Ken Kutaragi also mentioned PlayStation 3 will be able to download and playback classic 16-bit Mega Drive (Genesis) and PC-Engine (Turbografx) titles, it is also possible to play a small fee to play certain time-limited game demos.

:daze: Sony wants a piece of Nintendo glory I guess?

This whole generation is going to be a battle of Sony and Nintendo copying each other back and forth.

Maybe an exaggeration, but this one is certainly going to be an interesting match.

What's the point? It's all free if you can use Google anyway. A standard Xbox is more than capable of doing what these next gen consoles are bragging about for the total download price of jack shit per game.

The same could be said of the DC w/o even needing to be softmodded like an Xbox. Mainstream gamers are only now realizing what those in the emu scene have been enjoying for years. The difference is they'll be paying for those roms. If I'm paying for a game it's gonna be a physical copy, unless there're some massive enhancements added to the end product.

I love paying fees for demos. That rocks! Free demos are stupid because I keep my money, and I hate having money!

Word. Pay for demos? Screw that. XBL gives 'em to me for free, so why should pay Sony?

SEGA have supposedly responded by saying they have had NO talks with Sony over being able to download classic SEGA games at all. Perhaps Sony were a bit hopeful and wanted to ask SEGa later...I don't know, it's still weird.

Didn't Dreamcast have a short-lived service in Japan that let you download Mega Drive and PC Engine games for it?

That's what I've been hearing. Pretty interesting concept since the VMU acts as the program to save and upload this feature.

Yeah, but this is legal, and benefits the company you're buying the game from. SEGA don't get squat if you get Sonic 1 (W) [!].bin from a warez emporium and Fusion.exe from Eidolon's Inn - but they get moolah if you buy the licensed ROM legally.

Virtual Console (and everything else like it) is exactly the same as purchasing a game from a shop. Only it's 10 years old, and you download it (I presume). You pay money, someone supplies the game, why are you whining about having to pay for the game?

To look at it another way, if Dreamcast emulation was practical and widespread, would you have a problem paying to run its games on the Wii? Sure, you can run games illegally on an emulator, but it doesn't mean you should expect to get it for free as a result.
