I inherited my Sega CD when my sister dumped all her old Sega stuff (including some Genesis and Sega CD games) on me. I'm still not sold on it, but I'm willing to give it another chance. Here's my thoughts on individual games so far:
Eye Of The Beholder: I played the hell out of this one! I love D&D-style RPG's (I can't get enough of Neverwinter Nights), so this was right up my street. OK, the voice acting is pretty amateurish/crummy, but the music goes from symphonic to techno and works splendidly, and the sound effects are great! Battles always got my blood and adrenaline pumping. Lots of challenging puzzles and neat hidden stuff (the hidden "special quests" for each level) too.
Ecco The Dolphin: Playing this reminds me of why when I lent a friend my copy of Ecco: The Tides Of Time, I never asked her for it back. It's not that the graphics/music aren't great or the gameplay is bad. It's just that the swirly motion of the on-screen movement gives me motion sickness really bad.
Sewer Shark: Well, at least it was free. Sega sure thought that live action FMV would be the next big thing, but it was not to be. It sure doesn't help that the combination of flimsy storyline and mediocre gameplay didn't set the world on fire. Still, I made it from beginning to end out of sheer boredom. Incidentally, the girl who plays Falco is THE WORST actress on the face of the Earth (OK, I'm exaggerating slightly).
Mortal Kombat: This is the reason my sister got the Sega CD in the first place. Too bad gameplay is so choppy. Oh well, watching your foes get eviscerated or explode into splashes of blood and guts gets old really fast, anyways. Still, this did have one big advantage over MK2: Kano!
Dracula Unleashed: More tedious live action FMV stuff.
Night Trap: As above. Had I known this was another one of those "some guy barking orders at you as you follow his instructions by using the joypad" games like Sewer Shark, I never would have even considered picking it up. Oh well, only $2 down the hole.
Silpheed: OK, things are looking up finally. I always loved Gyruss, which this reminds me of, but with some amazing 3-D graphics. Really, the planets, asteroids and mother-ship backgrounds are lovingly crafted. Never before has a video game made me feel more like Luke Skywalker, not even actual Star Wars tie ins.
OK, apart from Eye Of The Beholder, I was seriously let down by the Sega CD...until I picked up the copy of Silpheed this week, which I've been playing almost non-stop. Despite the fact that I have simply been unable to advance past Level 3 (man that's hard!), extremely addictive, a very impressive game. So I won't give up on it just yet. At least not until I scrounge up a copy of Sonic CD (nearly bought a copy some months ago, but it was scratched beyond recognition, so I left it at the store)...or if I manage to find copies of the Lunar games (less likely, but there's always hope).
