yea me to
I love it, but for some reason prefer part two. I guess it's because it's more like the original, I don't know.
I remember I played splatterhouse in the arcade, but never on sega. I sure would like to find any game of this series

Splatterhouse 2 is in fact more like 1. Same kind of Friday the 13th kind of spook, trademark Namco-esqe music, and gameplay.
Splatterhouse 3 plays a bit faster, and you can walk on a XY 2-D plane. Closer to a beatem up, it also has Zelda-ish screens where you fight in a specified room until all the enemies are cleared. From there you may move to a new adjacent room of your choice to get to your goal. You also have a powerup feature where by collecting powerstocks, and hit the A button you can morph into a Phreaky version of yourself and do much more damage. It is all a welcome addition to the franchise.
Both SP 2 and 3 have a password save feature.
I own all 3 splatter house games (including the TG16 SP1 version), and they each have their purpose. If you find SP3, as I think it is kinda rare (correct me if I'm wrong), get it.
Problem with the series, is they weren't distributed well. Very pricey.

splatterhouse is here in germany very rare... all the games with Gore are here on the index ( a list with forbidden games ) Nobody cas sell this games that's ilegal but to have this games at home thats legal
-very strange
I like both games ( 2 and 3 )
but the story in number 3 is very great it plays like a horrormovie ! "the boreworm infestes Jennifers Brain" i like that
Splatterhouse on the PC Engine is great too but the us release is cut ! there are no Pentagrams and not so much gore like in the japanese version

I'd pick Splatterhouse 3 mostly because it is:
1.) The most fair.
2.) Fighting engine is similar to a brawler rather than a platformer.
3.) Graphically its more impressive without any loss in quality in other areas.
BUT... for Splatterhouse purists, they may prefer the 2nd edition. Even some hold their allegiance towards the 1st version.
I'd say if you can help it, get them both but certainly look for #3 first.

Ok I've been playing this one recently and I wanted to like it but the time limit thing is total BS and it doesnt give you enough time to explore all the rooms and I always run out of time when I'm fighting the boss. Also certain enemies can block and you can't so that results in a lot of cheap hits that dwindle your life bar quickly. Between the stupid time limit and the blocking enemies cheap hits and only 3 lives and 3 continues, I havent been able to to get far in this game and I dont think I like it much either.

Slatterhouse 3. A beat'em up mixed with a confusing maze. Not enough moves. Weapons get taken instantly by floating heads if they are dropped. Good graphics and sound. Cheap final boss. Annoying time limits in game. Password system a good thing. All in all, a good unique game.

Well I could always play the original on my modded xbox but I would reaaaaaaaaaaally enjoy a proper port to Genesis,
I mean.. it has 2 and 3, so why not 1?
Would be a nice project to tackle, shame I'm no coder or I'd have pulled apart SH2 and based it on that,
I mean SH2 seems to mostly control the same?

I quite like this; thumbs-down for being US/Jap only though. It's very challenging; but like most FF-esque games, it tends to recycle the same few foes over and over. Time limits can be a pain, but once you know the quickest way through the floor you're on, you have ample time to beat a boss. 'Super Rick' is a nice addiction as well; same you can't de-activate it at will and conserve the power for later.

huh?
They were distributed in every major game store (EB, Toys R Us, Sears, etc) across the US.
Brand new sealed copies were still readily available on eBay in the early 2000's.
Stop making stuff up.

Splatterhouse 2 and 3 have become pricey over the years, do you think it's just because of demand? The NOS could have dried up.

Oh for sure the NOS has dried up years ago.
And the current selling prices are entirely because of continued popularity.
It has nothing to do with the distribution of the games.
Namco was one of the biggest 3rd party distributors for Genesis in North America. They had shelf space at all the retail outlets.

I actually wrote about S3 in the last roundtable. I really enjoyed it. It takes the beat-em-up genre and adds some new gameplay elements which really enhance the overall experience. I like the maze levels. Not only can you find hidden power-ups, but different paths lead to different destinies in the story line. There is a lot more going on in this one than in the first two.

I thought Splatterhouse 3 was as far as you could take the formula without losing the gory charm of the original(s). By far the best game in the series. It feels similar to how Shinobi 3 was to Revenge of Shinobi, both good games, but the formula really improved as series progressed.

Agreed, SH3 used the charm of 1 and 2 and added some much needed gameplay while still retaining the horror feeling of the first two games,
which is something the remake failed to do, it added so much.. weirdness that the horror took a real hit and got lost in the shuffle.
Instead of a horror based brawler we got a gory brawler with one liners, nothing like the original Splatterhouse games.

Timer is f'n stupid and you dont get enough time and enemies block your attacks and cheap hit you rapidly dwindiling your life bar and you cant block. No one wants to adress this but people are happy to bash Taz Mania and its flaws which arent as bad as this game. Some people I just dont know.

i enjoyed TazMania, but I haven't really played it since I've been a little kid. I might go back and give it a whirl.

People here also love to bash Sonic Spinball like it was the worst thing ever made even though it's definitely a good game (many people seem unaware that the D-pad can be used to completely control Sonic while in the air though...)

I always liked the Possessed Teddy Bear boss in SH3. Was a total WTF moment when I first saw it. LOL

Apparently the rom of SH3 in the remake features new digitized portraits, anyone got some screenshots of that?
Got this in the mail today. I played it for a couple of hours and believe I was pretty close to the ending - until I warped back to the second stage.
When I first started playing I was loving it - especially the weapons. I got about mid-way through it and lost interest. It's bad when I don't really feel compelled to play the game through. It also doesn't help that I have a horrible sense of navigation. I'm sure I replayed the same rooms countless times.

There's something about the Goodwills in my area, they're usually dry for retro games but when I do find something it's always a boxed Genesis game tossed in with the books and movies. I've managed to score a Mutant League Hockey and two Splatterhouse 3's, so no complaints here.
That said I'd never actually played a Splatterhouse game before, but I was impressed by SH3. A good looking beat em' up with an actual map layout. I'm also a sucker for horror themed games, so it was easy to love.

Dang, I pick up a random loose cart at Goodwill every once in a while but nothing this good. Cost me around $18 shipped and I thought I got a deal. :P

I suggest you try the remake. Yeah, the loading times suck but it's a pretty solid game and I have spent hours upon hours playing it. You also get Splatterhouse (Arcade), SH 2 and SH 3. One of the things that caught my eye about the remake was the inclusion of the Japanese arcade original.

I have one sealed. But not really looking to sell.
Back in the early 2000's there must have been a batch of unsold Namco games that turned up. I got Rolling Thunder 2 & 3, and Splatterhouse 3 sealed for pretty darn cheap.
Later got a loose Splatterhouse 3, so I never opened the sealed one.

FWIW, those times are roughly cut in half if you install it onto the HDD (360 version). They're still a bit of a wait, but not as long as if it was running from the DVD.
