View Full Version : 2nd Opinions on Reviews...

I was thinking that we could reach something of a compromise on the second opinion option. Since we won't be posting more than one review per game, we could run the second opinion as a feature, where the writer would discuss what they agreed/disagreed with in the actual review. I was thinking of calling it "Double Take" and letting contributors get in on it. It would be done in feature style, with only a few screenshots (since the actual review already has boxart and screen grabs).

Granted, some care would have to be taken when going about this. I don't want flamefests or bash-o-ramas, and only logical and justified rebuttals would be accepted. If you don't agree with the review's opinion about graphics, for instance, you should be prepared to explain why you disagree and offer some evidence to the contrary.

This has the makings for some great analysis that offers more depth to our coverage, as well as allowing contributors to write about those games they enjoy that have already been covered.

Thoughts?

I think making a feature out of it is pretty wasteful - assuming it'd be given the full treatment with headlines and everything. And what happens when people come along later with fresh opinions? Do you do a second feature or update the old one? Or just say 'too bad'?

Also, for this to work I would think it could only be used for *really* controversial reviews. (Do we have any of those here?)

The more I think about it, the more I don't like the idea. Surely there's a less dramatic way to do this - like a poll embedded in every review like Amazon. (e.g. - '45 out of 48 readers agreed with this review'.)

Jeremy Peeples reviews where for a while. I know Super Thunder Blade, and Championship Pro-Am, and Tempo was.

I think there should be that Amazon option Genesis Knight mentioned. Making other opinions features will just mess things up.

I think it would be a possibility.:|
I have absolutely no idea of web design, but would it be so difficult to let all visitors (or only all Sega-16 members) rate the games themselves to get a userīs average rating like, say, on Moby games?
You could put the userīs rating right under the authorīs...

How about giving us the ability to submit a "second opinion", and it would just be like a mini-review located below the main review on the same page. Sorta like GI's method, except we'd only have second opinions when there was actual disagreement involved, and it wouldn't suck because it's not being written by GI. Also, a third (or fourth etc.) opinion would be allowed if it's significantly different from the other two.

This would have to be automated, or otherwise Ken's workload would go through the roof.

But if it's automated, there's no quality assurance.

Genesis Knight

It'd have to be a tradeoff, yes. Either Ken is constantly harassed by people wanting their voices heard and must continually edit pages, or he can automate it like Genesis Collective and have to worry about spam and all that garbage.

OR... He can just limit people to agree/disagree and save himself a ton of hassle.

I think having a feature like this would be a great idea. If it's possible, i think we should be able to submit another review of a game, to contrast opinions on the game.

I think a short single paragraph second opinion would be cool. Especially for Sonic CD ::Cough 1::

But I'd like to see us reach closer to the entire list of Genesis SegaCD and 32x games before we go do that. We're still missing the majority of the library.

I still think integrated a comment section at the bottom of the review would work better a la a better Genesis Collective. The forum topics generated when a review gets launched tend to find themselves buried after just a few weeks, so it would be good for newcomers to easily find the discussion of a review attached to the page, either in-line or just a link to the forum topic.

You'll get a flood of "second looks" or whatnot, so the page will be cluttered either way. At least with a forum format you won't have to layout each and every submission. :p

^ Good idea Benjamin. Also, I have no idea if it works period, but can't one set the site up to be where MEMBERS ONLY could rate a game 1-10? Put that at the bottom of each review. And make it that members with a minimum of 50 posts can only vote, and can only vote once.

Again, I have no idea if this is even possible technologically, but it probably is and I just have no clue how, lol.

I think the double take feature is a great idea. Super Thunderblade needs to be re-reviewed and Altered Beast deserves a perfect 10. ;)

Comments and perhaps a rating system similar to what Benjamin said is the best idea imo.

It's coming. Soon each review will have a section at the bottom that will let readers:

- Score the game from 1-10. This will average out to show a reader score along with the author's score.
- Leave a 400 character comment about the game/review.

Me neither. But what will make a "reader". A forum account, a site account or just an IP number? If it is the latter, just anyone can give Super Thunderblade a 10 and write "This is the best game ever! /Melf".

Mr Smith
10-14-2007, 09:39 AM
I assume "reader" would be somebody who reads the article. I also intend to rate Super Thunderblade with its deserved a 10 with the comment "This is the best game ever! /Melf". :p

If we make it IP addresses, it'll be a major cutdown to rating spamming. Registerd users would too, but not as much.

Melf
10-14-2007, 08:33 PM
Only those registered in the forum can rate a review and leave comments. ;)

Sounds like a great idea although I hope extreme ratings wont ruin averages as some like to do. I mean it really annoys when something obviously amazing that has like a few 9 or 10 rating and then some guy comes along and rates it 0 because he can't appreciate it and then posts a comment like "this gme sucks it all stupid and don get it".

That'd be a really nice idea, since I've spotted several games that in my mind are worth 8 or 9 instead of 5 or 6... "the soundtrack is bland... 0 points" and I think it is perfect for that game. I like that second shot idea very much.

That's what I mean. Even if it's not the reviewers kind of thing the games should still be approached from a neutral point of view.

There might be a bit of a delay in implementing this though. It's all ready to go, but I have to familiarize myself with the database and how to update. It shouldn't take me more than a week or so.
