View Full Version : Estimate on this Saturn shopping list...

Okay, you diehard collectors. If you could give me a rough estimate on how much this all will cost me, I'd be much beholdin' to ya. (Especially if you could estimate the obviously pricey ones separately, like Guardian Heroes and Burning Rangers.) I don't need 'ow, that game is no good' so much as 'this is what it's going to do to your wallet'. I would like them in good condition, complete, so please take that into account. Although I guess I will ask - what do you think of this shopping list? Anything I'm missing/insane to include?

I'd try and tackle that... but I have real life matters that are more important right now. Sorry. :(

"JAP Daytona USA CCE Netlink" does not exist. "Netlink" was only used in the US. In Japan, it was called Seganet. Daytona USA CCE was called Daytona USA Circuit Edition in Japan, and I'm not sure if it supported Seganet or not, but there definitely wasn't a separate Seganet edition.

If your mistake was just that you meant the US release of Daytona USA CCE Netlink, um, good luck getting that. If you meant the Japanese release of Circuit Edition, I'm not sure how much that goes for.

Another game that does not exist is US Street Racer Extra. It was released in Japan, and in Europe (minus the 'extra' in the title), but not the US.

You will need more than $100 to get all that. Perhaps much more.

Yeah, thanks for the corrections, J-Factor. I changed some things on my Excel spreadsheet and forgot to change all the cells.

Gee, that's a revelation. :p

Daytona USA: Circuit Edition is a further-upgraded version of Daytona USA: Championship Circuit Edition, and was only released in Japan. It's compatible with Seganet via the XBAND modem by default; the Western CCE had two versions - CCE and Daytona USA: CCE Netlink Edition. CCE: Netlink Edition was a mail-order title only, so it's incredibly hard to come by.

Daytona USA: Circuit Edition isn't that rare within Japan - finding a copy for sale is another matter, though. One or two tend to crop up on eBay at a time.

Yeah, I play Daytona USA too much :/

I rented the US Daytona CCE (non-Netlink version) and I own the Japanese version. What upgrades did the Japanese version receive? I can't really notice any. And did these upgrades make it into the 2nd US version?

David J.
09-04-2006, 07:13 PM
I think the Japanese version had better handling cars, better graphics and more options.

I think those upgrades made it in to the second US version, but it is pretty fucking rare. I still have yet to see a scan of it.

The Japanese version adds in the original soundtrack (on top of the new soundtrack), lets you race at different times of day, and improves the handling. I think those are the only three differences. I certainly don't remember a graphics improvement when I played it, but that was back in 1997, so my memory may be slightly hazy.

Daytona USA: CE adds in the original compressed chiptune/sampled vocals arcade soundtrack on top of the CCE soundtrack - not the Saturn port soundtrack, which is more redbook-sounding. You can map these to any course, as you could in CCE - it also adds the Daytona USA Medley, which is a fruity medley of all three original course themes.

Its handling is somewhere between CCE and the original Saturn port (which had identical handling to the arcade game, save from the lack of analogue brakes/accelerator). You can easily drift the Hornet round the Mount Sonic turn simply by braking and turning, but it's far more controlled than in the original - you can tap the side of the turn while drifting and simply lose speed and your direction, whereas in the original port you would crash & somersault.

You can also race in the morning, which makes everything incredibly bright, in the evening (sunset), and at night (pitch dark). In addition to the default mid-afternoon, of course.

Ary: There is no Japanese text in the game, it's all English. The manual and CD case are in Japanese, obviously.

edit: The Daytona USA 2001 banner in my signature leads to the Wikipedia page for the series. I've added a ton of stuff to it over the past week as my IP address and Internetsupergenius, so you'd better appreciate it >=)

So the 'best' Saturn version of Daytona is Daytona USA: Circuit Edition? (Japanese version.)

@David: Yeah, I'm planning on taking the Saturn on as my lifelong collecting goal.

Joe Redifer

That's a hell of a hard question to estimate an answer to. The only thing I can really say is that you're gonna need a lot of $$$.

Genesis Knight
09-05-2006, 09:05 PM
I know it's impossible to tack down exactly, so let me rephrase:

1) Under $1,000?
2) 1,000+?
3) $2,000-$5,000?
4) $5,000+?

US currency.

David J.
09-05-2006, 09:13 PM
Under a thousand dollars, but do not expect to get everything all at once.

