View Full Version : semi-working sega cd

my father bought me a semi-working Sega CD unit on eBay.. the seller says the unit plays music CD's, and CD-G just fine, but sometimes it won't load a Sega CD game..
since there's no copy protection, i thought that maybe the lens is dirty for game data, but for CD data, it's fine.. OR, the SRAM battery may be dead?
i haven't got it yet, but any advice as to what the problem may be, is welcome..
(it's a model II)

also, while i know how to burn a Sega CD game that has the ISO/WAVE combo (from previous backups to games I no longer have), how do I burn one that don't have WAVEs?
SegaCueMaker just complains I am missing WAVEs, when there was non to begin with (my Sega CD game had no audio tracks----mega race)

Just burn the ISO. Screw Sega Cue Maker.

will it work on the real hardware though? if i remember correctly, it does something different to the way it burns the ISO..

Should work fine. Just burn it as an ISO with Nero.

right now the only PC that can burn in the house, is my fathers, and it's getting it's HD cloned (SMART status failed on it)
my comp is a Mac, and I use Toast 7 Titanium, can that burn an ok to use ISO? (i could never burn Dreamcast games on Toast, for some reason, they never worked, and always ended up using Nero on my fathers PC)
Joe Redifer

Yes, just set Toast to DATA and ISO 9660, drag and drop the ISO file into Toast's window and select BURN. It might be helpful if you put a blank CD-R in the tray sometime during this process.

ok, got it burned.. hopefully when the Sega CD arrives, it will play it (after I repair the unit)

If it doesn't work, you will have wasted maybe 10 cents on that blank CD!

i get them bulk ;)
the emulator reads it as a regular SegaCD game, though, i think that'll read anything..

Bah! It'll work. I've illegally and immorally burned Sega CD games even without the included WAV files as just ISO only (like Silpheed) and it worked fine on the real hardware... at least until the FBI busted in and ruined my shit.

but cant you put the Wave files in a map or something and then burn the complete deal?.That works for emulator on pc eh,just iso+music files in amap and ittl work fine,in that situation forget burning or what ever.
Joe Redifer

A map? Maps are, well maps. You use them to find stuff and what routes to take, etc. Maps don't hold WAV files.

i think he means CUE files, as maps.. as CUEs are pretty much telling the burner where to burn things..
i noticed Toast don't burn CDs with CUE files.. It wants a BIN file also, which i do not have..

I don't think Mega Race had any WAV files to begin with, did it? It may have had one that said "This CD isn't a music CD!" when played in a real CD player, but the game certainly does not depend on that being there.

no, it didn't, hence why i just burned the ISO like you said...
the music is all done on either the YM2612, or through the SegaCDs PCM channel via the data on the CD... (which oddly MegaRace is only ONE file on the CD, a big 500mb dat file..)

If you have a Genesis 1 you can find out by hooking the headphone jack from the Genesis into the Sega CD's mixing jack. Any sound that goes away is Genesis sound... what remains is all generated by the sheer power of the Sega CD!

speaking of which, i have no clue how to hook up my Genesis 1 to the CD... (which is a model TWO CD)
my model 1 was modified with a 9-pin mini DIN, and it's audio left and right was grabbed from the headphone ports solder points...

Then you won't be able to use the Sega CD's mixing jack, and the volume control will lower all Genesis and Sega CD volume simultaneously (keep it at max at all times). Just hook the Genesis up to the Sega CD 2 like normal but DON'T plug anything into the mixing jack (I hope it comes with the Genesis 1 extender plate), plug in the power for the Sega CD 2 and hook the A/V connections up normally like you would for the Genesis alone.

i don't think it's coming with the Genesis 1 extender plate...
what does it do, and is it required?
If it's required, I do have a model II genesis just incase..

You don't need the extender plate... but it looks like ass without it.

ok, well im gonna use my model II genesis then..
(only thing i hate about the model II genesis, is when the 32X is in it, it feels fragile, you can hear the Genesis creaking)

The extender plate attaches to the Sega CD to make it wider, otherwise the Sega CD2 doesn't reach all the way to the left side of the Genesis. It is cosmetic only.

actually i mean this, you download the roms from a site and you’ll get these files. If you put the Iso+music files in a map it’ll work fine and complete on gens with music etc etc etc,it works great. the only thing is there are not many sites who give mega cd files this way and the download size is over 100mb so it can cost some time, thats the way i do it, just put the music files inclusive iso in a map and run it trough gens(+bios sega cd files.)

The files are? wave or mp3 files right?.
Just load the map and youre rom doesnt have to be burned and have to cost you 10 ct when only playing on pc.Tell me youre way how do you do it then Joe?.

the CD-ROM is getting the ISO burned to it, along with the WAVEs as audio tracks (the CUE file is telling the burner exactly HOW to burn it...)
the problem I was running into, is the program that makes the CUE files didn't like making a CUE file to a CD that didn't have WAVE files.. though, I didn't realize that if there was no WAVEs to begin with, there's no need at all to even make a CUE file...

The Sega CD arrived today... here's the stats..
Sonic CD (Burned via PC and Nero with CUE and WAVEs): Works, the Sega CD booted it
MegaRace (Burned via Mac with no WAVE, just ISO): Works, the Sega CD booted it, ALL sounds are there
HOWEVER: It took about 7 tries to get it to even boot the CD, it didn't want to start the game, and it DID have NO problem with Music CDs.. Sooooo, the ebay seller WAS right.. But it is indeed an ODD problem.. But atleast it runs...
EDIT: It won't read a CD-R anymore.. LED just blinks 4 times..
Need calibrating probably. Or the laser is just dying.

oh GOD, I am kinda happy the SegaCD won't run, so I don't accidentally put that CD-R back in it by accident..

well, it appears my neighbor is an ex-sega employe.. he checked out my sega CD with is "SEGA CD Diagnostic Disc" (geez, that CD must be RARE!!), and it came up with a failing CD laser stepper motor.. when he smacked the side of the Sega CD, that changed to PASS...

Oh man, that is awsome, you should tell him to sell some stuff, he probably has it all!

he didn't want to sell any of the stuff.... he says it will come in handy (just like me needing to use it), and he has like everything sega, his Sega Genesis is loaded with everything, even the karaoke machine, all models of Sega CD, and all models of Genesis, each equipped with a 32X..
Too bad he wouldn't even sell me the working Sega CD unit.. (he says I can use them, but not keep them..)
he said he will "try" and get in touch with other ex-sega employees and find the stepper motor that mine needs.. OR, just a whole new unit...

For some reason I imagined something vaguely similar to the scene from Anchorman where Ron assembles the news team by blowing into a conch shell, except this time it'd be a guy in a Sonic shirt toting a box of Sega CD parts. With a conch shell.
...what? That isn't weird, is it?
Anyhow, it's way rad you have an ex-Sega employee for a neighbor. See if he can float you one of those 'replacement' CDX's we now know they're hiding. ;)

great neighbour i have to say
i've recently bought a multi mega and it has exactly the same problem
reads audio cd's originals and cdr's without any problems, but to play a game in cdr i have to try several times, don't have an original games yet so i don't know if it reads properly original games.
what do you guys recommend? should i ask for a refund? (the seller has already tell me that i could send it back)

When laser is a bit dead, it tend to only read audio CDR (because data correction is enough)... but on CDR data track, it fails...
You should try an original disc first.
Then if original is ok, check another CDR brand... Or another burner... Some brands sux.
Good luck.
