View Full Version : Rocket Knight Adventures
Out of the 100 or so games I ordered to sell, the two I pulled for my own personal collection, was a very ugly copyof NBA Jam, and Rocket Knight adventures.
Wow what a fun platformer. are there more games like this? My initial reaction to the name of the game, and the cover was that it was so campy. But after playing it, I couldn't help but be enthralled by colorful visuals and the ultra tight controls.
Kudos who whomever made this one!

RKA has fantastic sound and colours, as well as fantastic, varied gameplay. You have to love the music accompanying the first flight sequence, after destroying the Pig Tank.
It's a shame the Euro and US versions were so tough-camp - if you get a chance, pick up the Japanese version of the game. It's chiplocked, but the game's cuter. For example, a slightly different intro and level intro sequences.

It's the perfect platformer, and I love it. <3
Hmm I didn't think cuter was possible.

Ahh Rocket Knight. That game brings back some memories. Amazing graphics and play mechanics. It's too bad that great games like this get overlooked by a large part of the gaming community because they're considered "kiddie" games based on the cute characters. I always thought games like this were far more engrossing and challenging than any Madden incarnation. But then, I'm a freak.

Why did they remove the cuteness from our version?

This is the main reason I shift from US version to JPN in the past years..........even it cost me quite a bit to get JPN ones but still worth every penny (insert, booklet, no censorship or localization)
Indeed Rocket Knight Adventures is an awesome game, although I never finished it.
If you have an SNES a good game to try-out would be Sparkster, which is a different game in the same series.

That can backfire you realize, there aren't any nuclear weapons in the Japanese version of Fallout 3, for example.

RKA is one of those cool games that gets more fun the better you get at it.

I love Rocket Knight. Though at least in this ton it must have been over looked because there were tons of them in the bargain bin, which is why ,sadly, I over looked it for so long. I really wish they wouldn't change things for the US. Its really annoying its like they think we are all like Rambo or something.

Has anyone tried the new one they put on the PSN? I played the demo.. its alright. Its a fun game and if you haven't tried it yet you may be pleased to know they use very well remixed music from the original. But it doesn't feel quite right for some reason. The whole scheme feels more like Donkey Kong Country... The control scheme is weird too if you pick it up right after playing rocket knight. You don't charge your rocket it just goes down as you use it for stuff and then rebuilds. Theres also a boost button to use the rocket to extend your jump... IDK, its not in any way bad I just don't see a reason to fix what isn't broken, I liked RKA's control setup.
Also, in RKA, I am completely stuck at the part where the evil opposom knight guy gets in the giant knight mech suit thingy and chases you... i can't for the life of me figure out how to keep running away from him once you get to the part with the vertical wall, i can't power up my rocket that quickly!

The new one is more of a platformer than an arcade game. It feels more similar to the Sparkster games to me (minus the unplayability).
As for the part where you have to escape the robot, you just move quicker? Just find the right spots to do the rocket boost.
That new RKA game is total ass. They should've stuck to 2d sprites.
Classic RKA owns the house.

well...I don't know about TOTAL ass...I've played total ass...and its sequel Total Ass 2 : Full Metal Hemorrhoids...and it resembles neither. Its certainly nothing to write home about though. It only seems as bad as it does I think because we have to compare it to RKA. But i agree with you, using sprites alla Mega Man 9 would have been the better way to go.

I just played through the original RKA yesterday and remembered how awesome it is! Has anyone here actually beaten the game on Hard Mode? One-hit instant death is crazy!

It's probably decently playable, but I just hate pseudo-3d platformers. Either go full 3d, or use sprites. A 2d game using (handdrawn) sprites will always look best though.

I feel ya buddy. the one exception may be that wario Land game on the cube.. But that wasn't quite the same. I don't get whats so hard about this for some of these developers to understand. Retro gaming is more popular than ever, Castlevania Symphony of the Night is a top download still, along with Braid...why can't they see that this is a good formula?it reminds me of Disney and there idiotic move they had going for quite a while where they were dumping 2d animation and only doing pixar crap all the time. Eventually they woke up and realized that a format being old doesn't make it broken. But all us laymen knew that already...idiots.

By abusing savestates (to my eternal shame), I managed it once. The ending's no different, you just get a slightly different 'Congratulations' screen IIRC.

A few buddies and I took turns playing this the other night got to the fifth (final?) level before we ran out of continues. This is easily one of the most charming games I've ever played, and it perfectly encapsulates pretty much everything I love about 16-bit game design. A true treasure.

Played this again last night, and again made my way to level 5. And again lost all of my carefully collected lives on that damn stage. Ah well! It was a ton of fun, at least.
RKA is really up there with S3&K and Ecco the Dolphin in terms of presenting a narrative without any text. Also: Love the scene where Sparkster gets fired out of the cannon.
Great game, and I think I would go so far as to say it is essential to any decent Genesis collection.