Your insane to have the Saturn version of Sim City 2000. The pc version is far better and runs on current and older PC's. Japan House of the Dead is far more common and it does work with the US Stunners, so if you want to save some $$$

Any other comments about the game selection? I'm shooting for an 'ultimate collection', minus Panzer Dragoon Saga, Radiant Silvergun, and all the pricey (non-Action) RPGs, since I very much dislike them.

And like I said, David, I'm wanting to take on the Saturn as a long-term collecting hobby to the exclusion of other systems. (Including Genesis - I'm pretty much satisfied with my collection there.) Think of this as preliminary research for a grand campaign that will take me into my thirties. :p

Any other comments about the game selection?

Good list for the most part...

The following games suck:

US Alien Trilogy
US Area 51
JAP Capcom Generation 2 (doesn't SUCK, but is highly unnecessary)
JAP Capcom Generation 4 (ditto, especially considering the prices of these)
US Contra: Legacy of War
US Crusader: No Remorse (supposedly. this is one of the few I haven't played)
US Die Hard Trilogy
US Manx TT Superbike (not terrible, but pretty lame)
US Myst (fuck Myst.)
EU Riven: The Sequel to Myst (see above)
US Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo (great game, but not the best version)

Also, get US Galactic Attack instead of JAP Layer Section. This is one of the few cases that the US version is more common and uber cheap.

The following games are fun and should be on your list:

US Blazing Dragons (humorous adventure game)
US Clockwork Knight and Clockwork Knight 2
US D
US Decathlete (Track & Field / Summer Games in 3D)
EU Deep Fear
JAP Detana Twinbee Yahho-! Deluxe Pack (a two-pack of Fantasy Zone esque shooters)
JAP Digital Dance Mix (not exactly a "good game", but it's interesting enough)
JAP DJ Wars (complex music game, if you like that sort of thing)
JAP Elevator Action Returns
US Enemy Zero
US Grid Runner
US Horde, The
JAP Jung Rhythm (blatant Parappa clone, but a good one)
EU KEIO Flying Squadron 2
US Last Bronx (one of the best 3D fighters ever IMO)
US Lunacy
US Mass Destruction
US NBA Jam T.E. (possibly the best version in existence)
US Norse by Norsewest (the incredible sequel to The Lost Vikings)
US Skeleton Warriors
US Slam n' Jam '96 (in the same vein as NBA Jam, but different)
US Solar Eclipse
JAP Stellar Assault SS (sequel to Shadow Squadron)
JAP Strikers 1945
JAP Super Tempo (extremely different from the original)
US Tempest 2000 (a superb classic)
US Three Dirty Dwarves (how could you leave this out?)
US Tunnel B1 (not as good as Nanotek Warrior, but still fun)
US Winter Heat (Winter Games in 3D)
US Worldwide Soccer '97 (I actually prefer it to '98)
US X-Men: Children of the Atom

There are lots more I could recommend, but you can just get back to me when you get through these. :p

Be sure to get whichever Capcom Generation has Ghouls N Ghosts on it. That's the only one you need.

Why the Saturn versions on Myst and Riven? The pc versions are FAR better and common. Same with Sim City 2000 and Sonic 3D Blast, which is even on the Genesis and FAR better there.

Do you really have an old 486 or something?

IBM compatible PCs have no collectible value, I had to garbage alot of my Dos games because I couldn't find a buyer as the system has always been plagued with bootlegs and with no fanbase for the platform few would care if you have a boxed copy of Sim City 2000 as they would just say "so, I downloaded that game years ago"

I find it better to collect for platforms with an actual fanbase thus for Sim City 2000 I would say getting it for Amiga, Mac or Acorn Archimedes on the computing side instead of for Dos or Windows. As Sim City 2000 for Saturn, it is not that bad as atleast one would have an easier time selling it then the Dos version.

Because I'm a die-hard Myst fan. But they're not very high on my list.

Thanks for the recommendations, J-Factor.

Isn"t Stellar Assault really expensive? Like more expensive than Radiant Silvergun?

I'm not looking at the collection aspect for those games. The playablity AND price for those games.

If you want Doom that badly.... just go to walmart, buy the ultimate doom collection or get the WAD files from the internet or something. Tons better on the PC and the Japanese version, although a LOT better can catch $40+
