OK like, here's da story so far yo:

My friend buys Silpheed at a crusty used game store for $3.99 (complete). He takes it home. He has a Genesis 1 and a CDX. He tried the game on his CDX and the intro plays and everything seems to be working fine. He presses START because he figures it might be nice to play the game. The game starts to load level 1 and gets up to the part where STAGE_1 is flashing on the screen. But then it just freezes there, each and every time. He cannot play the game.

He had the game resurfaced at the world famous Game Stop or someplace like that. Everyone loves Game Stop. I mean, how can you not? They're Game Stop for cryin' out loud! Wow. Just wow. Anyway this did not help his dillema as the game still would freeze up. So he brings the game over and we try it in my awesome Genesis 1/Sega CD1 (both launch day units). As expected the game works perfectly without any flaws. I offered to buy the game from him for more than he paid for it, but he wants to buy a Sega CD 2 JUST FOR THIS GAME. I think he should sell it to me instead, and surely you all agree.

Anyway, my question is this: Are there any known issues with Silpheed and the CDX?

It shouldn't have ANY problems at all.

I think some Sega CD's are picky with some games. In the Joe Montana Sega CD thread, some one posted that their copy of the game didn't work in one of his systems, but it was fine in another and it was the only game that give him problems.

It isn't a rare game, just toss the disc, keep the box and manual, and buy a loose copy on ebay or something. I doubt his laser is having problems, so you can throw that idea out of the window.

Screw that. The disc works great on my super Sega CD. If he throws it away I will set his house on fire. Or maybe just be sad. One of the two, whichever requires the least amount of effort from me because I am lazy.

Also, that person in that other thread should be thankful that Joe Montana CD did not work. Any Sega CD that won't work with that game should be worth $500.

I just went to double check, and Silpheed works flawlessly in my CDX. It welcomed me to the next level with open arms.

I am that poor sap that Joe is talking about. My Sega CDX works just fine with all my 11 other CD games but Silpheed is being a complete ass and teases me by going only so far.
Once it gets to the STAGE_01 and loads the in game HUD it stops loading. The display on the CDX has a constant ACCESS lit up and the disc spins very slowly. I am baffled but I won't give up yet. If all else fails maybe Joe will win a complete game from Ebay and we can swap discs.

PS. I had the disc resurfaced at Game Force. A HUGE difference between Game Force and Game Stop. Game Force(boulder) is BY FAR the best game store in Colorado.

Have you tried clean the lazer(pinky to mouth) lense?

He cleaned it with a professional CD lens cleaner called "The Eliminator". That just screams professionalism. It didn't help. I don't think he's tried putting his pinky to his mouth, though I'm not sure what in the world that could possibly accomplish.

I'd think the his CDX has some lens issue since the game spools from the disc due to the FMV backgrounds. I'd imagine if his lens is a bit shaky, it may be good enough to load segments into RAM, even if it takes longer and multiple attempts, than it would be at playing FMV titles. Do any other FMV or similar games run on it with problems?

Why don't you buy a new loose copy and try that one? Then sell one of the two to Joe, because he wanted the game.

If I remember correctly, Joe would sooner sacrifice his children for a new Mario game before purchasing a loose, uncomplete copy of any game. :p

Hahahahahaha! Then he can take the complete game and his pal the loose one. :D

LOL Benjamin is right! I'd sacrifice my kids for ANY reason since I really, really, really do not want children.

It always ran fine for me, but I did buy my CDX brand new. However, I never had any problems with either the crusty old rental from the one game rental store in my hometown or the brand new(?) copy I bought from EB when I moved to the big city.

So maybe it's his CDX...
