Field 1 all those years ago, as I'd really like to play through it now with my current appreciation of the series.
Still, it would seem enough people like it to keep the sequels a-flowin'. In fact, there's been a King's Field announced for the PSP, although no information exists beyond that.
At any rate, I think I'll go back to the ol' Ancient City right about now.

Yes Melf, due to the merger Sega absorbed all of Sammy's properties including FIST OF THE NORTHSTAR that Sammy had the license to. The first game of FOTNS Sega released was an "remake" to the original Master System game Sega made. Then came the Panchinko version that made mega yen for Sega. it wasn't until november when sega unveiled the arcade version that had been developed by Arc Systems of GUILTY GEAR fame. I gots me a human male, a mutant female, a robot, and of course the token meat eating beast, which is currently a Sprite (Sleep, Thunder, Cure, strong against quake).

I gots me a human male, a mutant female, a robot, and of course the token meat eating beast, which is currently a Sprite (Sleep, Thunder, Cure, strong against quake).
I just finished with Edo and stopped. Not quite ready for the Nasty Dungeon. My party consists of two robots, a mutant male, and a monster, who is currently a Nymph (like Sprite, but higher level, has Ice and Whirl in addition to those abilities). I'm rather fond of that class of monsters, definitely the best ones in the game IMO.
SECRET TIP: (semi-spoiler but not really - don't read if you don't want to be helped :P)
(also, it's only applicable if your monster is still a sprite)
In the sewers of Venus City, there is a Hermit that you have to battle. You can fight it multiple times by exiting and re-entering the room. Feed your sprite the meat of this hermit. Give your monster the hermit meat again, and then once more. IE, your monster, originally a sprite, should eat hermit meat three times. On the third, it'll become a hermit. With your monster as a hermit, feed it regular o-bake meat, and it will turn into a fairy. A fairy is like a sprite but a level higher -- higher stats and it adds the ability of Ice.
Believe it or not, I actually figured that out myself, years ago. Getting my monster to be a nymph early on also required a little secret trick I know.. but it's after Venus's World.

That's a useful meat eating process, j_factor, and I will undoubtedly give'r a go. Thanks!
I've never had a Sprite as a monster before.. it's been bloody useful to have a monster that can operate roughly on par with the other members of my party. I remember in playthroughs previous I'd always shoot for an O-Bake, regardless of where I was in the game. Needless to say, I was once an idiot, and possibly still to this day as it's only just now while writing this message that I've realized that O-Bake is supposed to be pronounced Oh-Ba-Ke and not Oh-BAKE. Ah jeez..
It was only a few years ago that I finally began to get a better understanding of the system for monster evolution, right about the time I came across a helpful monster evolution FAQ. Before that, through trial and error I'd figured out a few paths of meat that would get my monster to a rockin' state (although nothing as clever as that Sprite to Fairy mutation), but even earlier than that I assumed that if I fed the meat of an awesome beast to my monster enough times, it would eventually transform into it. Still.. the game itself doesn't clear up the issue of meat in the slightest, so I can see why I was so clueless.
At any rate, awesome game.

j_factor, the Hermit feast with the O-Bake dessert worked like a charm. That is rather an ingenius routine.. must have been a very rewardingly random discovery.
I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with my Sprite, so Sprite mk. 2 does the job nicely.

Just finished playing Magician Lord on the Neo Geo. I love it. I am incredibly addicted to that game for some reason despite how challenging it is (note I said "challenging", not "hard"). I love challenging. I also played a bit of Fatal Fury 2, also on the Neo. I really suck at it even on easy despite that I'm usually fairly good at fighters, so I don't care much for this game. But I am REALLY loving the Neo Geo CD control pad (using it on the AES). It's like the Neo Geo Pocket Color stick, only for the real Neo Geo!

I got Revenge of Shinobi in the mail, and it's not the Batman version. Even if it doesn't have the Marvel screen you still might get fucked. The easiest way to check is, go to level three, if the Rambo looking dudes are bald, you won't have batman, so there is no need to defeat Spiderman to check.
Or you could buy Super Shinobi and you might have a 100% chance. I hope that helps someone, and I bet Joe is laughing at me. :P

I'm not laughing. I was also thinking about the Super Shinobi thing, but I'm not 100% sure. Also I should have made my last post in the Haul thread. So I think I will. Huzzah!

