Take a look at the controller pictured below (not the wireless 6-button, the one above it):

Does anyone have any experience with this controller? I think it is called the AX-1E or something like that. It was advertised in the instruction booklet of the Japanese After Burner 2 as being compatible (which is why the title screen says "Control Pad" or something similar). As far as I know After Burner 2 is the only game compatible with this controller. Of course it wasn't mentioned in the US version's instruction manual, but the US game is still compatible with this state-of-the-art space-age device.

EDIT: I found the following information:

Analogue control pad this was called the AX-1E controller
and was a black, circular shaped pad. There was an analogue sick
and an analogue throttle control as well as 4 independent fire
buttons and a start button.

This controller was compatible with Afterburner II, F1 Hero and
Galaxy Force II. This pad was only released in Japan.

You could also use it with After Burner 3 on the Sega CD.

Whoa! I've never seen that before. Shame it's not fully compatible, huh? Would be awesome to play certain Genesis games with an analog stick...

Another first from Sega. Out the window goes that god-awful N64 trident :]

This wasn't made by Sega. I think it worked with some other systems.

Galaxy Force 2 has no region protection, so I'd wager it work with US copies and systems. :)

Seems to only have a Sega jack on the end from other pictures I've seen, and Sega advertised it in the manual with their games.

I thought it was Micomsoft?

I wasn't saying it was made by Sega, I was saying I haven't seen any other systems use it and was most likely exclusive to the Mega Drive.

First post! I'm proud of myself.

The XE-1 AP actually is compatible with multiple Japanese systems including the X68000, FM Towns and MSX.

And like all good and rare items, you can find one on eBay:

$60? I'll pass.

Why isn't it compatible with the best-selling Konix Multi-System?

It might have originally been sold under the Sharp brand, though that one definitely seems to be a Micomsoft version.

Micomsoft made a lot of great or at the very least interesting controllers, here's another:
Look for the Cyber Stick! (http://home.comcast.net/%7Eedoscuro/x68k_unknown_1.jpg)

That one was sold under both the Sharp and Micomsoft brands; it probably started being sold as a Micomsoft product when Sharp dropped the x68K line.

Hmm, I should try that thing out on a Genesis...
