In your opinion what games had the worst endings?

Shadow of the Beast. In order to fit it on a standard 8meg cart, they removed the ending sequence in favor of a static screen that says "Congratulations! You have freed yourself from the shadow of the beast" and then you enter your initials for high score and it goes back to the title screen.

Ooh, I remember that. :fit:

Jewel Master ticked me off. It's a pretty long game, and the ending is basically the same cut scene you get in the intro, with two lame paragraphs about how you saved the world, etc. Lame.

I hated the ending of Kid Chameleon... I worked so hard for that??? AHHHHH! I wasn't expecting an ending like PSII (which is just freakin' amazing, well worth the difficulty) But come on, Kid Chameleon was HARD and you get shit for beating it... its worst then the opening scene.

I've been upset by many, but I can't remember right now. In last 7 years I've been only playing RPGs and RPGs usually have very good endings. One noteable though on the Genny is Shadowrun, I was rather upset with the crap ending that game had... other then that though the rest of the game is immersive and AMAZING!

Garfield: Caught in the Act has a very bad/brief ending as far as I can recall.

(now I'm not basing this on simplicity to endings... just if the ending doesn't live up to the quality of the game itself)

I remember one that REALLY pissed me off years back.

Ecco 2 Tides of Time

I never played the Genny version, but I figure it is similar to the SCD one which I played. I was 11 and in love with this game, I preordered it and everything.

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER

So when it got to the end FINALY I was pissed to see what I considered a heroic good semaritin character who was on his final journey to destroy the time machine for the good of animal kind. But he doesn't, WTF, he sends himself a drift in the sea of time??? What the hell, I was so pissed, he was supposed to destroy it so no bad people get there hands on it... he should lured the freakin' queen embryo in to it, sent it back to the past to be killed (which is what he does) and then destroyed it... Now with him adrift in the sea of time he can't come and help Earth if some other Alien race decides to threaten us! Dude, we are all gonna die now!

Altered Beast's ending pissed me off too. The arcade game had this cool ending where the whole game was revealed to be a movie shoot. The Genesis game lost all of it.

One game that I remember that had a terrible ending was World Heroes. If you beat the game with anyone they don't give their story. All that for congratulations.

I rather liked that ending. It was a short game, so I frankly wouldn't be heartbroken if the ending was proportionally as short. Friends and I would have fun just kicking the words off the screen before they form rows. Great, Hi-Fi music at the end too.

the arcade ending to altered beast was a bit longer.

I say that any ending that rewards you with a mere "conglatuation" screen is a bad one.

I remember the ending to Clayfigher.
just a big pastel screen that says "thanks for playing"

They were going to make a third Ecco that followed of right there, and you know. If they had another alien race than Vortex attack Earth, it just wouldn't be Ecco.

Bonanza Bros. had a bad ending. I didn't expect much from it, but couldn't they have done something more?

Looks like Zeus commanded this thread to "Wise from your gwave!", amirite?....OK, I'm done--if you can't beat 'em blah blah and all that jazz.

Not that it's the "worst" ending, but I hated the ending I got for Bio-hazard Battle. According to the book, you wake up from a long hypersleep because the time has come to kill the critters and retake the colony planet, so you're cleaning out the infestations and looking for a place to recolonize the planet, plus gathering info on what caused the original biological weapon outbreak or whatever. So what do you get for doing all that? You go back to the orbiting platform, and you get to go back into stasis for some untold reason: no reveal about the outbreak, no colonizing, no "juicy colonists' daughters we have to rescue from their virginity," nothing. You take a nap. The end.

Well then how do you feel about the Golden Axe ending? :)

Alex Kidd's ending really pissed me off. I believe I have mentioned it in a previous Reader Roundtable. Tosh game with a tosh ending.

I didn't like Sonic 3's ending. All that just to see Sonic turn around and wag his finger at me?

What ending sequence? The Amiga original did the same thing...

They never released 'Battle Squadron 2', damn it!

Zero Wing had those weird pinkish single celled ... things on the only ending screen. I slogged through the game for that?

I don't like it when games say "Well done! Now do it again."

Play through on a harder difficulty setting. There is an actual ending if you play it on Medium, and another when played on Hard.

Entirely agree. This is the first and only Alex Kidd game I took the time to complete (I don't like the 8-bit titles either), and it was just a kick in the arse that made me wonder why I bothered at all and hate it forever.

Zero Wing annoyed me as well at the time. In retrospect, it's probably better than the standard "go back and play through the game on a harder difficulty setting you pitiful human" message.

The first game that came to mind upon seeing this thread was Zool. My thoughts went something along the line of "Who the hell is Zooz? What's that 2 headed dog thing? 'See you next time'? There isn't a Zool 2 on the Mega Drive! They lied!" Endings that promise a sequel that never comes. Yech.

Yea, major drag. I wish I could beat it through the third loop because I always thought that ending was pretty epic.

Those dancing things in Zero Wing always reminded me of the California Raisins dancing to the Can-Can or something.

The normal ending for Rolo to the Rescue says something like -

"You get back home but every night henceforth you are kept up thinking about all your friends you left behind....and you are never trully happy again for the rest of your life

Though I guess that could be considered a good ending, it made me laugh anyway.

If you rescue everyone you get a happy ending apparently

This isn't really related, but at the end of the Amiga game Flood, after you finally manage to escape from the oncoming water and reach the surface, you get a short movie of you celebrating and then getting hit by a car and killed :D

Hmmm its hard for me to choose. The best endings in my opinion by far are Comix Zone, Ristar, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

OH I know. Its not so much a bad ending as unsatisfying for such a difficult game.

The Ooze.

I hated the ending. Even when I did get enough mass and all the DNA, I get to see myself turn human. But its pointless, becuase appearantly, you were actually bottled up in a lava lamp. RAWR

Alex's quest in the first game (and this) was a lie!!!!!!!!!!! :p
