View Full Version : Eternal Champions NOT "best" 2-D fighter

Ken Horowitz got a little too excited in his feature on Eternal Champions ... calling the Sega CD version "possibly the best 2D fighter ever made." What? I mean, it was OK at best, mostly mediocre, and definitely no where near as good as the console Street Fighter II games of the time.
As with many of the writers on this site, Horowitz is a little, if not completely, blinded by nostaglia.

Snatcher deserves a high score, because that game is a classic, but check out the scores below:
Willy Beamish - 8
Android Assault - 7
Dungeon Explorer - 8
Eternal Champions: Challenge From the Dark Side - 9
Popful Mail - 9
Rise of the Dragon - 8
Road Avenger - 9
None of these game should have been rated higher than a 6 ... maybe Popful Mail, which was pretty good, but definitely not a 9.
Willy Beamish was really boring, Android Assault, Eternal Champions and Rise of the Dragon are all very mediocre representations of their respective genres. Road Avenger was just plain lame.
In my opinion, Horowitz is letting the Sega CD fanboy part of him get the better of his reviews.

You'd better check out Jeremy Peeples 10s if you think Ken is crazy... :P

Yeah, I think that most of the writers here have all gone a little crazy with their reviews.

Ehh, differing opinions. The scores aren't the most important thing, anyway.

Have you given Eternal Champions: Challenge From The Dark Side a fair chance? It's improved over the Genesis version, and you might really enjoy it were you to spend some time with it and check out a move list.
EDIT:
Here is the complete quote, which you took out of context in your post, from the article.
"The Saturn was a 2D monster and seemed to have all the bells and whistles to make the final installment of Eternal Champions the best in the series, and possibly the best 2D fighting game ever made."
The game being described here was never made. You might want to read the article again.

Um, yeah, I spent a lot of time with it.
The game just isn't that great ... the move list may be impressive, but it's not very satisfying when executing them, nor do the combos work as well as they do in countless other games.
While the animation is pretty good ... the characters and character design are lame. There's just nothing there that hasn't been done better in other fighting games.
Again, it's not a terrible game ... but it's clearly not "the best 2D fighter ever made." I mean, come on! It's not even close. Horowitz just got a little too excited.

Why didn't you follow Drixxel's suggestion and read the article, or just the quote alone, before answering? Again you are wrong, and Ken never says the Sega CD version is "the best 2D fighter ever made".

In my opinion, Horowitz is letting the Sega CD fanboy part of him get the better of his reviews.
Here, let's highlight the main point of all of this.
In my opinion
No offense, but this is not the first time that someone has disagreed with someone else's reviews. If you dislike Ken's scores, I'd suggest submitting some of your own Sega CD reviews to 'balance him out', so to speak. :D

To reinforce what Drixxel said, Ken is saying that the Saturn port had the potential to be:
1) The best Eternal Champions installment.
2) The best 2D fighting game ever made.
He wasn't referring to the Sega CD version of the Challenge From the Dark Side.

thats true thats what he sead,BTW im chewed out with my eternal champions cd it doesnt intrest me that much, altought the combos are nice but theres is no damn training mode if im right i cant find it anywhere, man the game is hard enough to complete and made the nonsence of creating 256 colors in screen plain bullshit it slighly imrpoves over its genesis version only the characters look a bit more colored the backgrounds are bit the same or exactly the same except a few.I dont refer this even as such a good game it plays so difficult.

NEWS FLASH!!!
This just in: It has been discovered that there are people with different opinions than those of Hopper76's. The world is predicted to crumble into chaos. Film at 11.
I disagree with the scores of a few of those games as well, but I don't get my panties in a wad over it.
None of these game should have been rated higher than a 6 ... maybe Popful Mail, which was pretty good, but definitely not a 9.

See, you just listed three opinions in a row, some of which people are bound to disagree with. Everyone has their own views, and you can't expect everyone to agree with you. Personally, I don't agree with your scores, so does that make you crazy? :)
And welcome to the boards!
I think someone's a little too excited over my review scores that he has to start a thread for each one he disagrees with. It's ok to have differences, but these features all have their respective threads. Please bump those instead of starting new ones.
And for the record, at no time did I ever call it "the best 2D fighter ever made." I said it was thr deepest fighter ever made at the time, and it was in reference to the original, not the Sega CD version. ;)
Edit: Found the quote you mentioned. Dude, this is in reference to the third game that was never released.
The Saturn was a 2D monster and seemed to have all the bells and whistles to make the final installment of Eternal Champions the best in the series, and possibly the best 2D fighting game ever made.
I'm open to constructive criticism, by all means, but please read the article in question first.

He said it might be -- not necessarly the greatest game ever, and opinions DO vary. I love a LOT of games that people hate, and hate a lot of games that people love.
Small world. :)
