View Full Version : Hands-On: Gunstar Hero Treasure Box
Genesis fans have a special place in their hearts for Treasure. They've given us some great games, like the classic Gunstar Heroes, as well as some gems that were never brought to America (Alien Soldier, for example). Stubborn as a mule, they still won't bring it our way even after a decade! Lucky for us, we can import Gunstar Heroes Treasure Box for the Japanese Playstation 2. Volume 25 of the Sega Ages 2500 series. We have a complete review (http://www.sega-16.com/2006/08/hands-on-gunstar-heroes-treasure-box-playstation-2/) for you, so read on and see if this should be your next import purchase!

I've played a few of the Sega Ages stuff, and I do like the implementation of 240p (the same resolution that the original games were made in). All other resolutions are upscaled. Screw that.... unless you have an HDTV. In that case the 480p with scanlines is best. And owners of non-CRT HDTVs will have to put up with the TV upscaling the image to 720p or whatever. Screw that.
Up until now, only a WonderMega could display Alien Soldier, Dynamite Headdy, and Gunstar Heroes in even S-Video quality without modding.
My Genesis isn't modded and I play the games in component video. Genesis outputs RGB without modding, and that RGB can easily be transoded into beautiful S-Video or Component.
The optical audio won't make the games sound any better since it would basically be the same as recording the Genesis to a CD and playing it back. The Genesis couldn't even support 32Khz audio much less 44.1Khz, so the benefits only exist if you have crappy analog audio cables.

The quote is from the Japanese marketing equivalent to Blast Processing or Welcome To The Next Level.

What quote, the "68000 HEART ON FIRE!" thing?
'VISUALSHOCK! SPEEDSHOCK! SOUNDSHOCK! NOW IS THE TIME TO THE 6800 HEART ON FIRE!'
The first three phrases were the Japanese marketing angle for the Mega Drive. Like Genesis Does in the States, or To Be This Good Takes AGES in Europe.
'SEGA - The Challenge Will Always Be There.'
'Now, there are no limits.'
So

Heh, good timing for a Treasure article, I just finished playing Astro Boy: Omega Factor for the GBA and I'm on a bit of a Treasure kick now.

I have yet to find an actual RGB cable for Genesis (like, to connect it to an RGB monitor). Does such a thing exist? I want to get non-SCART RGB out of the Genesis without modding.

You have to get a Commodore 64 cable I think. Not sure if they used a standard 8-pin DIN or not.

I wonder why they couldn't even type the extra zero for "68000"? It's a number. There is nothing to lose in translation.

I never cared for any of these stupid slogans and advertisments. Hell I never paid attention to them back when the Genesis was alive.
And even if I had heard of them back in the day, it wouldn't sway my opinon much.

I don't think they would've convinced me to buy any Sega swag either but I still think most of their marketting ploys were pretty enterteining, especially "Genesis does."

Segata Sanshiro wins the entertaining award. I love how he kicked teenagers asses who were going to play sports instead of playing a Sega Saturn. And another one where he kicks everyone's asses in a nightclub simply because they are not playing House of the Dead or something like that. If adverts like these aired in the US, I would have bought another Saturn!

CYBER RAZOR CUT (http://gameads.gamepressure.com/tv_game_commercial.asp?ID=2661)
The flagship Pirate TV ad - the one that recreated 'that' Mekong River scene from Apocalypse Now - was two minutes long! Skull and Fezhead! SABOTAGE! SUBVERSION! SEGA!
The spinoff in Sonic the Comic was everything to be expected from a '90s comic artist on acid - I'll have to host it someplace someday, it's utterly warped. Particularly for not-really-OK-kids? endorsing drinking shampoo XD
I miss when Nintendo were the quiet kid at the back of the class and SEGA were sponsoring Formula 1 cars and being 'underground' when it was still cool to be 'underground' :(
