Well one of two things will happen:

#1 - You turn it on and it explodes. Unfortunately this is a very violent explosion and will not only kill you, but it will destroy your entire house and most likely your neighbors as well. Ever seen the movie "FACE-OFF"? You know that scene with Nicolas Cage hanging around without his face? That's what everyone in your area will look like after the explosion.

#2 - You turn it on and everything works fine. If this is the case you can continue to use it and everything will be perfectly fine forever... just ask the millions... errr... hundreds of other 32X owners out there. FYI I do not have the plates on mine, as they are only for RF interference and do basically nothing.

OMG DAMN YOU!!!!!!
Since you told me you didn’t have it, I tried it and scenario number 1 happened!!!! I CANT FIND MY FACE NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

/sarcasm. If it weren’t for the metal plates on the actual 32x (on the bottom) I wouldn’t have thought they did anything. Thanks for the response though, if I still had my lips id kiss you.

I've always wondered the same thing. Thanks for making this thread, so I didn't have to. I'm too lazy for that.

I recall when my Genesis and 32X first acted up... I thought it was because I didn't use the plates, but it turns out everything was dirty, and those damn plates scratched my system up. piece of shit.

In one way, I have the same experience that most others have had with their RF shielding plates. Meaning, it doesn't matter whether they're on or not for me. That said, I never scratched up my unit by using them, which makes me brilliant, I guess.

The cartridge slot clips for the 32X are there to comply with some kind of legislation about RF signals interfering with other equipment. It's why your Mega Drive has a metal shield inside it, for example, and why the Mega-CD came with those bulky plates (although those serve as an extra anchor point, so I guess they serve a real purpose after all).

Some toothpaste cleaned it up for me, so that makes ME brilliant. :p

You both should really skip college. Present that information to any prospective employer and they will see that you have the smarts for any job, even CEO.

Yeah, it's also why they made the TurboGrafx-16 bigger in the US compared to the tiny PC Engine. Damn the FCC!

I just gave it a shot a little while ago.. While I don't have the plates, I connected a wire to the metal part on the 32X, to the RF shield on the Genesis, and I was shocked, with my setup, I did get a different result (audio wise)...

On my model 1, the test proved useless, no change..

On my model 2 however, there WAS a difference.. Without it, going into the sound test in Knuckles Chaotix, yielded me some electrical noise on the speakers (from the picture that is, interference... When I connected a wire to the tabs on the 32X to the RF shield on the Genesis, the noise went VERY minimal, to almost not even there..

It seems those things DO have some use after all, at least on the model II, in my case..

That is interesting. Do you have 32X After Burner by chance? That game has a very high pitched noise whenever it is powered up. Other 32X games do the same thing, but After Burner is by far the worst. Does it make any difference with this game?

I picked up a pair of these plates from a seller on ebay (US) for US $2.60.

His ebay id is nes4less.

Im sure he had a few more of these plates lying around.

I didn't need the shielding plates on my Model 2 Genesis when I had it out.

i still need mine.. i'd prefer it..

my SEGA setup is actually possibly causing interference on my HDTV just on TV channels..

Surely not on the HD channels since they are digital.

the connection between my cable box and my TV.. Component cables, not digital there...

that's where the interference is coming in, because the ground those cables use, are also on the same ground connection in the TV, where the SEGA plugs into...

I can tell you that the Model 2 systems are... intresting to say the least. Some of them have various problems. Crappy sound, loose AC Adaptors, and now some models require the damn shielding plates.

I was lucky with the Model 2 system I got, but in the end, I put my Model 2 Genesis and Model 1 Sega CD in storage.

the model 2, to me, isn't a finished design.. and being they cheaped and used quite a few all-in-one chips, screw it, it's crap...

i love my model 1.. I use my Sega CD2 and Genesis 1, as my CD player..

I'm considering just getting a hunk of Bacofoil and mushing it between my Model 2s so the shapes fit. I'm getting paranoid about the small slips and shifts when I insert or remove controllers :p

do what i do, take 2 index cards, fold them in half, and mash them between the genesis and the 32x..