If you get to level three and the Rambo-looking dudes are bald, then it won't have Batman. The copy I got in the mail has a canadian/european manual and they suck!
I'd buy Super Shinobi, but I am anal about my copy being in a Genesis cart and Genesis label.
Joe Redifer
04-29-2006, 09:20 PM
Well you could always open up the cartridge and put the ROM inside a Genesis casing! The title screen would probably even say "Revenge of Shinobi" on a US Genesis! You'll just need the proper tool to open the US carts.
David J.
04-29-2006, 09:27 PM
Hmm... now if only I could find a cheap super shinobi cart. You can make the tool to open Genesis carts. Just take a hollowed out bic pen, put it over an open flame for a few seconds, then cram it cart where the screw is, and you should have a ghetto gamebit. The guy who wrote Kega created that method of a Gamebit.
Oh yeah, it would say Revenge of Shinobi on a US system.

I've been plugging away at Mega Man Legends 2 more than anything else lately, but over the past week I've more or less put that aside. I had a severe Tempest 2000 craving last night and logged a fair bit of time on the webs of Tempest X after work. I'd almost forgotten how much I love that game. I'm playing Okage: The Shadow King at the moment. I dunno how I missed this one. Sure, the battle system is boring and the camera is a bit...schizophrenic, but otherwise it has everything I love in an RPG. Namely, weirdness. Ironman XO Manowar on Sega Saturn.
I don't think the game is the most awful game out there, but it is playable. If you can put the lame digitalized graphics and license behind, it's OK at best. Finding a cheap copy was kind of rough, every copy on ebay was a bit too much for my tastes.
The disc is in AWFUL condition, but it plays 100%
Still trucking away at Final Fantasy V Advance. Man, I'm am hooked. Hooked like a bass. I want to master every Job with every character, complete the Beastary, and even take down Shinryu and Omega. I actually mastere the Mime Class with everyone. Never did that the first time I played FFV. Mime skill is broken. :D
Of course I'll be getting in some Genesis action tomorrow since I FINALLY found a copy of MUSHA and Dynamite Heady.
I need to get back to Castlevania: SOTN, too. I'm in the upside down castle. Even the regular enemies here are tough.

Really? How much does it usually go for? I got lucky when I went out on Friday. Never expected to find MUSHA out of the blue like that. Along with Dynamite Heady, my total was only $18. 86. But I used $7 in store credit and I get a discount there as well.

I picked up Valkyrie Profile 2 with a Circuit City gift card the other day. My thoughts thus far? The story and characters don't seem to be anything special so far, but the setting is pretty cool (who doesn't like Japanified Norse mythology?), and the gameplay is the best I've encountered in an RPG since 2005's awesome Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time. Side scrolling teleportation puzzles ahoy!
Castlevania: SOTN. I beat Death, the Doppleganer, Beelzebub, and some other boss I can't rember and have well over 500 HP. This is actually my first time playing through the inverted castle.

Once I got into San Andreas I did feel it was the best of all the GTA series thus far and was really involved with it up until the school missions (although the car missions are positively enjoyable when compared to the plane). I imagine the game will be just as awesome afterwards, however, at the moment playing it feels like I'm running into a brick wall.

Recently, I picked up Sega Genesis Collection on PS2 (which rekindled my enthusiasm for Genesis, and may ultimately be the reason why I'm here...). Played that non stop for a few days.
Been playing various PS1 games on my PSP. Intelligent Qube mostly. Just played through Super Metroid again last week. Beat the original Castlevania (for the first time, I might add) last night. Also making my way through Metal Gear Solid 3. And as usual, there is a healthy mix of Neo Geo games in the rotation as well, which, at the moment, include: Mark of the Wolves, World Heroes Perfect, King of Fighters '99, Twinkle Star Sprites and Magician Lord... Having a blast gaming these days.
