I am broke right now. I have to pay $395 for a car repair bill, and around that much for college books.

Dave,
I feel you. I graduated 2 years ago and was such a cheap bastard I went the library to use the textbooks you could check out. But hey, saved me ~$350 each quarter!

Good idea, but I hate going to any library. Plus I doubt they have the books for my major.
Back on topic: I never understood why Columns 2 was never released on the Genesis. But then again it was flash columns and Columns on the Genesis contained a weak Flash Columns mode.

I found Columns III to be a lot better than the original. I enjoyed the "attack the other player" gameplay mechanic much more than the original's "everything gets gradually faster" gameplay, which wears a little thin for me. There was a lot of strategy in those attacks, and it's really satisfying to do.

I thought Columns was almost unplayable. Itīs way to fast for me, much harder than Tetris...

Even though I like Columns III, I think I still prefer the original.

I love Columns, but it's just too easy. The only way I can get the game to end is to just walk away -- it never becomes the kind of challenge that Tetris can at higher levels. The Genesis version is still the best game of Columns around. The arcade game and version on Saturn Columns Collection is missing the additional music tracks and modes, and Columns '97 is too vivid looking and makes identifying jewels so much more difficult under pressure.

Didn't the SMS version have some mode not present on Genesis?

Doesnīt sound like the Columns I played recently. Or maybe I chose another game mode or difficulty level? I found it almost unplayable.
I even started slow motion after a while because it was so fucking fast!
Maybe Iīm just retarded...:?

No idea as I've never played it, but that makes me interested. Based on what I just tried at Every Video Game though, I don't think so. It has different backgrounds and tilesets for the jewels, but that seems to be about it.

Maybe? :) It's too simple to build chains and keep things low, even at high speeds. Every Columns game which followed changed the formula a bit and made it challenging, but the original is impossible to lose at, at least from my experience. I think that works to its favor, though, especially with the music being so calming. Columns is still my favorite Sega puzzle game, though the only others I can think about off hand are Baku Baku and Lose Your Marbles.

Some of the music used in Columns is used in the Mega Games compilations' title screens. Fun fact :)

I was pulling an all nighter and going to some shitty morning meeting the next day, and I managed to reach level 85.
And this was when i was running on lots of caffeine and no sleep.
Sad part is I could never reach that level when well rested and super-charged on caffeine. :|
And someone mentioned Columns Collection....I loved the "bonus" stuff that could be unlocked, especially the new sound FX for the games. The most hilarious one was when the jewels disappear it makes the sound of a gun firing.

What is there to unlock in Columns Arcade Collection, and how do you do it?
I own the game, but I am confused...
Rusty Venture

You unlock things by scoring points or by the number of jewels you get rid of.
What you can unlock are different sounds (they are specific to certain games in the collection) and you can also unlock different "jewel designs" for certain games as well.

The Mega Games 6-in-1 and Classic Compilation games have Columns music. The title music in Mega Games vols. 1 & 2 is different, too.

This game is all right but i like Tetris alot better. I believe the best game of tetris is on the game boy. I can get to level 9 but I have never beaten it though...:(
Decent game, but Columns 3 is oh so hard to find. :(
That was the best one, too, wasn't it? I just didn't dig the first Columns game. I dunno, game just wasn't me and I didn't like it. But Columns 3... man, that game was fun to play.

Hmmmm...

Can you provide a link to the Columns Collection ROM? If that's allowed.
Rusty Venture

It's a Saturn game, it doesn't have a ROM.
And even if someone had it copied online somewhere....I dunno where to look and i don't care.
Just buy the Collection, its not terribly expensive and its really cool.
