View Full Version : Best modder?

Hi

I finally located a Non-TMSS Genesis after about 20 different systems! I would like to get this modded with all the good stuff. RCA,S-Vid,Stereo from Headphones,Switches for regions, and if possible a little fan put in to keep things nice and cool.

I would like the mods to look exactly like my current modded Genny if possible, I find it to be really nice quality and I like the switches a lot.

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_0AqOmhqpyhk/TDuk_W4_UqI/AAAAAAAAABo/IzThRiTcvbg/s400/P4220005.JPG

I have some really nice games for trade or a combo of cash and games. Or just cash.

If anyone can do this or know someone who does I would appreciate it!
Oh I prefer to keep this in the States as well.

Thanks

Tiido "TmEE" Priimägi is the one and only modding god for Sega stuff. This is a well known fact around these parts. He's modded nearly all of my consoles and have done a perfect job everytime. He lives in Estonia (the second greatest country to the right of Sweden, next to Japan) though.

I bought a CCAM modded, + SVIDEO genesis 2 from electrochip. Im very happy with his work, other than a false contact that started going on with a controller port, but that is not his fault :)

Best ever? Before D-lite went AWOL, he had done some of the best mod work I had ever seen. I had a hooked up region modded Duo-RX from him a few years back.

ooXxXoo does some amazing work. I purchased a super modded Genesis 3 from him about 2 months ago. His work is super clean, prices are fantastic, and he's just a straight up great guy.

Obviously, Electrochip and TmEE do great work as well.

If you don't mind posting to the UK I can vouch for this cat's work. I started this thread a little while back, and TmEE answered that he may be able to do something similar too. There's also another post with another link showing how it's done (although I don't know for sure if this is exactly the same mod). No switches, nice tri clour LED and versatile too. It's just the region mod, but I'm sure he could also do the other stuff you want at the same time if you wanted this switchless thing.

http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showthread.php?t=14951

He did mine, and my Nomad to a high standard. See what you think, if it's a no go to post this far there may be someone where you are that can do something similar if they see the vid.

Hope this is of use to you.

I do some modding work from time to time...Although, I do a things little bit different than you modded Genesis shown above...As I rather have the bulky Master System compatibility :ok: ..

I also prefer sliding switches better, 'cause they don't poke out that much like tumors :p ,and they are quite reliable, here: .....

Questions that may be obvious to others but not to me:

-Is S-video really THAT big a difference?

-Is the sound actually stereo when you do the mod for the composite cables?

- How big a difference is it really from simply using the A/V cable attachment already available for the Genesis?

I've been wondering if anyone here can recommend me to someone, or can do it themselves, who can do an S-Video mod on a CDX? I have one in pretty great condition and it works great. I just can't stand the composite signal anymore. Also, if anyone can also recommend me to someone who can do an A/V mod for an NES Toploader that would be fantastic. Thanks guys and continue your awesome modding!

Yes S-Video is THAT big of difference. It is Stereo when tapped from the headphone jack from in front. Genesis 2 offers Stereo from the AV port already. Using better cables than the standard cheapy ones will yield a better picture, it might not be night day difference but it will be better. S-Video is much better clarity than composite here are some pics I took.

That's some pretty even (but blurry) composite you've got there... blurry but I don't see any of the characteristic nasty luma artifacts (dot crawl, "picket fencing", etc). S-video is nice in any case. ;)

Tiido is great if you're in Europe or willing to ship to Europe... but if you want to stick to the continental US (or North America in general), ooXxXoo (who popped in earlier) is a pretty good option.
IIRC he also developed the Genesis 3 compatibility mod.

S-Video is fine if you use an CRT without component in. If you got a TV with component in I'd recommend that route. All you need is a converter and a SCART cable. It doesn't even require a mod to your console. And the converter can be used with other consoles as well. Link: http://shop.ebay.com/yuv+scart

Of course, that doesn't replace the other mods - such as Crystal Clear Audio mod, region mod, cartslot widening, etc. pp.

Component isn't always worth it though... S-video in NTSC tends to be really close (though there's the occasional issue like rainbow moire chroma artifacts -same as in composite video but lesser). One major issue is that some TVs are calibrated more for NTSC chroma than RGB/component and you're stuck with off colors unless you go into the service menu. (for example, on Apolloboy's TV -I think it's a sanyo- his Modded model 2 -by Tiido- has colors very close to what fusion shows and many RGB screenshots I've seen, but with component it's hard to get even close to the right balance by messing with saturation and hue adjustment -again, short fo modifying RGB values in the service menu- the greens and blues in particular seemed too strong)

So, I'm confused. What is composite, what is S Video? I use a European Scart lead, how does that compare to the ones above?

Cheers.

RGB-SCART is better than S-Video and component.

Composite (or composhit as people like to call it) is the worst video connection after RF; seeing as you live in Europe, it's the same as standard SCART.

S-Video is better, but you have to mod the console to get it - not a good idea. Our American cousins prefer it though because they can't use SCART leads.

Then you have RGB-SCART, the cream of the crop of video input for the MD. You can grab a lead off Ebay for around 6 GBP.

Lastly, you have component. Only modern TVs have these (though some older ones do too), and in order to use it with the Mega Drive you're gonna need a RGB-to-Component upscaler (quite expensive) and a RGB Scart lead. Quality is about the same as RGB Scart - only use this if you have no SCART input or your HDTV fucks up with RGB.

I think it looks the closest to where stock outputs would have been, without the PBC in mind. Also, some people don't care about the PBC compatibility.

Yeah, I've actually set aside some heatsinks for my own personal projects. On top of that, I was searching for female s-video mounts this morning when I found these:

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=091-1212

I figure I can just jam a soldered wire into each of the holes on the backside and hot glue them all in place. Those 5 Genesis systems I won on eBay have no idea what's in store for them... :)

only thing is that i added composite video to the channel select hole to cover it up.
I ordered a s-video jack and waiting for it to finish it off.

Cool a va2. 1989 correct. To OP, all you had to do was look or ask what shell serial number (besides motherboard) by asking ebay seller to figure out revision (non tmms or tmms).
