i believe sonic 3 saves are to a programmable rom and not to battery. if it won't save, you may have to buy one that will.

It's stupid. They should have had an replaceable battery, like in for example Warriors of the Eternal Sun. I don't want to buy new Sonic 3 carts every time they stop working.

Sonic3 uses a ferro electrical ram...
This piece of hardware is almost mechanical (yeah, with things moving inside).
Maybe you can try to clean contacts of your cartridge before doing something else.
Well, also maybe you put it near a magnetic source and it damaged its internals?
Haha, good luck.

My Sonic 3 battery wasn't dead after all. I read on some page on the Internets that you shouldn't put any unfitting cartridge into Sonic & Knuckles, because that will erase the save of Sonic 3 & Knuckles. That should mean there is a save in S&K too. There are 8 saves in S3&K and 6 in Sonic 3. Now that I've tried S3&K again, everything works as it should.

What did you try to stick in the cartridge that was unfitting...?

Beggar Prince, for example. And I mean it technically, not physically :P.

The Sonic mega collection on GC solved these problems :)

See?
FRAM is the thing thats kinda mechanic in S3 cart. S&K carts has no memory in it, only S3 cart has. And I suspect the problem to be related with dirtyness... these kind of memories are so good that these were used in military for quite some time.
