I am trying to find a list of the games available ONLY on MegaDrive (and not genesis). I am trying to see if it is worth purchasing a converter cart.

Here are two games not available in the USA:

The Ottifants.
Only released as a PAL-version for sure. Itīs a jumpīn run based on a popular German comedianīs comic strips.
Zero Wing
Only available in Japan and Europe; the English texts of the PAL-version make it better than the japanese one...

But come to think of it, why donīt you look at Sega-16īs Master list???

Wikipedia has two separate articles; "List of Genesis Games" and "List of Megadrive Games" or something to that effect. It's not 100% foolproof as I've found some Megadrive games not listed there, but it should give the basic idea.

i was a european wanting to play US release games..i tried for ages to find a decent nitro cart, and they always seemed to go for more then i was willing to pay. so instead, i bought a genesis mark 3 from ebay.com. small and light so didnt cost me much on shipping. why dont you just import a megadrive mark 2 from europe? you'll get to see the magnificent 50hz letterbox screen format in action too!..........

No need for that. The games that won't run directly on a Genny can be "cheated" with a 50/60 Hz switch, if you have the nerve to modify your machine. Start the game in 50 Hz, wait for the SEGA-logo to pop up and then switch back to 60 Hz... easy as that :)

Xenon 2 is the only game that screws up, when it runs in 60 Hz.(as far as I know)

Flink came out in the US on the Sega CD. Still only sold 13 copies, however.

Thanks for all the replys guys. I was thinking of getting a converter cart, but after seeing the games, their hefty price tags, and the price of the carts on ebay, I decided aganist it.

Thanks for the research. I tried to find it using wiki but the list of megadrive games was combined with the genesis ones =/

as a matter of interest, overall, who do you think got the best region specific releases?
i've yet to come accross a ntsc only game ive felt the need to run out and import.
i'd happily stick with super fantasy zone, alien soldier and cannon fodder ;)

In my opinion all regions have quite a few must haves. But in overall, the US wins, closely followed by Japan and last Europe.

*Europe do have a lot of exclusives, but very few of them are more than average.

*Japan got some great exclusives, some of them are kind of pointless unless you speak jap, but many others are just as fun even if you have no clue as to what is going on.

*US dosent have any real killer exclusives, but many are above average so I think that region score the highest average.

All this is off course not really interesting since its so easy to mod ut gen/mega drive for the few games that wont run on an unmodded machine. Im much more interested in the boxes.

I prefer Jap games anyday due to the amazing boxart, no hanger boxes and the neat MD mark on top of the back. Plus japanese titles looks cool. Plus they have quite a number of fun special edition boxes.

Second (and im biased here) are the Eu boxes, They are usually less barcodes & company logos on the back of these and the Mega Drive logo blends better with the background and are more unisized. (though Genesis sounds cooler). And the later blue boxes looks more classy that the Genesis Commy ones.

The US stinks in this department. Barcodes, company logos and genesis logos in many shapes and versions. Dosent look all that good on the shelves. Adding the eyetearing red color and cheap paperboxes means that i avoid US games at all costs unless they are exclusives.

I pretty much agree with winona about the boxart, though my biggest issue with US boxes is the terrible art design that makes everything look cheesy and second rate.

Regarding exclusives, I'd much rather have a few excellent ones, and imo those are found in japan. Games like panorama cotton, monster world 4 and langrisser 2 are some of the best games I've ever played on the MD, or ever played period.

I like the overall box-design of PAL-games, be it the black or the blue boxes.
What I donīt like is that PAL-boxes have the US-artworks on them most times.
Just look at the Phantasy Star-games, where the manga-characters that appear in the game are exchanged for some western-style figures that look like they are from the cover of some cheap fantasy-novel.
Iīm still glad that we PALians didnīt get the disgusting US-boxart for Street Fighter 2 SCE.
The japanese artworks are good, but I donīt really like how the texts and pics are set chaotically all over the box.

Pretty sure Turbo Outrun and Super Fantasy Zone had european PAL releases, but not in the USA. Both run fine on my CDX with no mods.

Yes. There are PAL and Japanese versions of these two games.

Europe got the 'Classics Collection' - Gunstar Heroes, Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle, Altered Beast and Flicky on one cart.

Flux is impressive from a technical point of view, too - along with the Mega-CD backup cartridge (which I've never seen with the European branding, oddly enough), it's a cartridge that communicates with the Mega-CD. It never got a Japanese or American release.

Both are region-free, I believe.

You know how some media players can produce visualisations to accompany your music? Flux is like that - you put an audio CD in the Mega-CD, put the cartridge into the Mega Drive and turn it on. It's not a game, it's an 'Audio Accessory Cartridge'.

Here's my copy: (awful lighting, sorry)

My european Shining Force CD manual talks about a back up cart. It shouldn't if it wants you to import one. Game developers hate when you import stuff. Especially when europeans do it, since it's cheaper everywhere else.

If you're a strategy fan you might want to check out Ninja Burai Densetsu and Vixen 357. If you're an RPG fan, I've heard good things about Rent-a-Hero and Surging Aura. :)

Ninja Burai Densetsu is pretty sweet. I can't understand much of the game, and I was able to complete a few of the missions.

I hope to see that and the Hybrid Front translated someday.
