At least I think it's a mod. I got this email today:

I saw your web site thru ask.com search engine. It's a very nice site! I do have a question, I recently got a genesis 2 and when I trried to turn it on, the small sega logo comes on then the screen goes blank and stays that way. I opened the console and found a weird modification done to the main board, there is a small circuit board "floating" behind the cartridge slot, its about 1 1/4 X 1 3/4. Then, there is a 1 x 3/4 tiny board mounted next to the biggest SEGA chip on the main board... There are wires running everywhere from these 2 boards.. What have I got???

Now, that's interesting. Hidden inside the Model 2's universal TMSS is a small, uncompressed 'SEGA' logo. You can see it for yourself, if you have a copy of the TMSS dumped (usually called 'Genesis O.S. ROM', thank you very much, ROM warez emporiums...) and the program named Tile Layer Pro.

From the description, I'd guess it's a modchip of some kind: '...biggest SEGA chip on the board..' sounds like the chip where you lift and solder pin 105 (IIRC) to a switch. There's not much we can tell without images, though :(
